it makes me think of all those little towns on that line along the south coast between hove and portsmouth, landscape and buildings look wrong though. this does not look like a resort.

the east coast main line hugs the coast north of newcastle and up beyond dundee.

Seascale! After looking at lots of pictures of railway stations on the Exe and Thames estuaries, many of which were could-be-nearly-maybe it's such a pleasure to be told the right answer.

Looks like the damn thing was a water tower: https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1348657 But the windows look original, which is why I had discounted that possibility, shows how much I know.

Tim, Tuesday, 1 September 2020 10:23 (three years ago) link

That was fun. Tough ones are good. or something, is it somewhere you know? How did you get it in the end?

brain (krakow), Tuesday, 1 September 2020 10:36 (three years ago) link

I used the Ordnance Survey app on my tablet and followed the coast for any likely looking train stations. Found one with a row of houses at a right angle to the station and sea and then spotted the tower. I'm from the north west of england and do have a friend who lived there for a short while tho, it's close to Sellafield power station

or something, Tuesday, 1 September 2020 10:45 (three years ago) link

Good one. I did something similar, but convinced myself the dark bank of cloud on the second photo was the opposite bank of an estuary - hilariously that meant I had a look around Morecambe Bay and drifted up as far north as Kirkby-in-Furness but then gave up. So close!

Tim, Tuesday, 1 September 2020 10:49 (three years ago) link

Bravo! ended up being as good as the Hartford one

I'd thought the rail line/station might have been spotted in the first image but it was probably just that bit too far away

cherry blossom, Tuesday, 1 September 2020 11:22 (three years ago) link

i thought the station was a bus stop in the first picture

I bet ShariVari will get this in a flash

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Friday, 4 September 2020 11:52 (three years ago) link

NV, I feel like Lubeck doesn't have that proportion of green roofs, and there are A LOT more churches along the water if my memory serves.

My mom was born in a DMZ there so there's also that.

Fair enough, I was guessing based on how I imagine it tbh

Some of those gable ends look Hanseatic to me

A Short Film About Scampoes (Noodle Vague), Friday, 4 September 2020 12:11 (three years ago) link

NV my immediate thought was Lubeck, too, so I get it.

Those green roofs made me think of Kyiv but (unless this is a weird view) Kyiv’s got to be more built up than that so... I’m way past the end of my knowledge. Somewhere post-Soviet would be my guess.

Hats off! what gave it away?

cherry blossom, Friday, 4 September 2020 13:07 (three years ago) link

ooh I was going to suggest Nizhny or Kazan just from looking at places along the Volga but seemed too big and pretty to be either

small rather!

That place looks really gorgeous wow

It sounds super-weird! A row of houses copied directly from Bruges? https://www.calvertjournal.com/articles/show/7303/yoshkar-ola-mari-el Built with the specific aim of making ILXors think it was Hanseatic, I imagine.

Just a lucky google search for 'waterfront russia' ! Fascinating place though, looks like a big lego set.

Very little to go on here - the mass of apartment towers on the right make me think of Eastern Europe I guess...

Zelda Zonk, Monday, 21 September 2020 02:10 (three years ago) link

IKEA store at a highway intersection in the mid distance narrows options considerably. Red tiled roofs suggest Mediterranean. That color scheme on the apartment towers matches some around Madrid. But having looked at five dozen options none quite matches. And I'm very worried that the nosebleed seats in that futbol stadium are a deathtrap.

Disgraced, committing sudoku (Sanpaku), Monday, 21 September 2020 14:49 (three years ago) link

nice catch re: ikea.

i was also thinking mediterranean.

rijeka ?

budo jeru, Monday, 21 September 2020 15:33 (three years ago) link

if it’s indeed rIjEKA it would make that Ikea a brilliant clue

No mean feat. DaBaby (breastcrawl), Monday, 21 September 2020 15:38 (three years ago) link

With the IKEA crib, it's now a brute-force problem: search every IKEA, see if it's the right kind of intersection, get yourself oriented relative to the intersection, and try to find either the low-rise Plattenbau up the hill, or the 1960s concrete stadium for local sports off to the left.

Far too verdant to be Madrid surely

rascal clobber (jim in vancouver), Monday, 21 September 2020 18:20 (three years ago) link

this isn't saying mediterranean to me. Western Europe for sure

rascal clobber (jim in vancouver), Monday, 21 September 2020 18:30 (three years ago) link

Yeah, it doesn't look Mediterranean to me either.

Braga it is!

cherry blossom, Monday, 21 September 2020 22:32 (three years ago) link

Hats off to the Ikea spotter, didn't even notice that! Good work all round

cherry blossom, Tuesday, 22 September 2020 07:27 (three years ago) link

Bravo!

I don't feel too bad about the Mediterranean thing as it's decidedly Northern Atlantic in the end.

brain (krakow), Tuesday, 22 September 2020 10:44 (three years ago) link

Oh, missed this one entirely, yeah, love that stadium.
