There's a distinctive structure on the right behind the ramp, looks like a stadium maybe.

neith moon (ledge), Thursday, 27 August 2020 08:35 (three years ago) link

The dutch priority road ends sign has a striped not solid bar.

neith moon (ledge), Thursday, 27 August 2020 08:41 (three years ago) link

Lisbon? The bus station is right next to the Sporting Lisbon stadium and it kinda looks like the roof of that just in pic on the right?

or something, Thursday, 27 August 2020 08:53 (three years ago) link

xp Good one - I didn't even notice that sign hiding at the back there.

Tim, Thursday, 27 August 2020 08:58 (three years ago) link

The apartments don't feel right for Lisbon, but I'm getting football stadium roof vibes too

cherry blossom, Thursday, 27 August 2020 09:04 (three years ago) link

Either a stadium or some kind of bridge.

The red bus sign brackets say central / Eastern Europe to me but idk.

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Thursday, 27 August 2020 09:12 (three years ago) link

me neither, I was yelling ENHANCE at my computer screen but to no avail

assert (MatthewK), Thursday, 27 August 2020 09:18 (three years ago) link

Have just gone down a rabbit hole looking at street sign typefaces of European countries and that 11 looks pretty Germanic to me or maybe middle European

Zelda Zonk, Thursday, 27 August 2020 10:20 (three years ago) link

Because of the yellow diamond road sign and the design of the apartment blocks, I'm hazarding a guess at the Netherlands, perhaps Rotterdam?

Netherlands DEBUNKED by ledge in road sign sleuth drama

cherry blossom, Thursday, 27 August 2020 10:36 (three years ago) link

Haha, those yellow diamonds are everywhere too by the looks of things.

Maresn3st, Thursday, 27 August 2020 10:42 (three years ago) link

I was thinking Prague but I can't find exactly where it would be.

Joey Corona (Euler), Thursday, 27 August 2020 10:53 (three years ago) link

Welp, if it's not France then my next guess is Lisbon, only because the paving stones look like an approximation of that city's typical masonry patterns. But idk otherwise, it does look like a glimpse of a Euro megafootball stadium there ya

my god, it's full of bugles (flamboyant goon tie included), Thursday, 27 August 2020 12:00 (three years ago) link

I dunno, I find it hard to imagine those noticeboards with tattered "take one" strips at the bottom in the bus stops attached to stadium, or what look like pasted-up photocopied flyers/ posters for events - they have more of the feel of a university or hospital or something.

Tim, Thursday, 27 August 2020 12:19 (three years ago) link

the streetlights

cherry blossom, Thursday, 27 August 2020 12:36 (three years ago) link

they match prague pretty well though i doubt they're unique to there.

neith moon (ledge), Thursday, 27 August 2020 12:45 (three years ago) link

The call is coming from inside the streelights

cherry blossom, Thursday, 27 August 2020 12:46 (three years ago) link

Czech Republic fails the "Ledge Test", as it's become known, by having a striped not solid bar on its priority road ends sign.

Tim, Thursday, 27 August 2020 12:59 (three years ago) link

Well done Euler, it's Prague. Černý Most Metro Station to be precise.

Anti-Cop Ponceortium (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 27 August 2020 13:00 (three years ago) link

Apparently the "Ledge Test" is flawed

Anti-Cop Ponceortium (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 27 August 2020 13:00 (three years ago) link

Here are my other photos from Prague 03/04, there is another view of the station immediately after this one, wonder if it would"ve been easier or harder.

Anti-Cop Ponceortium (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Thursday, 27 August 2020 13:05 (three years ago) link

The "football stadium" is actually the perspex cover of the raised metro line

lovely scans, CaAL!

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 27 August 2020 13:18 (three years ago) link

here's a sign with a striped bar, maybe they were changed after 2003-4?

should this issue arise again with contemporary photographs, here's the definitive resource:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_European_road_signs#Table_of_traffic_signs_comparison

neith moon (ledge), Thursday, 27 August 2020 13:22 (three years ago) link

That page is the rabbit hole I've been down for a chunk of today. Comparing the morphology of figure 1s was a particular high point.

Tim, Thursday, 27 August 2020 13:24 (three years ago) link

I've seen some pretty intense guides that serious geoguessr players have written up regarding road signs, road markings, bollard types, crash barrier styles, distance markers etc etc etc that could be very useful too, but sadly don't have any links saved.

Sunday ambience

Whitley Bay?

A Short Film About Scampoes (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 30 August 2020 09:25 (three years ago) link

Its not Whitley Bay! Too early to be giving any more hints other than what can be determined in the picture itself though!

cherry blossom, Monday, 31 August 2020 08:27 (three years ago) link

I have picked up nothing worth having, past being fairly certain this is in the UK somewhere (I mean, if you told me it was Ireland I wouldn't be utterly amazed) (I suppose this goes for all the little islands as well but you know what I mean). Doesn't look rocky enough for Cornwall. I'd expect more red stone if it was Devon. It might be the power of NV's suggestion but somewhere on the east coast seems a fair guess.

I can't even work out what that tower is supposed to be: a windmill that's had a chimney built on to it?

Tim, Monday, 31 August 2020 10:55 (three years ago) link

I'm not convinced this is a city

Zelda Zonk, Monday, 31 August 2020 11:20 (three years ago) link

Hmm, this is correct - it isn't a city. I may have made this one too difficult

cherry blossom, Monday, 31 August 2020 11:26 (three years ago) link

the sea does look very east coast to me but i am gonna peruse the picture some more

A Short Film About Scampoes (Noodle Vague), Monday, 31 August 2020 11:26 (three years ago) link

i'd swear it's UK or Ireland and the bungalows look more UK to me

A Short Film About Scampoes (Noodle Vague), Monday, 31 August 2020 11:29 (three years ago) link

church seems to have a buttress on it so reasonably old, i feel like the round tower with the conical roof must be the big clue but i've no idea what it is

Ayr

29 facepalms, Monday, 31 August 2020 11:54 (three years ago) link

road markings surely confirm it's uk or Ireland. I would say this feels like the south west somewhere.

Anti-Cop Ponceortium (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 31 August 2020 11:55 (three years ago) link

The key is that circular building

Zelda Zonk, Monday, 31 August 2020 12:09 (three years ago) link

Tim's suggestion that it's an old windmill seems plausible. It's looks more like that than an old defensive tower to me.

Alnwick?

Neil S, Tuesday, 1 September 2020 07:06 (three years ago) link

Trying to make out the station sign on the far left but it's no easy task. The last few letters could be CIA or CLE, something like that.

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Tuesday, 1 September 2020 07:56 (three years ago) link

I can assure you the CIA are not connected on this particular operation

Seascale in Cumbria?

or something, Tuesday, 1 September 2020 09:37 (three years ago) link

Can't be that many small UK towns with rail lines running along the coast. I mean, too many for me to be bothered to check them all out, but still...

Zelda Zonk, Tuesday, 1 September 2020 09:56 (three years ago) link

it makes me think of all those little towns on that line along the south coast between hove and portsmouth, landscape and buildings look wrong though. this does not look like a resort.

Anti-Cop Ponceortium (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 1 September 2020 10:06 (three years ago) link

the east coast main line hugs the coast north of newcastle and up beyond dundee.

neith moon (ledge), Tuesday, 1 September 2020 10:11 (three years ago) link

Seascale! After looking at lots of pictures of railway stations on the Exe and Thames estuaries, many of which were could-be-nearly-maybe it's such a pleasure to be told the right answer.

Looks like the damn thing was a water tower: https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1348657 But the windows look original, which is why I had discounted that possibility, shows how much I know.
