sometimes i forget how much i disliked wade cos he kinda washed it all away in his late career.

also grayson allen tho he kinda stopped blatantly tripping and kicking people in the NBA, with good reason. but we know it's still in him somewhere
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 October 2020 21:02 (four years ago) link
really only aware of his college career, but i find it amazing that someone would choose to pay miles plumlee $13m per year to play basketball
― mookieproof, Tuesday, 20 October 2020 21:06 (four years ago) link
miles had a year with the suns when he was pretty good! looked like he might be the better plumlee but he never was good after that season.

the worst contracts as far as win shares produced for the team that signed the contract (just cutting it off at <2 win shares):
miles plumlee 0.1 (!) - traded in feb 2017 for roy hibbert, who never played for the bucks, and spencer hawes, who produced an additional .6 win sharesmozgov 1.1parsons 1.3dellavedova 1.8
so it has to be parsons given the extra $30M. admittedly, the plumlee era in milwaukee was hazy but in reading back it seems that he just never fit and never played since they had to find time for the squad of jon henson, greg monroe, and thon maker. but they traded him for expirings and other than opportunity cost no real harm was done.
what's interesting looking back is that a lot of these guys had decent 1st and 2nd seasons on these contracts before meeting the cliff. good reminder that role players/bench guys are can have very fleeting/random performance peaks.

I'm voting mozgov, but I admit it's a target rich environment and almost every vote is a prospective winner!
― the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Wednesday, 21 October 2020 02:03 (four years ago) link
the year before miles plumlee signed this deal he averaged 14 minutes, 5 points and 4 boards. this past season, after being waived, his $12.5m salary was more than several legit starting quarterbacks and all but nine players in the entire NHL
i mean i know it's a different game and there are far fewer players etc. but that is still amazing to me

i'm thinking i should've voted for delly... $40 million for -- at best -- a back up point guard is completely crazy. at least the rest of these guys are either tall, or could shoot... tho now we return to the question of evan turner. hmmmmmm

― the unappreciated charisma of cows (Aimless), Thursday, 22 October 2020 03:28 (four years ago) link
in my win shares research delly and turner were the next two guys on the list, somewhere between 2 and 3 iirc

Another notable contract not listed was the Conley contract for 5 years 152M for the Grizz. Was the highest contract in league history for a bit there. Pretty insane for a guy that never made an all Star or all nba team.

Just now seeing this thread. Had to vote Parsons because, in addition to the spot-on statistical analysis upthread, unlike most of these guys they were really relying on him to be a key piece. In understanding teams’ interest in Evan Turner despite his complete inability to shoot, I think his lovable self-deprecating sense of humor about his complete inability to shoot is an underrated factor.

i think the way to explain this is that even as the ratings for the NBA go down, the value of live sports as one of the only things that can reliably get millions of people to pay attention to the same TV program at the same time has only increased. you also have the tech companies coming in and wanting to speculate in live sports, so even as i.e. turner attempted to play hardball w/ the NBA over the new contract, their leverage was undercut by new competitors w/ tons of money that were perhaps willing to overpay in order to enter the space.
one assumes there's a post-television future where the value of live sports craters -- part of what is keeping the value high now is TV companies seeing sports as one of the only things that allows them to cling to that traditional revenue model. but you have to think that is merely a long, drawn out war that they will one day be forced to concede. and from there will there still be companies willing to fork over billions of upfront dollars yearly to sports leagues? idk
― slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 2 October 2024 15:24 (one month ago) link
the NBA is probably headed to a longterm future where regular season games are seen as having little to no broadcast value and are aired directly & monetized almost fully by the teams themselves. the suns are kinda already doing this i think? and then playoff games/the finals as events that capture some level of audience at the same time will be what other companies largely pay the NBA for, with some amount of regular season games included as national broadcasts almost as loss leader/promotional vehicle type situations
― slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 2 October 2024 15:28 (one month ago) link
nuggets just unveiled a direct to consumer streaming thing too. though they had been in contentious negotiations with comcast for 3 years so idk if that’s not really the same thing you’re talking about
― brony james (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 2 October 2024 15:39 (one month ago) link
good analysis jordan thx i know espn has been squeezing the cable companies for a bigger fees for a while now which makes sense in that context
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 2 October 2024 15:53 (one month ago) link
ESPN is basically the irrational actor that drives the phenomenon insofar as their whole business is based around live sports, thus they have an extreme incentive to prop up the value of live sports, even at a time when the value of live sports -- or really live sports that aren't the NFL -- is at an existential crossroads. if they were acting rationally they would be attempting to curb the costs of broadcast rights, but that would directly devalue their company. so they're fueling the bubble in the hopes that it never actually pops (and instead are cutting costs by doing stuff like laying off zach lowe)
― slob wizard (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 2 October 2024 16:23 (one month ago) link
