Simply put: this is a shared space run by people other than myself, so I'm going to avoid putting those other people in a position where they may be liable for something inflammatory that I've written. Again, if you're creative, you can say what you want to say without actually saying the thing ('please pass away peacefully in your sleep this evening' is, for instance, a workable alternative in this particular instance, I find).

Are you sure about that OL?

Young Boys of Bernie (Tom D.), Monday, 10 August 2020 16:31 (three years ago) link

I've read plenty of inflammatory stuff from you in the past!

Young Boys of Bernie (Tom D.), Monday, 10 August 2020 16:32 (three years ago) link

I'll slip on the mea culpa hairshirt if you're aware of specific instances, Tom, but I always post from the mindset described above and am consequently careful of my wording however inflamed I may be in a moment. Also I'm just a paranoid weenie who doesn't want to wind up on a watchlist, generally speaking.

Why does this relates to Yoda? (Old Lunch), Monday, 10 August 2020 16:39 (three years ago) link

I hate to say it but the only reason I mentioned the wood chipper thing at all - wood chippers are not common in the UK - is because I remember reading someone on ILX talking about Trump being fed into a wood chipper and I remember thinking, "That's a bit strong". I think it was before violent fantasies about Trump became so commonplace on ILX so I was a bit taken aback by it and, on searching for the quote in question... well, can you guess who posted it?

Young Boys of Bernie (Tom D.), Monday, 10 August 2020 16:42 (three years ago) link

I have to say that I had never before seen an ILX post in which someone has said 'I would stab X public figure with a knife'. As mentioned before I don't believe it was a genuine death threat, I have no animosity towards Calz as a poster at all, I think he was just ranting as he usually does and went over a line. It wasn't a death threat but it could have been taken as one by someone not familiar with the ins and outs of these boards and as a result it obviously couldn't stay where it was.

It was on the thread in question for three or four minutes max and I'm not sure anyone else here read it because the other examples being given here just aren't comparing like for like.

Matt DC, Monday, 10 August 2020 16:43 (three years ago) link

surely the uncommon nature of the wood chipper is part of what makes it ridiculous

it's a spicy dinner we're having (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 10 August 2020 16:54 (three years ago) link

xxpost Although I shan't defend the tone of the post in question, I'd argue that there's a distinction between gruesome fantasia and statements of intent. Still, a little time in the hairshirt would probably do me some good.

Why does this relates to Yoda? (Old Lunch), Monday, 10 August 2020 16:57 (three years ago) link

I don't know what the weather's like there but it's far too hot for hairshirts here.

Young Boys of Bernie (Tom D.), Monday, 10 August 2020 16:59 (three years ago) link

what if the FBI cross-reference your DN with known owners of wood chippers?

The Scampos of Young Werther (Noodle Vague), Monday, 10 August 2020 17:01 (three years ago) link

I'm fairly certain I've never actually seen a woodchipper in person, and only slightly less certain that I'd wind up accidentally feeding myself into one if I ever made the mistake of trying to operate one. Some might call that poetic justice.

Why does this relates to Yoda? (Old Lunch), Monday, 10 August 2020 17:03 (three years ago) link

i know a couple guys with woodchippers

(and nw, anyone reading this has connections to multiple people with woodchippers. the nexus to criminal elements is established!)

The GOAT Harold Land (Karl Malone), Monday, 10 August 2020 17:05 (three years ago) link

they'd probably do a logical 'and' on this list: gruesome fantasia & owner of wood chipper & has not seen Fargo & has not participated in banter with anyone who has seen Fargo & FPs below 50

it's a spicy dinner we're having (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 10 August 2020 17:06 (three years ago) link

(only a criminal mind is savvy enough to keep the FPs below 50. i didn't fuck that up.)

it's a spicy dinner we're having (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 10 August 2020 17:08 (three years ago) link

In the US, at least, "wishing" a public figure was dead is protected speech. There's case law behind this, where if it's worded like "God, I wish he'd stroke out and die already", it's understood that this isn't a threat. Whereas "Would be a shame if someone shot you, <name>" could be considered a threat even if it's worded in the hypothetical.

saying "I would stab X public figure with a knife" would be likely to get you a visit from the FBI here, on the other hand. Obviously, I don't know how it works in the UK, but for the snark regarding the difference between the two upthread, there is actually a very big difference between the two statements, legally speaking, in the US.

popeye's arse (Neanderthal), Monday, 10 August 2020 17:10 (three years ago) link

neither is an enjoyable post to read tbh

it's a spicy dinner we're having (Sufjan Grafton), Monday, 10 August 2020 17:14 (three years ago) link

for instance, a draft dodger once infamously said "They always holler at us to get an education. And now I have already received my draft classification as 1-A and I have got to report for my physical this Monday coming. I am not going. If they ever make me carry a rifle the first man I want to get in my sights is L. B. J.". He was arrested, but the Supreme Court upheld that this was political hyperbole, not an actual threat.

Whereas the mailing of letters by one gentleman, containing the words "kill Reagan" and depicting the president's bleeding head impaled on a stake, was considered a serious threat.

so US-centric posters have that in the back of their minds when reading things like that.

right right, "stopping people from saying anything," that's what's at stake here. always cool how whenever anyone talks about trying to move the community standards of this board beyond "what was acceptable to internet hardmen in 2005," this seemingly intelligent and critical-thinky group suddenly turns into 14-year-olds who just discovered the joys of not-actually-relevant libertarian free-speech discourse on 4chan.

I'm honestly surprised at some of the people defending this behaviour, and obviously there are personal relationships behind the scenes that I'm unaware, but it strikes me as pretty hypocritical coming from some of you.

"So Calz was gulag'd because a mod for some reason felt an example needed to be set, and chose to build the gulag out of completely random and dime a dozen calz-banter posts. Stern stuff." - LBI otm.

This is such execrable moderation and the goalposts have been moved around so much within this thread it's hard to take the moderators seriously or in good faith. Calz says he's received no explanation or email and there is clearly no consensus on why he has been banned. emil.y says there have been 'repeated death threats', Matt disagrees and says "he was just ranting as he usually does and went over a line. It wasn't a death threat but it could have been taken as one by someone not familiar with the ins and outs of these boards" (which apparently includes some of the people moderating it). Perhaps it's that posting a photo of a mural with a woman's breasts either sides of Corbz's bonce that has been posted several times before and received p widespread coverage in the mnstrm media now counts as "gross sexual imagery"? The man himself suspected that at least one moderator has been bearing a grudge for a long time. It's hard not to think there is political animus behind this when this banning is such a pure example of weathervane centrist posturing to reinforce polite and sensible manners. No one thinks calzino is comparable to Thomas Mair (not really an 'acceptable' thing to imply about another poster either really but anyway) so bringing up the murder of Jo Cox is an absurd bit of moral panic and lends weight to the thought that his banning is an act of empty gesture politics and optics disingenuously employed to make an example out of a political opponent in a manner worthy of Sir Keir Rodney Starmer KCB QC MP. The alleged silent meltjority of ilx has been unwilling or unable to contest calzino's politics but you occasionally hear grumbling about tankies or people tutting at the mention of gulags, and yet here we see calzino banished to the naughty step without consensus, coherent explanation or show trial. As long as an unrepresentative and unelected group of south-east chattering class enforcers can convince themselves that their opponents are unreasonable and "really not ok" in whatever climate they feel they might be living in, who are we to object when they make an example out of them?
