I still occasionally chuckle to myself at "Adama in a fatsuit / I know I know it's serious"

I powercycled through this show just before my daughter was born, and thought the way it reflected the psyche of post-9/11 America was fascinating, and that the show's action and plot twists were very compelling. But when I think of it now, mostly I think about how bad I thought the "All along the watchtower" scenes were, and how unsatisfying I found the resolution of Starbuck's final plotline. I could definitely stand to watch it again, though.

Just a few slices of apple, Servant. Thank you. How delicious. (stevie), Tuesday, 8 September 2020 09:02 (three years ago) link

I'm glad I watched this in the mid-2000s, but also I wouldn't want to bother watching it now even if I hadn't seen it. iyswim.

Did this show start or just massively add to the trope of someone having a gun to the bad guy's head and the bad guy saying "go on then! Just do it! Just shoot me already!"? (And then bad guy doesn't get shot).

That one's as old as the hills. Just started watching this as it wasn't the type of thing I'd bother with when it came out. Seen the 2 eps of the mini series so far and it's... ok so far. Endearingly low budget looking

or something, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 09:37 (three years ago) link

The second season and first four or five parts of the third are the high points. The fourth is mostly pure nonsense aside from one or two storylines. Things fell apart when they dug too heavily into the mystical aspects of the plot.

chap, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 10:24 (three years ago) link

Definitely. The twists at the start of the second series, iirc, are particularly powerful.

Great cliffhanger at the end of season 2 also.

chap, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 11:46 (three years ago) link

We only saw it the once, and aside from what they did with Starbuck (one of the best characters in nu-golden age TV) I recall liking most stuff about it, or at least didn't find the mythology stuff terribly ... terrible. As I remember it, though, I want to say the most impressive feat was tossing in something like episode 2 of the first season. You've barely been introduced to these people in the pilot and then they throw this super intense, super-cool more or less bottle episode at you and you're hooked for several seasons. Show is finally streamable again on Peacock, maybe I'll convince a kid or two to watch ...

"I'm not a cylon" = "I'M NOT A CAWP!!!"

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 13:24 (three years ago) link

Checking wikipedia I see it is the beginning of S03, partic Occupation, that was my favourite.

Just a few slices of apple, Servant. Thank you. How delicious. (stevie), Tuesday, 8 September 2020 13:34 (three years ago) link

Yeah mine too. They end that storyline too soon, they could've easily extended it to fill the whole season.

chap, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 14:25 (three years ago) link

did the show age well?

I remember loving it the first time I watched it. Desperation on every page.

The only other thing I remember is thinking Boomer's portrayal was absolutely atrocious, but maybe I was too emotionally calcified at the time to connect to the softness of the character.

It really doesn’t go to shit until the middle of the fourth/last season, does it?

red flags everywhere by the season 3 closer, said the joker to the thief

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 16:45 (three years ago) link

I think I posted about this years ago, but this is the transcript of a roundtable that Moore and several actors did while the show was still going - https://en.battlestarwikiclone.org/wiki/Podcast:The_Battlestar_Roundtable

About halfway through Jamie Bamber has some very thoughtful criticisms of the direction of the show and the evolution of the Cylons.

JoeStork, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 16:58 (three years ago) link

I think mid-season 3, it starts getting pretty bad and just gets worse. I loved the miniseries and first 2 seasons but have zero desire to revisit, knowing where it ends up

had to break down and make a Peacock account to re-screen

the bbc2 schedule (2 episodes every friday) seems achingly slow given all this talk. 50 odd episodes to get through, that's 1/2 a year at this rate.

(i have them all on dvd, but dvd player is currently flashing up 'BLOCKED')

koogs, Wednesday, 9 September 2020 17:16 (three years ago) link

Is it not on Netflix? It definitely used to be (or maybe Amazon Prime)

Peacock hasn't shown me a single ad yet at least.

The one positive thing about the last couple seasons is thinking how much worse it could have been if they'd picked a more loathsome song ... like substitute a popular song that you cannot stand in place of Watchtower (for me it was "In the Air Tonight" by Phil collins) ... as hokey as that plot was, it would have been so much more painful with Phil Collins.

"We Are The Robots"

(I don't really do streaming - everything comes in over 3g via the phone)

koogs, Wednesday, 9 September 2020 19:09 (three years ago) link

The choice of ultimate boomer rock makes it worse.

"Sussussudio" would have ruled.

I can't remember how brutal the airlocking of Felix was, but I let it pass at the time

Every '80s song I can think of is an improvement. Saul and Chief dancing to "Faith." The opening drum machine pattern to "Blue Monday" reverberating around the ship.

Now I want a Cop Rock-ed Galactica where they do a couple of these each episode.

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Wednesday, 9 September 2020 19:24 (three years ago) link

I was upset about what happened to Felix ... and Cassie ... I liked her and Chief as labor organizers on New Caprica!

"Sussussudio" would have ruled.

for me, it would have been torture

sarahell, Wednesday, 9 September 2020 19:33 (three years ago) link

if the song is "Last Caress", the outburst in the courtroom would get a lot weirder

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 9 September 2020 19:34 (three years ago) link

'in the air tonight' would have been more awesome/fitting/hilarious

imagine waiting like six episodes for the drums to come in, and *then* the cylons go over the top

mookieproof, Wednesday, 9 September 2020 19:49 (three years ago) link

and then Anders picks up the phone and calls Starbuck and asks if she ever truly loved him

The first episodes of the miniseries are still so good

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Thursday, 10 September 2020 06:21 (three years ago) link

If I'm honest, I probably like the miniseries more than the series. A similar argument can be made for the LOST pilot being the best the show gets. Both of them have so much promise

Can't watch BG without wondering what they do with all the corners of pages.

koogs, Saturday, 19 September 2020 14:02 (three years ago) link

Started this with my daughter, who sat down to watch under duress - an "old" sci-fi reboot of an even older sci-fi she'd never heard of is a hard sell - but she was hooked immediately. It's at least as good as I remembered. I wonder if it was pitched as "Das Boot" meets "The Day After?"

I was surprised to be reminded that the religious/theological stuff is there in the very first episode.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 25 September 2020 12:21 (three years ago) link

Oh, she found it amusing (rightly), that in the miniseries someone actually says "OK, Boomer."

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 25 September 2020 12:22 (three years ago) link

Man, felt like Cain was around for much longer than three episodes.

Donald Trump Also Sucks, Of Course (milo z), Tuesday, 29 September 2020 04:19 (three years ago) link

Good character! Disappointing that she's killed off.

Which reminds me - one of the dumbest decisions the producers made, IMO, was to put Tigh in an eyepatch. He's the best actor on the show - don't cover his eyes! Idiocy.

The Chief Tyrol/refining ship episode is infuriating. Roslin and Adama doing one of the unexplained shifts from benevolence to acting like monsters, a window into the fleet that gets three quarters of an episode, wrapped up with Roslin giving a patronizing speech.

― koogs, Saturday, September 19, 2020 2:02 PM (two weeks ago) bookmarkflaglink

I was once told in pre internet times, that the corners from all Rizla papers were shipped to Sydney Opera house to provide the snow for their annual Christmas shows...

I expect something like that happens within the fleet.
