seems like a good way to lose money tbh

muntjac wagner (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 19 August 2020 19:38 (three years ago) link

it's choosing not to actively invest in explicitly problematic and horrible companies and focusing on the less horrible and explicitly problematic companies... not sure what's wrong with that?

i don't have fully formed thoughts on this and didn't want to troll the economics thread but it is a big question of ~~what is ethics under capitalism~~. similar questions with philanthropy, personal "carbon footprints," consumer politics, etc. tbh i hate these conversations on the internet *flounces off*

i don't wanna invest in guns or petroleum under any circumstances, that seems like a good place to start

tombot I didn’t want to infect that serious thread with my undereducated dribble but I guess I underestimated myself

your opinion is valid. you mean something. i hear you. i see you.

contorted filbert (harbl), Wednesday, 19 August 2020 20:04 (three years ago) link

you should all invest in my ethical technology company. i've invented a recipe for "bread". you add the pulp from your bananas to this bread. you bake the bread (you can do this using existing bread baking technology). when it's done, you find out how many spider legs were in those bananas -- thank god you didn't eat them! now throw the bread technology away along with any remaining spider leg filled bananas.

I don’t really get the idea of ethical investing, it doesn’t seem compatible with the reality in which I assume we all live

― brimstead, Wednesday, August 19, 2020 12:23 PM (forty-nine minutes ago)

It depends on how you define "investing" -- mostly it's used along the lines of what ulysses s forks is saying, or you could just invest in stuff like federal and municipal bonds, which don't pay as good a rate of return, but in theory, you are supporting low income home ownership, agriculture, and infrastructure improvements . In a way, ethical investing is what led to the dismantling of apartheid fwiw. There are definitely structural issues if one wanted to be more ethical than just the investment equivalent of voting for Biden -- at least from what this thread, er the other thread, uh ilx, has made me think is that the majority of people have their savings in tax-deferred accounts, which tend to restrict what the money in them can be invested in.

There are a lot of "blended" business models at this point, in that they are entities focused on doing projects (building affordable housing, other anti-poverty and social justice type work) that do pay investors a decent rate of return rather than joining the nonprofit-industrial complex and spend countless thankless hours applying for grants and donations from rich white people (mostly). Many of these entities aren't things you can invest in through a tax-deferred account (401k, 403b, IRA, etc) -- so in a way that is an access to capital issue in and of itself.

sorry Kate, I didn't know you asked for it. I'm fine with it

Dan S, Wednesday, 19 August 2020 22:04 (three years ago) link

is no problem, i'm glad most people don't need to think about the things i need to think about :)

Kate (rushomancy), Wednesday, 19 August 2020 22:07 (three years ago) link

Yeah on the radio there was a lead-in to a story about Soul City that got me thinking a little differently about this. i was just speaking my tin foil hat bullshit about a system that is built on exploiting “inefficiencies”... the whole damn enterprise seems based on deception, so cherry-picking funds etc.. Idk.. obviously we all want to invest ethically. I know this isn’t galaxy brain shit, I’m not on Twitter etc.

I think I'd rather listen to glen greenwald's music!

calzino, Wednesday, 26 August 2020 11:02 (three years ago) link

just because this variety of music annoys you, it doesn't mean you are actively obliged to rage about how it is shit and all sounds the same, if you did this for any other genre of music you would be rightfully called out for trolling or at least subjected to weary sighing, but uk indie music for various reasons is exempt from this rule

a double standard I can understand is still a double standard. I'm not into this music but reading this thread makes me want to get very into it just to piss people off, not going to do that but I am not pleased to be tempted

Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 29 August 2020 08:32 (three years ago) link

It’s OK Andrew, for some people it’s just never not a good time to take cheap potshots at the most popular movies in the history of the world. It makes them feel smart.

The poster (redacted) doesn't actually exist outside his head; it's a straw femininst / anti-racist / ~trans activist~ / whatever who he blames for why things aren't still the way they were back when he liked it in the 70s.

I think Lao Tsu concisely summarised Aimless's ponderous and verbose post 20+ centuries ago, without feeling the need to get in an unsubtle ad hominem (ad feminem) attack:
