an old friend of mine who has owned a record store for years always prices stuff very fair, def less than discogs, I asked him why and he said "a record store should be a river not a lake"

which I love the imagery but basically he wants stuff going out and stuff coming in at all times, if that means getting $10 less than three theoretical price online so be it, he wants there always to be new stuff when someone comes in

Absolutely, nothing more off putting with these stores than going a month later and seeing the same records in the same order. In college at Green Bay i dropped a lot of money at this one small shop because it seemed like every week there was a new stack of stuff and it made me feel like if I didn’t go there frequently I’d miss something good

frogbs, Thursday, 26 November 2020 20:48 (three years ago) link

That makes me think of Rat in Camberwell, which has a great flow of new stuff. It tends to be cheaper than elsewhere but damn you have to get there early.

a record store should be a river not a lake

love this and so true

the least famous person you were surprised to discover (emsworth), Thursday, 26 November 2020 20:59 (three years ago) link

agreed, and that's also good inventory practice for any brick & mortar really, something that doesn't sell is taking up space where something that does sell could be

I’m ShedRekkids on Discogs. I don’t have a ton of stuff listed, as I do prefer to sell locally if possible. If any of you do decide to buy something, send me a message about it first & I’ll sling you an ILX discount! I’m only shipping in NA right now because tracking overseas is hella expensive & I’ve had some scares with untracked parcels (although everything I’ve shipped has — eventually — arrived)

I love the River/Lake quote! Def feel that, even if I don’t always practice it.

italian seller says:

LIVE TEST ON WATSAPP OR FACETIME AVAILABLE!

not for me, exactly, but i appreciate the enthusiasm / commitment !

budo jeru, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 02:32 (three years ago) link

that is pretty cool!

Ive definitely gotten a lot of busted-sounding records that have been alleged to be VG+, ime its a major black box of a rating, but I dont get mad bc I always figure if I'm paying enough that I'd be mad if it turned out to be overgraded, its a sign that I should just go the extra mile to get NM

an hour to post a CD for £2 standing in a crowded shop where some wankers aren't wearing masks. no fucking way. all items expired, phew.

for those in the US this has been the only way i've shipped anything since march: https://tools.usps.com/schedule-pickup-steps.htm (tho idk how widespread availability is)

i've been thinking of getting a scale and starting to print my own labels tbh

budo jeru, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 16:16 (three years ago) link

100% the way to go in my experience, makes shipping into a routine rather than anxiety nightmare chore

adam, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 16:45 (three years ago) link

I sell so infrequently (and not actually on Discogs, through a private group) that it's NBD but if I did it regularly I would absolutely go that route.

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Tuesday, 8 December 2020 16:48 (three years ago) link

I’ve been weighing parcels at home and printing own postage if necessary. For vinyl I’ve started sending using Hermes - can buy the postage online the print the label on a machine at the wee shop down the road from me where I drop the parcels off. Been reliable so far. Maybe worth seeing if that’s an option?

hamicle, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 16:51 (three years ago) link

yeah i'm not exactly a power seller but even shipping a few record out once or twice a week i find a kitchen scale and $100 brother laser printer to be invaluable.

plus then you can print out recipes and shit too instead of cooking from your phone like an animal

adam, Tuesday, 8 December 2020 16:52 (three years ago) link

Holy shit, this is so cost-effective to do that I can't imagine *not* doing it. Please do this and don't wait in the post office.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 11 December 2020 22:56 (three years ago) link

lol I even have a scale and I'm STILL too lazy to print at home

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Friday, 11 December 2020 23:05 (three years ago) link

(I realize that is counter-intuitive and wrong)

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Friday, 11 December 2020 23:06 (three years ago) link

I was handed down a scale last last year and I'm really glad to have it now. The post office nearby always has a ridiculous line (which now goes out the door due to social distancing and the ridiculously small amount of space inside) so ever since March, I just drop everything in, postage paid, into the mailbox outside about 10-15 minutes before it gets cleared out. Zero stress.

birdistheword, Saturday, 12 December 2020 00:58 (three years ago) link

okay, any suggestions on a brand of scale? ideally something i could use in the kitchen too while i'm at it. last place i worked we had a couple avaweigh 20lb scales that i coveted — far better than the flimsy flat ones that always seem to turn off in the middle of use. but maybe i don't need to spend $50 actually

budo jeru, Saturday, 12 December 2020 02:00 (three years ago) link

I just got a lil one at Office Depot for 20-30 bucks I think

Mine’s a Dymo M5

brimstead, Saturday, 12 December 2020 02:30 (three years ago) link

it’s small though, so for lps you have to press the hold button on it cuz otherwise you can’t see the reading lol

brimstead, Saturday, 12 December 2020 02:31 (three years ago) link

friend of mine recommends the dymo sp5 and says he's used it for over a dozen years, with the caveat that it only goes to 5 pounds

budo jeru, Saturday, 12 December 2020 02:31 (three years ago) link

Yeah, mine's basically a kitchen scale. I took it thinking I'd use it just for coffee beans (and still do), but it's perfect for small packages.

birdistheword, Saturday, 12 December 2020 02:43 (three years ago) link

I’m pretty sure e-40 rapped about weighing drugs on an iPhone before it was actually possible

brimstead, Saturday, 12 December 2020 02:53 (three years ago) link

Mine’s a hand-me-down Jamie Oliver! It’s a nifty little nipper, though; I couldn’t manage without it, especially in post-ASP world where all new items are weighed.

mike t-diva, Saturday, 12 December 2020 07:57 (three years ago) link

okay, any suggestions on a brand of scale?

I have this and it works fine: https://www.amazon.com/ACCUTECK-W-8250-50bs-Digital-Adapter-Silver/dp/B00SMHWZ42/

Played once. DO NOT MAKE IMMEDIATE PAYMENT!!! I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT DISCOGS HAS DONE TO THE SHIPPING POLICIES SINCE I LAST SOLD ON HERE. PLEASE DO NOT PAY UNTIL I HAVE SENT INVOICE!

is it just me or are entire stores consistently removing/reposting their entire inventory on here? I look at "new items for sale on my wantlist" and 75% of it is stuff I've seen before from the exact same sellers. pretty annoying because a lot of these items are at non-serious prices

frogbs, Saturday, 2 January 2021 18:02 (three years ago) link

it's absolutely the worst and basically ruins the function of the wantlist. i wish there were a way to block sellers who relist their inventory every day

budo jeru, Saturday, 2 January 2021 18:08 (three years ago) link

yeah I couldn't figure out if this was the sellers or if discogs was doing this automatically somehow. seems like it would be remarkably easy for them to prevent.

frogbs, Saturday, 2 January 2021 18:13 (three years ago) link

I used to get wantlist emails daily when I bought more and the same sellers were always appearing.

brain (krakow), Saturday, 2 January 2021 18:16 (three years ago) link

Unless you're buying multiple items a week, the wantlist in its current form is basically useless and shit.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Saturday, 2 January 2021 18:22 (three years ago) link

It also happens depending on how.stores update their listings.

Other than "blocking sellers" (which they apparently just won't allow, maybe for valid reasons) it's difficult to see a technical solution. It would have to go through some heuristic gymnastics to try and distinguish a relisted item from a genuine new listing. Even if that could be made to work it would likely add a significant processing overhead to each listing.

Noel Emits, Saturday, 2 January 2021 18:29 (three years ago) link

nothing to add except that it sucks, and I just have to take items out of my wantlist when sellers do that

howls of non-specificity (sleeve), Saturday, 2 January 2021 20:18 (three years ago) link

Their automatic postage calculation sucks. Countless times it has gotten it wrong. And then people didnt want to pay extra. Argh. Was so much better before.

candyman, Saturday, 2 January 2021 22:10 (three years ago) link

I turned off wantlist emails for that reason. Now I just check my wantlist every once in a while on the app. Probably have missed some serious bargains, but whatchagonnado?

the thing that the angry Left forbids (hardcore dilettante), Sunday, 3 January 2021 01:59 (three years ago) link

i'm wanting to purchase some regular ass old catalogue titles on cd and i think that discogs might not be my most cost effective option. i know there was a topic posted for sharing places to shop online for these kinds of things but i am having a hard time locating that topic — little help?

juno.co.uk is great, even when shipping to the US. So fast, huge / great selection, really good prices.

brotherlovesdub, Friday, 15 January 2021 18:48 (three years ago) link

you know forced exposure, right. Austin? just got a package from them the other day, they packed their CDs really well, no broken cases etc.

brimstead, Friday, 15 January 2021 21:13 (three years ago) link

i just got some cds from forced exposure, wrapped in bubble wrap, placed in a box, which was then placed in another larger box surrounded by wadded up newspaper, felt like i was in wages of fear

adam, Friday, 15 January 2021 21:39 (three years ago) link

idk it shouldn't be that difficult to tell if an item that's being added is identical to one that was recently listed

I do wish you could block sellers though, there's one in particular (KUPIKU) who has half of my wantlist at 3-5x the average price and they relist their entire stock every other day

frogbs, Tuesday, 19 January 2021 02:56 (three years ago) link

also, nobody ever buy anything from Giantleech on Discogs, awful troll and Trump supporter
