They can do wacky ideas as accessories, and have done three already in the switch’s lifecycle: Labo (neat but didn’t set world on fire), Ring Fit (big success it seems), and now Mario Kart Live (tbd but I kind of want it lol)

Honestly if they would make more of the back catalogue available and do firmware updates, it’d be the perfect console. I’d spend money on decent ports of games I never got to play.

gotta think the opportunity to wipe out all the work and risk associated with making a new console is pretty tempting
― lag∞n, Thursday, 10 December 2020 16:51 (three years ago) link
Mario Kart Live looks so good. the hundo price tag seems worth it. but I'm reluctant to get it for our household because it almost seems too good. what can you show a 5 year old kid after they've seen that?

Xbox has already tentatively moved beyond the generational cycle. “Xbox series X” should’ve just been called “Xbox” and they are cowards for not doing this

they should just do switch 2, 3, etc so it's easy to message which ones a game runs on ("switch 2 or higher") rather than some Switch Pro or New 3DS shit. I'm expecting the latter though

i continue to think the upgrades are likely to be peripherals moreso than systems in the years to come: haptic feedback gloves, HUD glasses, jawpieces that allow for silent typing, improved VR, cocksocks and whatnot
― the serious avant-garde universalist right now (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 10 December 2020 17:39 (three years ago) link
preorder Mario Apocalypse and get a free branded green pipe cocksock
PlayStation kind of “owns” calling things 2 or whatever but yeah just put the number really small in the corner of the console and deemphasize it maybe.Or call it Switch Plus, then Switch +2 later on, give it an version number but with some cute on the side idk

Microsoft’s gaming strategy def moving towards “we want you to play our great content wherever you are but it’s best on Xbox, also wouldn’t you like to pay us $120 a year for gamepass”, they didn’t even force Halo out the door this year to sell the console with. They acquired a lot of studios in the last several years and they’re not going to be publishing only Xbox exclusivesNintendo is Nintendo, basically doing their own thing on their own schedule and now that they have a four-quadrant hit of a device and their first party games are shipping to good reviews without being rushed and selling on an evergreen basis and they have only one platform to fill the calendar for they can keep humming indefinitely if they don’t decide to replace the switch with, like, a plush Yoshi with a screen for eyes and motion controls in the arms.Sony is the only platform incumbent left in the dynamic (one might say they won) that was established in the Xbox/PS2/GameCube generation, Xbox acts like they are but I really think it’s a smokescreen.
― is right unfortunately (silby), Thursday, 10 December 2020 17:53 (three years ago) link
sony seems to have basically punted japan for the PS5 so that changes the dynamic somewhat if the switch is the only viable console to develop games for in that country

i haven't played smash bros since the n64 — the newer games seem kinda dumb with the ten billion characters to choose from

sephiroth isn't even a nintendo character!!
sonic has been in smash bros since like 2008!

the hilariously large roster is the main appeal of the newer ones
I've got no idea what a sephiroth is, but when we do play Smash Bros. we usually just set character to random.

Me? That's Final Fantasy, right? No, I don't have any idea what that game/those games are, really. I just assume all the characters I don't recognize in Switch are Final Fantasy, Pokemon, or some other beloved legacy games I've never played.

ok. just fyi that's a recreation of a much discussed and traumatic-for-some scene from final fantasy 7

Well it's safe to assume the characters you don't know are from a game you don't know, yes.

I do know that people love the Final Fantasy ... music? And is this the series with the utterly impenetrable and/or confusing chronology/plot? Or am I thinking of Metal Gear Solid (another series I've never played)? Anyway, yeah, don't know much about games I've never played, but I do recognize a few Pokemon or Solid Snake characters here and there despite being unfamiliar with the properties. There are a host of Smash Bros. characters that are total blanks to me, though. Marth, Roy, Ike, Bob, Phil, Troy, Cletus ...
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 11 December 2020 15:30 (three years ago) link
MGS is pretty impenetrable, but still amazing. Final Fantasy basically reboots every single entry and just carries certain creatures/magic/lore along but you don't need to play any entry to understand the next.
― Nhex, Friday, 11 December 2020 15:58 (three years ago) link
This is an extremely unoriginal complaint but this is the problem I have with all those Fire Emblem / general anime sword characters. For people unfamiliar with the source games, they're just so much more boring and generic than the more unique characters from games with overtly distinct art styles, and character variety is a very important part of any fighting game. They have to be visually/thematically memorable so that their movement and attacks are justified and differentiated (think Street Fighter). Anime character designs are a very ingrained part of JRPG franchises but they don't make for intriguing fighting game choices despite the fan service of including them into the all-star lineup.
