The banner on the lightpost looks, to me, a lot like the banners you see on college campuses promoting the college?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 30 January 2021 16:54 (three years ago) link

Its a little dusty to be a college banner, I think thats a politician

cherry blossom, Saturday, 30 January 2021 17:01 (three years ago) link

the street lights look like Concorde or some kind of jet plane?

StanM, Saturday, 30 January 2021 17:02 (three years ago) link

I think so too. Not to mention that such banners are more of a North American thing, no?

xp

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 January 2021 17:02 (three years ago) link

the people look too white for it to be Kourou (French Guyana, ESA launch site) imho - nor would I expect to see a Renault or Peugeot in Baikonur

StanM, Saturday, 30 January 2021 17:03 (three years ago) link

I've seen those kinds of banners in Europe.

Not that I know where this is. The number of people walking around points me toward Europe rather than North America though.

The college ones? A political ad seems way likelier imo.

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 January 2021 17:20 (three years ago) link

yes at the newly dumbly named Université de Paris for example

All cars are bad (Euler), Saturday, 30 January 2021 17:21 (three years ago) link

though I agree that these are not likely college banners

All cars are bad (Euler), Saturday, 30 January 2021 17:21 (three years ago) link

Fair enough. I guess this photo doesn't strike me as very campus-y, although it's not impossible.

Also, are we certain that those suspended wires indicate the presence of a trolleybus system?

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 January 2021 17:23 (three years ago) link

Why is politician partly whited out and is he holding some kind of torch?

cherry blossom, Saturday, 30 January 2021 17:27 (three years ago) link

It def can’t be North America, hardly any trolleybuses here, and it def gives an eastern Central Europe post soviet vibe. Somewhere in Romania?

Boring United Methodist Church (Boring, Maryland), Saturday, 30 January 2021 19:23 (three years ago) link

Sizable trolley bus network in Seattle but it’s not Seattle

Canon in Deez (silby), Saturday, 30 January 2021 19:27 (three years ago) link

Seems a bit too clean to be Romania but I might be wrong. We've still got trolleybuses in some cities, that much is true.

also not sold on this trolley idea fwiw

The parallel cables do point towards it, I suppose.

I'm intrigued by the sign next to the red gate, looks like it's representing a church or something like that. Like it's telling us "this hasn't always been a shithole, there used to be a beautiful church around here"

Could be Russia too. Or Belarus.

квитки, eh? That helps, but ticket booths are a dime a dozen in trolleybus land.

I mean:

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 January 2021 21:27 (three years ago) link

I'd found very similar streetlights in Kiev before but not quite the same. The blue/yellow in the mural was starting to make me ditch Russia (even though it turned out to be a red herring). I dropped on a couple of others, then saw the streetlights again in Lviv but when I went to other streets they changed back to standard so I figured they might be unique to where I'd dropped onto, moved along a minute or so and came across it

Didn't look at the trolley thing at all xp, wasn't convinced by that

cherry blossom, Saturday, 30 January 2021 21:31 (three years ago) link

Well played, as always.

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 January 2021 21:34 (three years ago) link

I was still trying to work out why it seemed to say квитк instead of квиток for “ticket”, but forgot to check for the plural, which is indeed квитки, with the last letter not visible here - and then it would have been on to the over 40 UKR cities that currently have trolleybus systems... but knew others would get there much faster. well done!

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Saturday, 30 January 2021 21:39 (three years ago) link

I now have a very clear picture in my head of the blue and yellow guy in my imagination of the mural. That is completely different from the guy in the actual mural.

He is a Ukrainian national mascot with a yellow football for a head. I can picture him clear as day, but it is becoming clear that it most likely doesn't exist

cherry blossom, Saturday, 30 January 2021 21:42 (three years ago) link

Was wrong about the banner being a politician, looks like it is a university banner

cherry blossom, Saturday, 30 January 2021 21:49 (three years ago) link

Hah, and I was even wronger.

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 January 2021 21:52 (three years ago) link

Lviv it is— the Lviv-1 Stryiskyi Bus Station, which is nowhere near the center of the city, and instead is set way back in the midst of Soviet apartment blocks many kilometers from the town center.

The last I was there, in 2005, there were packs of wild dogs running around, goats wandering that median, and we had to take the scariest jitney ride I've ever been on to get to the town center.

Certainly my most memorable travel experience.

The return of our beloved potatoes (the table is the table), Saturday, 30 January 2021 21:52 (three years ago) link

We'd also taken an all-night train ride from Kraków to Przemyśl, then a bus-ride from there through the western Ukrainian countryside immediately beforehand, so were haunted by delirium, vodka, and statues of Stalin still proudly surrounded by roses in small town squares.

this is the mascot of local football team FC Karpaty Lviv, looks kinda similar (I’d say the one in the photo is lion-like as well) but their shirt colour is emphatically green, so seems unlikely. if someone could only decipher the cyrillic graffiti...

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Saturday, 30 January 2021 21:59 (three years ago) link

I was pretty convinced it was Russia, possibly eastern Ukraine but discounted Lviv altogether at first. Those weird streetlights don't seem common. Definitely mostly luck on that one

In Romanian, we call stray dogs 'maidanezi'. Same root as the Ukrainian майдан (public square) of Euromaidan fame.
