disconcerting ft disparity in this game

eh i watched a bunch of it, not sure on the lakers side but 4/5 of portland's starters wanted nothing to do with the free throw line
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 23 August 2020 03:27 (three years ago) link
The Blazers played essentially a 7 player rotation, including two rookies. The Lakers played a 9 player rotation; ten, if you count J.R. Smith, who got 9 minutes in this game!

Watched a lot of the magic/bucks series and although Fultz is definitely a decent NBA player now I really don’t think he can ever be a good starter. He’s just not explosive enough to be that bad at shooting. He maybe has the best up and under layup in the league tho
― Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 23 August 2020 15:54 (three years ago) link
thinking abt phillys org... celtics got philly to trade up to one because they knew they wanted fultz then a couple years later the celtics took thybulle four spots ahead of where philly was picking and immediately flipped him for their pick and another, howd the celtics know these things
― lag∞n, Sunday, 23 August 2020 16:03 (three years ago) link
celtics haven't drafted well enough to give them credit for being prescient imo. maybe they're good at telling which players are bad but not which are good
― ciderpress, Sunday, 23 August 2020 16:59 (three years ago) link
outside of brown/tatum obv but those were top 3 picks
― ciderpress, Sunday, 23 August 2020 17:00 (three years ago) link
im saying they knew who philly liked prob because someone told them

Mike Malone is probably gonna do something crazy today, job is at stake and team seems to have quit on him
― Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 23 August 2020 17:10 (three years ago) link
well at least with the fultz/tatum trade the story in the press was that philly approached boston about trading up...i'm guessing boston asked who they liked as part of that conversation.
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 23 August 2020 17:52 (three years ago) link
harris gifting the celtics 3 points in an elimination game because he’s mad about a no-call...not a great look
― k3vin k., Sunday, 23 August 2020 18:08 (three years ago) link
it was close when i turned it on but i think that injury to tobi just broke the sixers
― call all destroyer, Sunday, 23 August 2020 19:04 (three years ago) link
The Fultz thing was a black swan event that it’s hard to blame on the sixers
― Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 23 August 2020 19:14 (three years ago) link
i find it hard to believe that the sixers don’t accept much of the blame with that pick
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 23 August 2020 19:35 (three years ago) link
it was just bad scouting... they clearly didn’t know what they were getting into with the player who they traded up to number 1 to select. they are a poorly run organization... the entire thing was a circus from day 1
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 23 August 2020 19:37 (three years ago) link
a black swan no 1 pick to which i don’t apportion much of the blame to the team when you look at the draft in context is anthony bennett
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 23 August 2020 19:39 (three years ago) link
Fultz looked GREAT and if he had a normal jumpshot he’d be a nice starter by now. I mean I wasn’t sold on him but the draft gurus sure were. Some weird things happened with Bennett too, I think it’s a similar deal. But it doesn’t get much weirder than a. guy forgetting how to shoot.
― Matt Armstrong, Sunday, 23 August 2020 19:42 (three years ago) link
There was probably stuff in Bennett’s personal life, he showed up out of shape. The jumper came back in the g league so it was probably a work ethic/off court issues thing

i think it's been documented since then that work ethic was bennett's biggest problem from the day he got in the building

Bennett was a wtf pick right from the beginning. He was gonna be a lottery pick no matter what but if he had been drafted at his projected spot of somewhere 5-10, he'd be just a regular bust. That is totally on the Cavs

Fultz on the other hand does feel more impossible to predict. While I don't doubt that some kind of psychological vulnerability correlates among pro athletes who get the yips, it doesn't seem like one that teams are able to detect with enough confidence to factor in to their, uh, process. However, it definitely leaves a poor impression of the Sixers org when you consider the context of the Celtics being fine to trade down (despite the pundits hailing Fultz as a strong #1 who was a clear tier above everyone else), the Sixers being confident enough to trade up, and what has ultimately happened with Tatum. That's before even considering the possibility that Fultz wouldn't have forgotten how to shoot in an organization that was better able to meet his player development needs
― Lavator Shemmelpennick, Sunday, 23 August 2020 20:02 (three years ago) link
Doris and Mark Jones were really rubbing some grade-A salt in the Sixers' wounds at the end there, pointing out how Butler is looking in Miami, what a great fit Redick was when he was there to compensate for the awkward Embiid/Simmons fit, etc. Just in general they've made one bad decision after another of late, with the overzealous signing of Horford at the top of the pile. "If we snap up the Embiid stopper, then Embiid will be unstoppable!" Didn't work out that way, huh Elton Brand
― Lavator Shemmelpennick, Sunday, 23 August 2020 20:07 (three years ago) link
ideally sixers should give up on embiid and build the simmons + shooters team but easier said than done
― ciderpress, Sunday, 23 August 2020 20:13 (three years ago) link
I think that's where I am at now, though really trade whichever one you think will get you the most and build around the other.
― trunk's full of pearl and lonestar (PBKR), Sunday, 23 August 2020 20:17 (three years ago) link
i just think what we've seen from embiid is his max whereas simmons could be better on the right team
― ciderpress, Sunday, 23 August 2020 20:24 (three years ago) link
Yeah I think Embiid would look better on a loaded team where he didn’t have to be the #1 option and his conditioning therefore wouldn’t be such an issue, but he’d still be the same player. Simmons, though, feels like one of the hardest players in the league to predict where his game is going in the next 5 years, assuming he’s able to work in an environment, be it Philly or elsewhere, that can think creatively about how to maximize his talents.
― Lavator Shemmelpennick, Sunday, 23 August 2020 20:31 (three years ago) link
joel def didnt help his trade value with this series tho im sure theres still plenty teams who think they could get through to him, blockbusters are always tough to put together tho gotta find a team that can give u a lot and still have enough left to make it worthwhile
― lag∞n, Sunday, 23 August 2020 20:32 (three years ago) link
clippers cld put something together for simmons mb
― lag∞n, Sunday, 23 August 2020 20:35 (three years ago) link
Tough to find a fit for him too. Washington would probably do it for Beal? That would not end well for Washington.

bennett was a bizarre pick from the jump no doubt but there were no right answers in that draft. oladipo would be the clear no 1 in a re-draft now but seeing as he didn’t pop until his third team i’m not sure you could say the cavs missed out on a lot. the sixers stared at one bust and one perennial all NBA and mvp candidate and made the wrong pick.
