just want to give a shout-out to universities and other institutions which insist on job applicants filling out a 24-page word document application form with six separate personal statements detailing your qualities in regards to six different aspects of the role, taking about eight hours to fill in properly, then send you a two-sentence form rejection email four weeks later, or maybe not even that.

I got the FBP notice about how FB had updated tehir code to stop teh Revert site from working earlier thsi week. I'm now stuck with what appears to be the mobile version on my desktop.
Can't see any controls to tell me how I change from that to any other view.
Shouldn't be a big deal but this is an annoying set up.
Would be good to be able to access some set of controls over the look at least.

Re ads at start of/in middle of Youtubes, Adblock Plus does stop all of that

Mind, it wont work if you are youtubing on phone app or say, AppleTV/PS4 etc apps.

Having a Boiler Room DJ set stop every 5 minutes for an ad break nearly pushed me to the brink the other day.

Companies who expand wildly beyond their initial purpose. Tesco (supermarket) - hey we're now a mobile phone service provider! And a credit card company! And a bank! Oakley (sunglasses) - buy our rucksacks and shoes! Google (internet search) - play our videogames! (that went well)

Fun fact for you: the name of the world's largest advertising company, WPP, originally stands for "Wire and Plastic Products". (The company used to make shopping baskets.)

i'm at an airbnb with a decorative platter featuring a map of michigan with cutesy illustrations for each town (car for detroit, cherries for traverse city, etc).

there's also a drawing of a city skyline for chicago but it includes none of the buildings most people would associate with the chicago skyline. like why would you not draw the willis tower or hancock building?

I just spent 10 minutes trying to open one of those twist to pop-up soap dispenser tops and actually had to resort to a youtube video for tips. And there were a lot of videos!

I now know the secret, btw, AMA.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 3 February 2021 23:15 (three years ago) link

OMFG I have the same issue with one, I mean dont you usually just rotate the spout and it pops out, so WHY ISNT IT WORKING GAH

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 4 February 2021 02:57 (three years ago) link

The secret is ... there are actually *three* parts! The spout part, the neck that screws/attaches onto the bottle, but then a *third* independent part, a ring between the spout part and the neck. When you twist the spout part, you have to make sure the neck (the bottom part) is totally immobilized, otherwise the ring in the middle rotates, too. At least, that's how it was successfully explained to me on the internet.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 4 February 2021 03:16 (three years ago) link

My entire life is beset with problems like this. I assume it's a punishment (and my innate clumsiness).

the water came back on btw. my insane landlord who lives in the building (and is pushing us to borrow money from family to try to start looking to buy a co-op so maybe it's a good thing) was pacing and screaming on his phone to the plumber in the hallway for hours. what a nutjob.

when two decisions need to be made, the second relies on the first, the second person makes their decision but requires the first person to make theirs, and the first person is unreachable for 8 hours, reading messages, but not replying to them.

he said that you son of a bitch (Neanderthal), Thursday, 4 February 2021 23:49 (three years ago) link

i can't stand being on the phone. i literally hate it. even if i use speakerphone I'm basically enslaved to the room I'm in, all I can think about is "when will this be over?", and then anybody else who is trying to get my attention, I get overwhelmed if I have too much competing stimuli.

literally talking to a friend at work who has a neighbor who is doing loud construction and it's stressing me out trying to hear over it, while someone else is trying to msg me for stuff, and I know I have to make another call right after, and then eat lunch.

I get the benefits of the phone but loooord I've moved beyond it.

he said that you son of a bitch (Neanderthal), Friday, 12 February 2021 16:59 (three years ago) link

I totally get this

for any conversation that is going to last more than a minute or 2 I have to be moving—either walking or driving somewhere. I will return calls when having to run an errand somewhere, I'll start dialing as soon as I get into my car or heading out on foot

John Wesley Glasscock (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 12 February 2021 17:07 (three years ago) link

i just got another request for a call and had to ask "can we please just do this on MS Teams, I've been on the phone for two and a half fucking hours with meetings"

he said that you son of a bitch (Neanderthal), Friday, 12 February 2021 17:10 (three years ago) link

Yeah, calls are stressful. I find it pretty hard to speak naturally on work calls with people I don't know. I feel like all the air has gone out of my lungs, and I can only just stumble through and hope that I don't sound completely bizarre or robotic.

I think it's my normal social anxiety exacerbated by the absence of visual cues.

jmm, Friday, 12 February 2021 17:15 (three years ago) link

I really don’t mind being on the phone, I just feel impatient w/ it if I’m not getting something else done simultaneously

John Wesley Glasscock (Hadrian VIII), Friday, 12 February 2021 17:22 (three years ago) link

I've been working on a google docs file recently and the other night when I opened docs instead of saying "last opened a week ago" or "last opened yesterday" it said "you usually open this file around this time" - FUCK YOU GOOGLE DOCS YOU DON'T KNOW ME.

ledge, Monday, 15 February 2021 09:21 (three years ago) link

I've always hated using the phone. I think it dates back to when I was a teen and there was a craze at school for prank calls: our phone was in the kitchen, so my mother was witness to my humiliation. I'm 50 now and thought of calling eg my father can hang over me for days.

there's a term for Pension called "Qualified Pre-retirement survivor annuity", which is legally abbreviated as QPSA. we just kind of pronounce it "kwip suh" for ease.

one of my colleagues is training and keeps saying it "Kwa spuh" and it's driving me nuts because that doesn't even make sense, the S comes after the P, not before.

I know targeted ads are an age old complaint, but about a month ago we started researching new mattresses and my wife and I were sending each other links and reviews, etc, so of course every app I use gets bombarded with targeted mattress ads. Which, whatever, but I find myself wanting to scream at my phone, "not so smart with the targeting are you? we already picked and bought one".

soaring skrrrtpeggios (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 26 February 2021 15:05 (three years ago) link

I love when you get spammed by the company you just bought a mattress from, as if you might be receptive to buying additional queen sized mattresses for all the other bedrooms in your apartment

scream at my phone, "not so smart with the targeting are you? we already picked and bought one"

I take the opposite view: I find it comforting that they don't already know that I've already bought a blender or whatever. Gives me hope that I stilll have a smidgen of privacy.

The truly evil thing would be if marketeers were fully integrated with your banking transactions, the details of all your purchases, and with all internet-connected IoT devices.

Then the ads would all be like, "Hey madpuffin, how about some accessories for your new Oster Blendomaticizer 3000 in cherry red, which would also nicely coordinate with your 2009 Sunbeam Toastermatic. Also, your toilet told me to tell you that your toothbrush is getting old."
