I suspect that has at least some truth to it. Also possible, they would've split it into two collections for more money

i would have paid 60 bucks for galaxy 1&2 but not just one

ciderpress, Friday, 25 September 2020 05:18 (three years ago) link

lagoon's reviews pretty much line up with my own, down to the planets on galaxy 1 being too small (often, at least. i think. it's been a while)

galaxy 2 ruled

Karl Malone, Friday, 25 September 2020 05:49 (three years ago) link

the small planet physics of galaxy 1 seemed like a sub-level from another recent 3D mario, but blown up into every stage

Karl Malone, Friday, 25 September 2020 05:50 (three years ago) link

Oh shit, the second Ori is now out on Switch?! When did that happen?!

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 26 September 2020 23:35 (three years ago) link

it was in the same direct as the monster hunter announcements a couple weeks ago

Looks lovely

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 27 September 2020 00:15 (three years ago) link

First game was an absolute joy and totally gorgeous. The new one I understand to be more of the same, and then some. I'm considering pulling the full-price trigger (which is of course half that of your typical Nintendo title).

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 27 September 2020 02:51 (three years ago) link

I have trouble keeping up with this stuff, and tbh Digital Foundry often gets stuck in the weeds, but I thought this was fascinating, how they were able to get this painterly Xbox game running on the Switch at all:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kH6wTpIObxE

Sounds like the Switch needs a few patches, from what I've read, but the developers are on it. Seems like an example of how well a port can be done if the original devs (with all their understanding of every last detail) do it.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 27 September 2020 13:39 (three years ago) link

(60fps is nearly everywhere) but you may notice a dip into the upper 50s from time to time

Voiceover: you will not

Andrew Farrell, Sunday, 27 September 2020 14:07 (three years ago) link

Yeah, seriously. In this case, issue seems to be intermittent crashes.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 27 September 2020 14:09 (three years ago) link

looks gorgeous; please post when it's appropriately patched so i can buy?

Fuck the NRA (ulysses), Sunday, 27 September 2020 23:01 (three years ago) link

They seem to be working hard at it. For what it's worth, not everybody on Switch has been reporting problems, and even the PC and Xbox release had their need for patches. So I bet it will be fixed sooner rather than later. But I will report ASAP!

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 27 September 2020 23:03 (three years ago) link

enjoying this second ori game

Left joycon is fucked so returned it to Nintendo for repair/replacement, I should really look into setting it up on my TV but it seems like effort, c/d?

seumas milm (gyac), Tuesday, 29 September 2020 11:06 (three years ago) link

joycons being shite is why i almost exclusively play on the tv with a 8bitdo pad

docked switch: classic

chihuahuau, Tuesday, 29 September 2020 11:34 (three years ago) link

I managed to reduce my left joycon's drift by 95% with some compressed air and q-tips dipped in isopropyl alcohol

trapped out the barndo (crüt), Tuesday, 29 September 2020 13:35 (three years ago) link

i got lucky with my left joycon i guess

ciderpress, Tuesday, 29 September 2020 13:45 (three years ago) link

Finally starting getting drift with Animal Crossing this year. If it gets really bad I'll probably just finally give in and buy the Pro Controller, or one of them 8bitdos.

Nhex, Tuesday, 29 September 2020 13:47 (three years ago) link

xps to crüt yeah I tried this but no luck, was moving involuntarily by the time I sent the thing off

seumas milm (gyac), Tuesday, 29 September 2020 13:52 (three years ago) link

pro controller is great and totally worth it btw; it should really ship with the system.

i wish the dpad was fighting game capable but its oversensitive otherwise yeah its a great controller

ciderpress, Tuesday, 29 September 2020 14:29 (three years ago) link

Pro Controller is one thing imo that Nintendo truly does better than everyone else. That battery is a work of wonder.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 29 September 2020 14:30 (three years ago) link

they used leftover 3ds batteries in it so it has insane battery life

ciderpress, Tuesday, 29 September 2020 14:30 (three years ago) link

Should I buy my daughter Zelda so I can play in on her Switch? not like she ever uses it anyway

thomasintrouble, Tuesday, 29 September 2020 14:33 (three years ago) link

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 29 September 2020 17:12 (three years ago) link

I have never really been into video games (and in fact felt some level of disdain for the whole endeavor based on some "gamer" types I've known). I had an NES and SNES 30ish years ago and played a few N64 and PS1 games but have spent probably a total of 30 minutes playing video games in the past 20 years - I've never touched any Xbox or post PS1 controller.

But my son and I have been playing old school NES/SNES/GBA games on a raspberry pi since corona lockdown and he's gotten into watching youtube videos of people playing kirby and mario games recent vintage, so I went for it and bought a switch because they were around after not being available for a while and I imagine they might not be available closer to december. It's sitting in my closet right now until santa brings it for my six year old.

What all do I need to do or purchase in terms of controllers? Can we play a two player game right out of the box or do I need to get some other controller? HOW DO GAMES WORK? Like there's digital things and physical ones too? What games are good if I loved the hell out of mariokart, marios 1/2/3, super mario brothers, donkey kong country ages ago but was never into zelda and have literally never played any first person shooter type thing? Also my kid LOVES pokemon go but neither of us had any any interest in any of the old roms I installed.

joygoat, Tuesday, 29 September 2020 17:30 (three years ago) link

you can play most 2-player switch games with the controllers that come with it but i wouldn't recommend it, especially for adults. they are tiny little things. you should get at least one extra controller.

you can buy most games digitally or physically. i recommend buying a big SD card and only buying games digitally, so you don't have to keep track of the little cartridges. the only exception is if you think you might get a separate switch in the future and have it assigned to a different person (like your kid). in that case, the physical games make it easier to share games.

na (NA), Tuesday, 29 September 2020 17:34 (three years ago) link

how old is your kid?

na (NA), Tuesday, 29 September 2020 17:35 (three years ago) link

v. smart play to buy it now , good move. it will definitely get worse by November
the 32GB built-in will tide you over for a little while, but i'd keep an eye out for deals on SD cards immediately
easy picks are Zelda, Mario Odyssey, Smash Bros., Mario Kart, everything else is gravy

Nhex, Tuesday, 29 September 2020 17:38 (three years ago) link

Kid turns six in late november so this might be a bit early for him but being stuck at home all winter feels like it's going to be dire so hoping this will help with that.

joygoat, Tuesday, 29 September 2020 17:38 (three years ago) link

if you subscribe to Nintendo's online service ($20 a year) you gain access to tons of NES and SNES games as long as your subscription lasts
the online shop is hard to navigate so use Dekudeals instead to find out what digital games are on sale

my almost 6 year old kid loves playing mario kart 8 with me. she loves animal crossing and splatoon 2 as well but there's no local 2-player mode on those. she also loved super mario odyssey, which technically has a local 2-player mode but i found that option pretty confusing to play.
