“lol triggered” but make it socialist: the podcast

White people stay getting paid to blithely joke about the struggles, misery, and death of oppressed people. And folks who are supposedly progressives or leftists support it.

It's no wonder shit is very fucking bad.

— William C. (@williamcson) March 21, 2018

you know what, it's terrible when (just about) anyone dies but these people are not little helpless kids. They are capable of making decisions in the face of all reason and have insisted on making selfish ones that impact the rest of us. Fuck them for enabling their leaders and protracting this nightmare for the rest of us.

gonna start skipping amber episodes by default tnh. thankfully they're rare these days.

anyway this was the best thing any of them were involved with this week

but I know US leftists basically see foreign lives as memes or props or thought experiments so what do I expect really

I will not stand for this calumny against (checks notes) Chapo Trap House.

(I think I made my point clearly, now to etc etc coffee and read that thread buy @williamcson)

Holy SHIT the Taibbi episode is fucking foul

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 17 July 2020 13:42 (three years ago) link

The more distance I gain from them the more I start to agree with a lot of the criticisms. At the same time I wish there was a more nuanced way to approach than “I listened to part of one episode, they are bad and white supremacist the end.”

I feel like that kind of summary dismissal is ultimately counterproductive since you will find areas of uh problematicness among many segments of the left who are largely on the right side of things.

you don't say

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 17 July 2020 14:58 (three years ago) link

i don’t know why they need such charitable close reading (that they never give to anything outside their experience), give them one if you like but it’s fine when people who get the gist of where they’re coming from decline to do so. this is just the purity criticism they hate so much but applied to their critics

the US/European left is pretty terrible & largely on the right side doesn’t mean shit if you’re not part of the largely, which is already an overstatement

people have tried for years to give nuanced constructive criticism to this crowd & been met with threats & harassment so this doesn’t come from nowhere

At the same time I wish there was a more nuanced way to approach than “I listened to part of one episode, they are bad and white supremacist the end.”

to be clear I listened to the whole episode and have listened to a ton of Chapo episodes in full.

three white people sitting around dismissing prison and police abolitionists as "unserious" and "Twitter radicals" ignoring that many many many grassroots POC organizations have been leading this stuff post Floyd was beyond tone deaf

also like I know Amber grew up in Justified or whatever but I hate her "well people in my family have been in jail" thing as if she knows and has insight into the entire experience of people in the country, esp POC, with law enforcements

these edgy bernie bros have the exact same take on (not just) this issue as the professional class liberals they hate so much, what are they even for?

xp i think that comment was referring to the twitter thread where someone listens to 10 minutes of an episode and dismisses the show based on a tasteless joke.

I haven't listened to the Taibbi episode, it sounded insufferable from the description.

That's plenty enough reason to dismiss something. Life is short; there's always something you could be doing/watching/reading/listening to instead of the thing you're currently doing/watching/reading/listening to. Any reason to jump out is valid, and these people give the audience plenty of reasons. Enough, in fact, that it's more a statement about the people who don't than the ones who do.

always came across as deeply informed, humane and committed, just super kind and passionate in a way that a lot of these sneering twitter hacks never approached, he was in a different league. i saw him becoming a kind of amy goodman for folks my age, just a dependably steadfast left voice with no schtick or gimmick. RIP michael

I mean really there are very, very few journalists/pundits/whatever there are in his league. the Amy Goodman of our generation is OTM budo. Such a fucking loss for the world and fuck, I'm a big fan of his show and whenever he's on MR! This really fucking blows, and his absence will be felt for a long time, the void he leaves is just gigantic.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 21 July 2020 01:52 (three years ago) link

and I mean fuck, what was he, 34? he was just coming into his own. Horrible, horrible, horrible, in every way.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 21 July 2020 01:53 (three years ago) link

yeah this really fuckin sucks. that is just brutally young.

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 02:15 (three years ago) link

he was 37, sorry

Totally fuckin I don't know what. I despair for the fucking American media honestly

flappy bird, Tuesday, 21 July 2020 04:17 (three years ago) link

Echoing what everyone else says above, was watching him just yesterday. One of the voices that became a reliable presence over time, and was really just beginning to come into his own

MR is back today but I honestly don't know when/if I will be able to listen again. Heartbreaking

flappy bird, Monday, 27 July 2020 17:15 (three years ago) link

I think there's going to be a tribute episode of The Michael Brooks Show tomorrow. They are apparently going to keep going with that show, though I don't know in what form.

Muswell Hillbilly Elegy (President Keyes), Monday, 27 July 2020 17:31 (three years ago) link

Sam & Griscom mentioned how most of the branding was already TMBS, I guess they'll just do the KFC thing

flappy bird, Monday, 27 July 2020 18:59 (three years ago) link

god the show is so much more listenable when a) they just shit talk random current events in relatively rapid fire and b) amber is busy writing her bad new book

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 02:58 (three years ago) link

yeah if they were just a lefter version of Stern commenting on the news i'd be fine with it

yup. it's a good thing to have and they're at least half bad at the other things

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 04:16 (three years ago) link

really the Street Fight guys should do it but they never really polish their act

the quar on drugs (Simon H.), Tuesday, 28 July 2020 04:24 (three years ago) link

The longform reading series episodes are their peak but they never even finished Ben Shapiro's novel IIRC

the most recent premium true anon, going big picture on COVID and how comprehensively fucked the USA is, is really strong stuff. I'm guessing it'll get unlocked.
