has there been a single good national TV game so far this year? i guess the bucks-celtics from last week. feels like it's just been a series of dreadful games
― Spottie, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 05:59 (three years ago) link
ratings are a disaster surely
― Clay, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 05:59 (three years ago) link
Wiggins probably the best game I’ve ever seen him play tonight. Has like 15 or 17 in the 4th. Compare that to last week where he looked like completely lost. Gonna be a wild ride having to cheer for this dude.

feels like the pandemic permanently killed sports ratings? dunno when/why they will come back if not now. how's football doing
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 06:18 (three years ago) link
yeah it's weird -- in theory everyone is home and has already watched the queen's gambit so what else is there
people didn't start reading did they

https://www.theringer.com/nba/2020/12/30/22205663/trae-young-atlanta-hawksArticle up at the Ringer today that touches very closely on the debate about exactly who Trae Young should be modeling himself after that spurred this Steph vs CP3 digression.Part of their conclusion is that the path to more team success is in his Harden-esque foul drawing. While it’s hard to mount a compelling disagreement, those are (obv) the least enjoyable parts of Trae’s game to watch. There’s an alley oop montage in that article that closely recalls the early years of lob city and is exciting as hell. The excitement is then canceled out by another one of Trae drawing three shot fouls.

Yeah Trae’s ability to draw fouls is not my favorite part of his game
― Heez, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 16:17 (three years ago) link
no one likes the old free throw line its boring, yet! it is also the best way to get points
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 16:19 (three years ago) link
it's funny because he's really good at that kind of pinball style of taking contact where he bounces dramatically off a player but still has the composure to get a good shot off
― Heez, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 16:25 (three years ago) link
they cld change some rules to make fouls/fts less central maybe add another foul before the bonus and do away with fouling out, 3pt shots only getting 2fts would be nice mostly but it wld incentivize teams to foul in end of game sitches, one foul shot for all the points is good too
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 16:26 (three years ago) link
YES. i hate the pull up midway through a high pick and roll where the defender is still trying to get around the screen. they need to change that
― Heez, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 16:29 (three years ago) link
yeah im not sure what you can do about that one i mean its a foul, its funny that it took this long for guys to figure that play out
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 16:31 (three years ago) link
def pretty cheap tho
i guess just shooting 3s off of screens used to be much less common and mostly defenders went under perimeter picks so the situation just didnt arise that much
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 16:32 (three years ago) link
one of these days the nuggets are going to want to rethink their “let the other team shoot as many threes as they want” strategy
― Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 16:45 (three years ago) link
The nuggets have a Hartenstein problem tho, he’s just been terrible and it’s hard for me to believe that Nnaji is worse

NBA is pleased with opening-week TV ratings. It's the most-watched opening week since 2012 with combined viewership on TNT, ESPN and ABC up 67% vs. last season's opening week. League Pass viewership also up 67% vs. last season's opening week.— Jeff Zillgitt (@JeffZillgitt) December 30, 2020

it's honestly criminal that our idea to ban high fives after free throws has not caught on this year of all years, during a pandemic!
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 30 December 2020 17:52 (three years ago) link
Players build their games around repetition. Take away their hand slaps after free throws and their world will wobble on its axis.

i suspect one contributor to the crazy variance so far is the empty arenas. not getting much press because we're used to it at this point, but feel like it was a very different thing to play without fans in the bubble, which was more like a camp, with everyone in the same place. i wonder if it's messing with players' heads in a different way to be in their home venues with 10-15K empty seats (does anyone know how big the bubble arenas were?).
way too many extraneous factors piled on top of each other this season to ever have any confidence in causality, but another really big one is the discrepancies in offseason rest. teams that didn't go to the bubble just got 9 months off! not a huge surprise they are completing some shocking upsets over teams that were still playing in august
