Good timing for this thread. A couple days ago was the 12th anniversary of my cousin dying at 21 of prolonged tachycardia caused by mono. About a week before he died, House MD had aired its fourth season finale, in which a major character dies of something very similar, and it's syrupy and schlocky and sentimental and they play this fucking Iron and Wine song at the end - "Passing Afternoon" I think it's called. So it all got tied up together in my head and I remember lying awake the night I got the news with that fucking song playing over and over again in my brain. Some years I make myself watch that stupid-ass episode and listen to that goddamn Iron and Wine song as, like, some kind of ritual remembrance thing. This is one of those years.

We sang "Let it Be" at his funeral, and the store where I worked at the time had "Casimir Pulaski Day" on a mix they would play constantly, and I still can't stand to hear either of those songs.

It could be argued that all of these are just bad songs that nobody should listen to anyway.

I work in commercial radio. We have the radio on all day every day with the same roster of maybe 15-20 songs being played. It has ruined so many songs I previously liked, I can barely count, including ‘Together In Electric Dreams’ and ‘Give It Up’

there was a ferry disaster in the uk in the late 80s and a charity cover version of Let It Be was released, it was a very poor choice of song when there were accusations of a cover-up going on at the same time

I have a monthly show on local radio and have had a look at their playlist for when a senior royal dies, think you could probably guess what's on it.

Yeah, never the best choice of lyrics for a tragedy. Always makes me think of that Paul Simon line, "I know they said let it be, it just don't work out that way."

I was coming up on ecstacy in a cab about 15 years ago when Daniel by Elton John came on the radio,my friend sang along to it and knew all the words. He explained that him and his brother used to sing it to their mother after their infant brother Daniel died. I find the song too sad to enjoy now

”Casimir Pulaski Day”

I only know the Big Black song by this name, which gives your story a slightly different feeling in my mind...

I listened to Radiohead’s “Pyramid Song” with a friend who was dying of brain cancer, and he died the next day, but I still listen to that song to bring him to mind and if I cry, of course I should cry.

A few years back I heard 'Little April Showers', which I had definitely not heard since I was very little and it induced some sort of miniature emotional meltdown, no idea why but I'm not going back there, as beautiful as the song is.

Spent a day on a coke binge while my girlfriend travelled to Amsterdam to see Future Islands, I would join her later. I was not able to attend and left her seeing the band, luckily she met a friend there though. But she refuses to listen to Future Islands for one second ever again. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I'm clean 2 years now though. And we're still together.

seems like a perfect song to play at my eventual wedding and blubber uncontrollably

After my brother died, I spent close to a week playing "Sometimes It Snows In April" repeatedly and sobbing. It's been 32 years and I still can't even think about that song without tearing up, let alone listen to it.

I thought to myself, well if it's not Brian Emo then it has to be the movie one and I'm not one to tell people what and what not to listen to, but...
