I mean, there is definitely a difference between:

a) the Victorian English Gentleman's Cape as modelled by Bela Lugosi, Hendrix, Colin Shamen, Peter Hammill

and

b) the Welsh bard / mystical wizard / Native American Medicine Man type cloak-like cape, as modelled by Yes, Will Shamen, and everyone else on this thread

Does a cape have to have a collar? Is that the difference? I don't know actually know!

the neck and colour of the crosby garment suggest to me it's referencing a european medieval tradition so i'd say that makes it some sort of mutant cape rather than a poncho. or maybe it's a sleeveless smock?

I think it's maybe just length that distinguishes cape from cloak - Wikipedia is not being very helpful.

The thing Colin Shamen wore on Top of the Pops was definitely a cape, tho.

David Crosby's thing was buckskin, and also was not split up the front. A cape can't be sewn shut, it can only be buttoned or pinned or fastened.

Stockhausen's cape is so great. Seriously, composers in capes - more of this sort of thing.

The Regal got hold of a load of ex-Police capes in the early 80s when i first started going in there.
& i think it had been a fashion item at some point in the 60s, possibly ceased to be Police uniform sometime mid 60s.

So I assume there musty be photos around with people in those.

Really want to make a caped civil war coat but have been meaning to do that for the last 5 years.
& do love those half caped Victorian coats also the handsome cab/coach coats from a while earlier.

(Sorry, I just got sucked into this hole of Shamen videos, looking for more evidence of cape-wearing, but Colin went through a whole phase of wearing pilots harnesses including personal flotation devices and Kapok life vests onstage, culminating in this thing I can literally only describe as a... well, a Techno-Sporran, and I thought I had found a full video of the Techno-Sporran, but alas, it was only a Kapok.)
