'amatcha' does read kinda annoying

this is my take

this is a good blog post that directly addresses the points that have been made as to why gucci mane is a great rap lyricist

what up cuz? what up tupp? what up gangsta? (J0rdan S.), Monday, 29 June 2009 10:22 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah well he doesn't say "amateur" because it doesn't rhyme with "stamina"

what up cuz? what up tupp? what up gangsta? (J0rdan S.), Monday, 29 June 2009 10:23 (fourteen years ago) link

u should notice that he didnt even link to a post of mine -- im defending u here!!

zzz (deej), Monday, 29 June 2009 10:24 (fourteen years ago) link

what is there even to say about the post though? the guy is just taking criticisms of gangster rap that have been around since i was like 2 years old and projecting them onto gucci with the example being some track that i've never even heard of. there's no point to even respond to

what up cuz? what up tupp? what up gangsta? (J0rdan S.), Monday, 29 June 2009 10:26 (fourteen years ago) link

i dunno it seems to be getting a lot of attention on its own.

zzz (deej), Monday, 29 June 2009 10:28 (fourteen years ago) link

and if someone is gonna imply that im a racist for saying that gucci is a good lyricist with an unusual vocabulary or whatever it is then im just gonna go "lol internet" because what else is there to say

what up cuz? what up tupp? what up gangsta? (J0rdan S.), Monday, 29 June 2009 10:29 (fourteen years ago) link

i dunno something abt it really bothers me. maybe its just annoying that its so stupid

zzz (deej), Monday, 29 June 2009 10:30 (fourteen years ago) link

its giving me 'stuff white people like' extremely imprecise satire vibes

zzz (deej), Monday, 29 June 2009 10:31 (fourteen years ago) link

it's getting attention because people who aren't feeling gucci can rally around this piece of writing that doesn't address the music because it's much easier to do that than to articulate why he's not a good rapper and even easier than to admit that the guy is a good rapper. i would have the same response if people on blogs started rallying around ethan's joke review of 'like father, like son' - this gucci post is as much of a joke

what up cuz? what up tupp? what up gangsta? (J0rdan S.), Monday, 29 June 2009 10:31 (fourteen years ago) link

plus dude cmon i was getting bored w/ defending mj from the internet

zzz (deej), Monday, 29 June 2009 10:32 (fourteen years ago) link

alright

^^this is from the guy who wrote the "hysterical satirical piece" on lil wayne/zac efron - i think this basically proves my point as to who this is catering to and why it isn't worthy of a response

what up cuz? what up tupp? what up gangsta? (J0rdan S.), Monday, 29 June 2009 10:34 (fourteen years ago) link

real glad i ended up not posting anything abt that aside from in its comments section

I'm sorry didn't you pop shots on your blog at Gordon and proceed to promptly delete your post when you realized you looked childish and foolish? Have the courage to, at least, stand by what you believe in. Grow some balls, son.

well not exactly

what up cuz? what up tupp? what up gangsta? (J0rdan S.), Monday, 29 June 2009 10:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i already responded to that & basically put forth my philosophy of ignoring morons who still dont get it. they have to 'approve' the comments

should have followed that in the first place but talking w noz abt the philaflava thread where i guess everyone is cosigning this post had my *rolling my damn eyes* again

zzz (deej), Monday, 29 June 2009 10:39 (fourteen years ago) link

yes i know this is more than i should have bothered with

zzz (deej), Monday, 29 June 2009 10:40 (fourteen years ago) link

responding to gucci bashers is not something that shouldn't be done it's just that it people who hate him are unwilling to engage with his music so there are no real arguments to respond to - the only one i can think of was jayson greene in that coke blunts comment section but what he was saying was like... wildly off base even objectively

what up cuz? what up tupp? what up gangsta? (J0rdan S.), Monday, 29 June 2009 10:47 (fourteen years ago) link

even this guy doczeus in the comments of this spends 200 words talking about regional biases

um nah heres real talk:

gucci is gangster rap. Some ppl like to pretend gangster shit is 'over' as if the streets are passe. they also like to accuse folks taking street shit seriously of overwriting.

in the initial arguments for gucci's relevance i dont see much hyperbole or whatever. (i dont understand a word of what brandon says, but im not sure hes using 'hyperbole' like is being parodied here per se).

basically here is how i break it down to an extent: gucci is a great rapper. no academia needed to back that up. hes super lyrical & raps about standard gangster rap topics. if u dont get it, u are probably a softbatch blogger who at best is just parodying people for not being very good writers / very good at expressing appreciation. you still dont have interesting opinions of your own & mos def's record isnt better than gucci's just because gucci has a song called 'booty shorts'

ok so which ilxor is this? is it you deej under an assumed name?

what up cuz? what up tupp? what up gangsta? (J0rdan S.), Monday, 29 June 2009 10:51 (fourteen years ago) link

i hope you realize that GM wouldn't even warrant the ire of all these reactionary Bill Cosby-ass rap blogs if you guys hadn't zealously oversold the whole "gucci is such a lyricist in the classic sense" angle

some dude, Monday, 29 June 2009 13:39 (fourteen years ago) link

also sarge when you call people who don't like your favorite rapper "bashers" you come off pretty butthurt even if that's obviously what you're trying not to do

he is a great lyricist some dude. & i dont think we were zealously overselling anything -- keeping in mind u were sleeping when we wrote that shit too

zzz (deej), Monday, 29 June 2009 15:07 (fourteen years ago) link

this is exactly whats annoying me abt this 'debate' -- its totally changing the terms on which ppl are discussing his music.

zzz (deej), Monday, 29 June 2009 15:08 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm just saying, you guys really set the terms of discourse that allowed these cornballs to turn GM into their platform for boring-ass discussions of racism and trying to read a rapper's "intelligence" based on their songs

some dude, Monday, 29 June 2009 15:25 (fourteen years ago) link

i think that stream of discussion has happened every time a new rapper surfaces ...? I think after the clipse/jeezy pitchfork thing dudes were just waiting for the next street rapper who has a 'stupid' persona to be taken seriously so they could pull this, i mean theyve been saying the same damn things about noz ever since he took soulja boy seriously so

zzz (deej), Monday, 29 June 2009 15:57 (fourteen years ago) link

im not really sure what we could have done to avoid this

zzz (deej), Monday, 29 June 2009 15:57 (fourteen years ago) link

im happy that we've set the discourse as gucci as a classical lyricist because he is. and i agree with deej that gucci is just being held up as "generic southern rapper x" for people who want to bash gangster rap be it for the misogyny or the drug talk or the fact that the guy doesn't rap like nas or whatever it is. as i've said, i have read very few reasonable criticisms of gucci's music and even more to the point very view criticisms directly to things that i and david write. even in noz's comments section, which basically turns into a gucci discussion whenever he posts a song, there seem to be a lot of people who are like "i wasn't fucking with dude but he's great yeah!"

im just trying to use a catchall term - "bashers" or "detractors" or "people who don't like gucci mane" or whatever it is

what up cuz? what up tupp? what up gangsta? (J0rdan S.), Monday, 29 June 2009 17:20 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i dunno -- basically i think noz's super sarcastic post ("He’s way smarter than anybody who was ever on Rawkus (except for maybe Big L because he was a drug dealer)") was the way to go with this shit. the problem is these cornballs were writing epic tracts about Lil Wayne well after LW was too big for their ridiculous theories to have any effect, but since GM's record sales haven't caught up with his popularity yet all these hacks are trying to be gatekeepers, like 'blog buzz' can stop a career from growing the same way it can put guys on the XXL cover.

still crazy after all deeznuts (some dude), Monday, 29 June 2009 17:32 (fourteen years ago) link
