some people just bring out dark bad things in one another ... I think Branwell is often a really thoughtful, brilliant, articulate poster ... and the amount of bullying and ganging up that they have received here (compared to other posters) over the years really bothers me. ... not to dismiss your response, Brad, just that from my read of the thread, it seems like two quality posters triggering one another and taking each other to shitty places.

This is utopian, of course, but I do wish we could acknowledge that it's utterly, absolutely, completely impossible to be 100% in agreement with everyone on ILX and that good faith readings are preferable to the obverse even when it's personally hurtful. Fwiw I have been genuinely unsettled by things that specific posters have said in the past but I certainly do everything within my power to look at the issue from their perspective, even when I happen to vehemently disagree, and I still respect and appreciate their continued presence (unless outright bullying is involved). I think ILX needs more rather than fewer posters, entropy be damned.

A quick check of 'My Recent Posts' suggests I'm not getting or putting anything valuable out of this - there's weirdly a lot going on outside of ILX at the minute, and I'm both shitposting and resenting the new answer page. I should definitely take a break. (and I'll cop that I'm doing so in a loud annoying way to help it stick)

is a new low for you

This is absolutely me being an asshole by the way, I've not encountered a single bad opinion from Brad that I can remember.

Brad should not leave (or should come back if they do go chill)

Most posters with interesting perspectives generate conversation by talking about things they're interested in. Sometimes this doesn't work, because there's nobody else standing in the room at the time who wants to talk about that thing; this is not a conspiracy, it just means that people are doing other things elsewhere.

If a poster regularly takes months away from ILX then reappears in order to complain that people aren't talking about the thing that they want to talk about, in the style that they want to talk about, and that they are being excluded because of this -- over and over again -- then the strategy of just talking about it might be a more productive option.

If each of their posts typically contain the following quantity of personal pronouns within two or three posts of returning, then other people in the room can be forgiven for inferring that the poster mainly would like the talk to be about themself.

(One can understand that such a poster's conscious intention is to genuinely defend theirselves, while also understanding why many would infer otherwise.)

I walked in... I was referencing... not exposed to the suspicion and accusations that I am... the problem is ~my~ attitude... But the problem is ~my~ attitude.

If I even mention... I am screamed at, told [...] that I'm not welcome... let's be clear who has been excluded here - it has not been Brad. It has been me. If I mention... I get screamed at ...

... twisted to mean I am somehow ...

But the problem is ~my~ attitude?

The problem here is not my attitude.

...It's uncomfortable for me to be here... But having me here also makes things uncomfortable for you (pl.) because my presence ... you project your discomfort onto me. It's *MY* fault, my ... the problems I have here...

To name a problem is to become the problem.

only a few months ago, in my "DO NOT POST IN THIS THREAD" thread, Mordy and deems had a 1-2 joke about death of the author and "is that a threat?". this poster was involved in a similar misunderstanding years ago in their beef with Mordy, but the "death of an author/is that a threat" joke had been occurring on ILX prior to that incident in question.

out of nowhere, this same poster showed up in thread and accused us of all being assholes and saying we are constantly mocking that incident from a few years ago, when nobody was alluding to them at all.

Particularly when they’ve decided to suggest that putting up with bullshit from terfs is necessary and valuable.

Things that have happened to me, a cis woman, when talking to* terfs:

- been accused of being a ‘handmaiden’, a gender traitor, a cunt, a misogynist
- been accused of wanting to sew myself up (!)
- been accused of not being a real woman,
- been accused of wanting children to be exposed to abusers

... and I find that awful enough for me, so why suggest any trans person does it? They have been radicalised. They are beyond reason.

*talking to, not screaming at, for a person who likes to talk about misogyny on ilx you’re not shy of using a few tropes yourself, huh?

Particularly when they’ve decided to suggest that putting up with bullshit from terfs is necessary and valuable.

whoa whoa whoa that is so not what Branwell was saying at all. but it's a super fraught issue that different people have different comfort levels dealing with ... like "how to navigate discussions of white supremacy with people who are sympathetic but are also kinda racist" ... for some people that is too triggering and painful and just a "no go" area. For others, who have the capacity to do that work, it's an important discussion. Then it's like ... okay, is that thread a place for both positions, or should it be somewhere where people don't even bring up the work because it is too triggering for those who don't want to go there.

One could argue for summary execution of all racists, terfs, cops and landlords, etc. including all those with somewhat sympathetic views to the racists, terfs, cops and landlords. Former ilxor nakhchivan might support this solution as he is a fan of executions. I kinda doubt that many of the rest of you actually want to execute all these people. I feel like you want them to be empathetic, respectful, and not treat marginalized people like garbage. So, the issue is ... how does this get accomplished? Maybe if silby demonstrated a greater interest in historical executions, I might feel like they were less of a smug shit-stirrer.

If there were no meaningful difference at all between the way that "people who were assigned male" are treated, and the way that "people who were assigned female" are treated, then no one would ever need to transition socially in any form, ever, in this world, because it just literally wouldn't make any difference.

Like, you are so far down the spiral of denying the fabric of trans people's actual lived experience I don't even know what level of transphobia you are on?

It's also frankly AMAZING, how there is literally ~no difference at all~ between a gay bathhouse, and a "queer poetry night - anyone who has ever felt any connection to the word 'woman' welcome" at the Feminist Library. These spaces are completely identical, and their functions utterly indistinguishable, and it's totally transphobia city to imply any difference!!!!!

I mean... it's almost as if people are responding to massive over-generalisations with... other massive over-generalisations, to make a point about the absurd reductivity of the first reaction?
