@lagoon I’ve killed a ton of hours on the Burnout Paradise remaster.

xp Dan I - I will never trust Bennett Foddy, the man who created Getting Over It, to tell me anything lol

Also there have been some big strides in netcode (at least for 1v1 fighting games, which I feel would be applicable here) even in the time since that article was written in 2014. Parsec alone gives pretty surprising results, and people are already using that for Towerfall

Nhex, Friday, 13 November 2020 18:00 (three years ago) link

haha wow, Bennett Foddy wrote that article!? I had no idea

Dan I., Friday, 13 November 2020 18:04 (three years ago) link

I actually agree with him that online can't really replicate the classic online home/arcade experience of playing with others in the same room, and I get that there are many indie developers who focus on that aspect. All power to them! I've been involved with local gaming scenes, and it's tough, but it does still exist, somewhat

But most people play games online these days, and especially in this moment, 2020, any multiplayer game needs to get it together imo

Nhex, Friday, 13 November 2020 18:12 (three years ago) link

But most people play games online these days

Most people play games on their phone, dude.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 13 November 2020 18:26 (three years ago) link

Yeah, but we're not talking about Sage Solitaire here or whatever. No one is playing Among Us over LAN or bluetooth.

Nhex, Friday, 13 November 2020 18:28 (three years ago) link

its funny how nintendo who are famously the local multiplayer holdouts are having like their best year ever this year regardless

ciderpress, Friday, 13 November 2020 18:58 (three years ago) link

a fair point. but every Smash Bros player i've ever known bitches endlessly about the netcode
And Animal Crossing's multiplayer is very optional (and frankly, pretty badly done - i mean, geez, anytime gets on or off the island every player has to freeze in place for loading screens...)

Nhex, Friday, 13 November 2020 19:10 (three years ago) link

oh yeah its certainly not because their online play is good

ciderpress, Friday, 13 November 2020 19:14 (three years ago) link

my partner plays about four hours of animal crossing every friday and uses it as a way to hang out with her 12 year old niece and the machinations of connecting to one another's island are so byzantine and poorly attuned that you REALLY have to want to make it happen... which is sort of nostalgic and touching in one sense but dumb as fuck in a much more real way.

three weeks pass...

I worried that I wouldn't enjoy Link's Awakening, as I'd never played the original on gameboy. The presence of goombas, etc., is still a bit disturbing, but it feels so classic. I love it.

we can dance forever at covideotheque (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 9 December 2020 18:25 (three years ago) link

also feels like it will be short, so I'm glad I waited for the sale.

we can dance forever at covideotheque (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 9 December 2020 18:25 (three years ago) link

i didnt love it, gave up pretty fast, every part there was one weird solution like throw some powder on this torch, it looks very nice tho

lag∞n, Wednesday, 9 December 2020 18:45 (three years ago) link

the original game is my fav zelda don't really love the remake style though

ciderpress, Wednesday, 9 December 2020 18:58 (three years ago) link

its about the same length as link to the past iirc

ciderpress, Wednesday, 9 December 2020 19:00 (three years ago) link

yeah, the magic powder working as the candle took me a bit. I couldn't figure that part out, so I went back to the phone hut to call the shy man with information. after he confirmed I was in fact doing what I should be doing, I finally tried magic powder. I was a little bit annoyed, but I think aimlessly trying bombs at random walls was a classic feature of original Zelda. "Magic Power" is a catch all for this approach.

we can dance forever at covideotheque (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 9 December 2020 19:01 (three years ago) link

excuse me, "magic powder"

I loved Link's Awakening on the Game Boy, but part of the joy of that game for me was the economical use of the A and B buttons for all the items, which I think is not the case in the Switch remake. (i.e. they give you a dedicated button for your shield and I think your sword too.) I missed the sale and replayed the Game Boy version last year so will probably pass on the remake for now

real muthaphuckkin jeez (crüt), Thursday, 10 December 2020 05:13 (three years ago) link

Really? I felt like Link to the Past was way longer, but definitely could be my faulty memories. Def agree that some of the puzzle solutions are very 0_0 and fitting the time in which it was originally designed

Nhex, Thursday, 10 December 2020 05:51 (three years ago) link

No video game will ever match the exhilaration I felt at 10 years old when I finally figured out how to reach the Tower of Hera in LttP

real muthaphuckkin jeez (crüt), Thursday, 10 December 2020 15:41 (three years ago) link

lttp is so good, they shd remake that one cute graphics

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 December 2020 15:47 (three years ago) link

they should make new games imo

really they should devote all their energy to making more super mario odyssey, just crank em out, dont stop

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 December 2020 16:24 (three years ago) link

saw a thing w someone reading the tea leaves re nintendo hardware partners quarterly reports and whatnot and it seems like theyre prob coming out with an upgraded switch, but what was interesting was then they speculated that nintendo could keep the switch platform and just keep releasing yearly hardware and software upgrades like they do with phones rather than the whole new systems every x number of years as is standard in the video gaem world, and i think its a good idea!

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 December 2020 16:30 (three years ago) link

I’ve been hoping they do that since I got my hands on one, they have the perfect device for that and they’re never going back to the performance race so why not

is right unfortunately (silby), Thursday, 10 December 2020 16:32 (three years ago) link

That sounds like a very un-Nintendo approach, & I have to admit I would miss them coming out with some new weird distinctive hardware idea every gen.

american primitive stylophone (zchyrs), Thursday, 10 December 2020 16:36 (three years ago) link

i mean the device is still selling like hot cakes and building up a library of games forever seems good, and by the time youve reached the traditional new platform point in the cycle a lot of ppl will be ready to buy a second switch anyway cause their old one crapped out or you cant play the new games on it or its just better has 4k or whatever

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 December 2020 16:42 (three years ago) link

They can do wacky ideas as accessories, and have done three already in the switch’s lifecycle: Labo (neat but didn’t set world on fire), Ring Fit (big success it seems), and now Mario Kart Live (tbd but I kind of want it lol)

is right unfortunately (silby), Thursday, 10 December 2020 16:45 (three years ago) link

Honestly if they would make more of the back catalogue available and do firmware updates, it’d be the perfect console. I’d spend money on decent ports of games I never got to play.

scampostiltskin (gyac), Thursday, 10 December 2020 16:45 (three years ago) link

gotta think the opportunity to wipe out all the work and risk associated with making a new console is pretty tempting

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 December 2020 16:51 (three years ago) link

Mario Kart Live looks so good. the hundo price tag seems worth it. but I'm reluctant to get it for our household because it almost seems too good. what can you show a 5 year old kid after they've seen that?

we can dance forever at covideotheque (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 10 December 2020 16:54 (three years ago) link

Don’t companies take a loss on consoles since forever

scampostiltskin (gyac), Thursday, 10 December 2020 17:06 (three years ago) link

I thought Nintendo alone refused to

stet, Thursday, 10 December 2020 17:15 (three years ago) link

The sheer excitement and hype for new consoles (particularly of THIS cycle in the middle of a pandemic!) can't be replicated

Nhex, Thursday, 10 December 2020 17:15 (three years ago) link

Nintendo’s hardware isn’t a loss leader historically iirc

Xbox has already tentatively moved beyond the generational cycle. “Xbox series X” should’ve just been called “Xbox” and they are cowards for not doing this

is right unfortunately (silby), Thursday, 10 December 2020 17:17 (three years ago) link

thats another thing about keeping 1 platform is it gives you time to get the build cost down

lag∞n, Thursday, 10 December 2020 17:19 (three years ago) link

i do wonder if the ps5 won't be the last BIG NEXT GEN BOX
they certainly went all in

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 10 December 2020 17:34 (three years ago) link

they should just do switch 2, 3, etc so it's easy to message which ones a game runs on ("switch 2 or higher") rather than some Switch Pro or New 3DS shit. I'm expecting the latter though

ciderpress, Thursday, 10 December 2020 17:37 (three years ago) link

i continue to think the upgrades are likely to be peripherals moreso than systems in the years to come: haptic feedback gloves, HUD glasses, jawpieces that allow for silent typing, improved VR, cocksocks and whatnot

the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 10 December 2020 17:39 (three years ago) link

preorder Mario Apocalypse and get a free branded green pipe cocksock
