Poster known as Left has also gone.

once again find myself reflecting on the fact that the reputedly hostile and unwelcoming ukpol thread routinely comprises valued euro contributors and is even friendly to the occasional confused yank who wanders in having just heard about something called Brexit while if someone dares chime in on uspol when living in a country that only shares a land border with the USA it’s “where the FUCK do you get off, outlander”

Gab B. Nebsit (wins), Sunday, 20 September 2020 16:14 (three years ago) link

wins otm, the only real meaning of my comment was disbelieving laughter that a site where most posters are American is “free to bash Americans” and where non Americans commenting on USpol threads (the whole 5 million of them cluttering the boards ) are told to fuck off as though there’s no difference between being a foreigner commenting and a foreigner commenting as though they know better.

scampo italiano (gyac), Sunday, 20 September 2020 16:17 (three years ago) link

that's really not the case though...I think most ppl undertstand that if there's any country in the world noncitizens are justified (and welcome!)in chiming in on it's the U.S. It was that he was constantly claiming to have more knowlege about this place than any of the rest of us who have been suffering through it *in person* our whole lives.

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Sunday, 20 September 2020 16:20 (three years ago) link

Oh I’m not talking about fred

Gab B. Nebsit (wins), Sunday, 20 September 2020 16:21 (three years ago) link

Ah ok but who?

I'm hard pressed to think of another example over the years in a poster has been asked to shut up in U.S. political threads because of his/her citizenry. I mean I think almost everyone in those threads already has some sense of not being counted as an American in the first place

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Sunday, 20 September 2020 16:26 (three years ago) link

Yeah neither was I, and I specifically highlighted the difference in my comment to avoid people suggesting I was.

scampo italiano (gyac), Sunday, 20 September 2020 16:28 (three years ago) link

Lol really? You can’t think of any example of, say, a Canadian getting this treatment? Hell you guys do it to Americans who moved to Canada

Gab B. Nebsit (wins), Sunday, 20 September 2020 16:32 (three years ago) link

I'm hard pressed to think of another example over the years in a poster has been asked to shut up in U.S. political threads because of his/her citizenry.

For what it's worth, I was specifically told to stay off American political threads by someone two or three years ago. Didn't much care, didn't stop me.

Monte Scampino (Le Bateau Ivre), Sunday, 20 September 2020 16:38 (three years ago) link

xp well that's bullshit and you *shouldn't* care

sorry gyac I somehow read past that

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Sunday, 20 September 2020 16:38 (three years ago) link

Trump's done a much better job of curtailing my posting than that particular poster did.

clemenza, Sunday, 20 September 2020 16:44 (three years ago) link

wins and gyac otm.

I wish the rest of the world could afford not to give a fuck about your shitty politics, but you are an imperialist superpower. I obviously harbour no ill will towards American ILXors – on the contrary, I'm rooting for y'all, and wishing you all the best – but not being pissed at the US proper is a tall order, even if you're not from there.

pomenitul, Sunday, 20 September 2020 16:47 (three years ago) link

I'll be honest: I'm more nervous as a casual Raptors fan posting in I Love Hoops--those guys are hardcore.

clemenza, Sunday, 20 September 2020 16:50 (three years ago) link

how do i shot moon? (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 20 September 2020 16:53 (three years ago) link

(Now picturing some random Cassius going 'man, I really wish those Phoenicians would stop chiming in with their horrendous takes on the Roman Senate'.)

pomenitul, Sunday, 20 September 2020 16:55 (three years ago) link

Lol pom there’s a great bit in Rome where all these Gauls are made Senators by Caesar and the patricians like Cato are absolutely infuriated at all the hairy foreigners trooping in

scampo italiano (gyac), Sunday, 20 September 2020 16:57 (three years ago) link

I wish the rest of the world could afford not to give a fuck about your shitty politics,

I mean I think we all wish the same, nobody is asking that anyone not give a shit about this mess. I think I should bow out on this one because I have no beef with anything anybody's saying here, only w/r/t to Fred that he wasn't an insufferable trolling prick on the politics threads

error prone wolf syndicate (Hadrian VIII), Sunday, 20 September 2020 16:58 (three years ago) link

xp Claudius was zinged for this irl iirc

how do i shot moon? (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 20 September 2020 16:59 (three years ago) link

Caesar gets zinged for it, among other things, in the show with a load of knives

scampo italiano (gyac), Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:00 (three years ago) link

Haha, how fucking dare they. I mean, it's not like the ever-encroaching Empire affects them or anything.

xps

"Italy," it was asserted, "is not so feeble as to be unable to furnish its own capital with a senate. Once our native-born citizens sufficed for peoples of our own kin, and we are by no means dissatisfied with the Rome of the past. To this day we cite examples, which under our old customs the Roman character exhibited as to valour and renown. Is it a small thing that Veneti and Insubres have already burst into the Senate-house, unless a mob of foreigners, a troop of captives, so to say, is now forced upon us? What distinctions will be left for the remnants of our noble houses, or for any impoverished senators from Latium? Every place will be crowded with these millionaires, whose ancestors of the second and third generations at the head of hostile tribes destroyed our armies with fire and sword, and actually besieged the divine Julius at Alesia. These are recent memories. What if there were to rise up the remembrance of those who fell in Rome's citadel and at her altar by the hands of these same barbarians! Let them enjoy indeed the title of citizens, but let them not vulgarise the distinctions of the Senate and the honours of office."

It’s not being foreign that seems to be an issue, it’s the “can’t believe you’re all too stupid to see this” attitude that gets people FP’d into oblivion

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:06 (three years ago) link

the only person that was done to who moved to canada was a sock/troll who was posting like a 17 year old and saying things like "i don't care though, i live in canada," which i think invites some maltreatment

superdeep borehole (harbl), Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:07 (three years ago) link

scampo italiano (gyac), Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:08 (three years ago) link

The emperor's response to that proto-fascist bit is quite fascinating, and considerably more progressive than anything that's ever come out of Donnie Trump's mouth.

pomenitul, Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:09 (three years ago) link

it's largely unknowable and Robert Graves hasn't helped the picture but Claudius seems to have been a good egg, for an Emperor

how do i shot moon? (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:12 (three years ago) link

It’s not being foreign that seems to be an issue, it’s the “can’t believe you’re all too stupid to see this” attitude that gets people FP’d into oblivion

This is mostly true. I can think of specific instances where posters (whom I otherwise like) told non-US posters who aren't Fred to stay out of the US politics threads.

pomenitul, Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:13 (three years ago) link

I can too, I think it’s mostly resorting to ad hominem because a real argument would be uncomfortable/take too long to type

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:15 (three years ago) link

That makes it worse, though?

scampo italiano (gyac), Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:16 (three years ago) link

I think it's hard for Americans to grok just how much of an indelible mark their political squabbles leave on other countries, and I'm not just talking about obvious examples like Irak.

pomenitul, Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:19 (three years ago) link

Most posters should stay out of US politics threads. Including Americans.

Notes on Scampo (tokyo rosemary), Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:22 (three years ago) link

A sensible take tbh.

wasn’t defending the practice

sound of scampo talk to me (El Tomboto), Sunday, 20 September 2020 17:50 (three years ago) link

Far be it from me to suggest that “oh yeah well you’re a foreigner” being the ad hominem to which ppl automatically resort says something about the tenor of the country thread, but
