You're welcome. :)

It's not what I had in mind at first, but perhaps it also doubles as an oblique commentary on this very thread's premise.

So far most of these examples are tantamount to cool stuff young (mostly anglo) ppl are into that we olds (mutatis mutandis) missed out on. That's a pretty narrow definition of 'blindspot', but *charges headfirst into windmill*.

The concept of that comic strip is eerily similar to a very short and somewhat...lovely?...story by Tobias Wolff https://public.wsu.edu/~bryanfry/Wolff,%20Bullet%20in%20the%20Brain.pdf

"Bi" Dong A Ban He Try (the table is the table), Wednesday, 16 December 2020 22:48 (three years ago) link

ha, interesting coincidence - the character is a long-time recurring feature in the comedy magazine Viz*, but that one strip is so similar to the short story that one could totally imagine Wolff reading it and deciding to riff it on a type of pedant (or specific critic) that he personally loathed.

* based on the brother of founder/publisher and cartoonists Chris Donald and Simon Donald, diagnosed as aspie decades later, but compared to Mr Spock when they were growing up

huge rant (sic), Wednesday, 16 December 2020 23:08 (three years ago) link

Absolutely!

I'm not a big fan of Wolff's writing, generally speaking, but I've taught that story a few times, and I've grown quite fond of it. Students love it, too.

Metal poll aside, yeah. Just too much of a mental hassle.

A Scampo Darkly (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 22 December 2020 15:52 (three years ago) link

aw but how are we going to avoid taytay's relentless insincere march to glory ;)

imago, Tuesday, 22 December 2020 15:54 (three years ago) link

Thanks, LBI! I'll probably just post a bigger unranked list to another thread at some point in January.

xp the time has come for a new generation of specific users to carry that vindictive torch.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 22 December 2020 16:04 (three years ago) link

Post your unranked best #100 and I'll lap it up ;)

xp I regret to inform you the new generation is on the tay-tay train.

A Scampo Darkly (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 22 December 2020 16:06 (three years ago) link

the biggest problem I have with taytay is that she isn't even bad; she's even quite good sometimes, which makes it incredibly hard for me to just spew invective

imago, Tuesday, 22 December 2020 16:08 (three years ago) link

by that i mean to say that in my subjective judgement her music is often relatively pleasant, if not often truly exciting, hence going off on one about her would have to involve me ignoring my actual opinions

imago, Tuesday, 22 December 2020 16:10 (three years ago) link

thus we reach taytay impasse, where i essentially have to stop worrying and love the bomb

imago, Tuesday, 22 December 2020 16:11 (three years ago) link

lots of cheap 'spirit drink' in my coffee today

imago, Tuesday, 22 December 2020 16:12 (three years ago) link

Same. There's a harmlessness about taytay's music that pre-disarms a lot of criticism; or rather, does not invite to go off on. There's some really good songs on both albums from this year, some mediocre and meh-songs, too. There aren't any real stakes, not like before it seems.

A Scampo Darkly (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 22 December 2020 16:20 (three years ago) link

yeah. basically i won't go cray-cray about taytay unless both her albums hit the top ten, at which point i'll have some serious questions

imago, Tuesday, 22 December 2020 16:22 (three years ago) link

so you'll ixnay the cray-cray for tay-tay?

A Scampo Darkly (Le Bateau Ivre), Tuesday, 22 December 2020 16:27 (three years ago) link

in essence

there are a few 2020-popular artists (not fiona apple) i might be prepared to get a little more classic-ljish about tho
