Although I never want to see a return to the ILX that required them, I really miss the days of the UK Watercooler threads, where people had a space to talk to each other, explain what was going on in their heads and their lives, talk stuff out, without this weird back-channel subtweety 'I'm saying this but I'm not saying it' in front of an audience of rubberneckers looking for drama. :(

I'd say it was always required, yes.
Was that the "This is the thread where I say" threads? I never frequented them, but.

Time to get your "Don't Blame Me, I Voted for Sanders" merchandise designs ready. Personally, I'd test the waters with bumper stickers and coffee mugs first, then when the market gets rolling, maybe branch into t-shirts and baby clothes. Comic sans would be OK for the baby clothes, but otherwise, I'd stick to something in sans serif.

i don't have fully formed thoughts on this and didn't want to troll the economics thread but it is a big question of ~~what is ethics under capitalism~~. similar questions with philanthropy, personal "carbon footprints," consumer politics, etc. tbh i hate these conversations on the internet *flounces off*

you should all invest in my ethical technology company. i've invented a recipe for "bread". you add the pulp from your bananas to this bread. you bake the bread (you can do this using existing bread baking technology). when it's done, you find out how many spider legs were in those bananas -- thank god you didn't eat them! now throw the bread technology away along with any remaining spider leg filled bananas.

It depends on how you define "investing" -- mostly it's used along the lines of what ulysses s forks is saying, or you could just invest in stuff like federal and municipal bonds, which don't pay as good a rate of return, but in theory, you are supporting low income home ownership, agriculture, and infrastructure improvements . In a way, ethical investing is what led to the dismantling of apartheid fwiw. There are definitely structural issues if one wanted to be more ethical than just the investment equivalent of voting for Biden -- at least from what this thread, er the other thread, uh ilx, has made me think is that the majority of people have their savings in tax-deferred accounts, which tend to restrict what the money in them can be invested in.
There are a lot of "blended" business models at this point, in that they are entities focused on doing projects (building affordable housing, other anti-poverty and social justice type work) that do pay investors a decent rate of return rather than joining the nonprofit-industrial complex and spend countless thankless hours applying for grants and donations from rich white people (mostly). Many of these entities aren't things you can invest in through a tax-deferred account (401k, 403b, IRA, etc) -- so in a way that is an access to capital issue in and of itself.

Yeah on the radio there was a lead-in to a story about Soul City that got me thinking a little differently about this. i was just speaking my tin foil hat bullshit about a system that is built on exploiting “inefficiencies”... the whole damn enterprise seems based on deception, so cherry-picking funds etc.. Idk.. obviously we all want to invest ethically. I know this isn’t galaxy brain shit, I’m not on Twitter etc.
