Somewhere warm, somewhere (it seems to me) left hand driving, so former British colony?

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 10 February 2021 00:17 (three years ago) link

These are very good questions, ZZ, and there is an interesting answer which would be too much of a clue at this stage.

Convinced myself that it's India but there's really not a lot to go on. Feel like identifying the spongebob-like cartoon on the mural is key

or something, Wednesday, 10 February 2021 00:35 (three years ago) link

Driving on the left + scrubbiness of vegetation consistent with Anglophone Caribbean.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 10 February 2021 00:40 (three years ago) link

From the comment that there's an interesting answer to my questions that would give too much away, I surmise that this isn't exactly a former British colony, but perhaps once occupied by the British or maybe is still a British overseas territory. For a moment I got excited about Israel, as they seem to have red and white curbs, but sadly they drive on the right. However, Cyprus drives on the left, could it be Nicosia?

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 10 February 2021 01:50 (three years ago) link

The far right tbh

scampsite (darraghmac), Wednesday, 10 February 2021 02:08 (three years ago) link

Feel like we can be a little quick with the clues. Clues were popping out for Sharjah before I'd even seen the pic! (not that I was anywhere close to getting it)

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 10 February 2021 03:56 (three years ago) link

Clues from the poster of the pic I mean, not from guessers!

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 10 February 2021 03:57 (three years ago) link

I'm leaning somewhere in Cyprus for now, but the road signs don't quite feel right for there

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 10 February 2021 04:54 (three years ago) link

Googling black and white curbs, I come up with Singapore and Malaysia. Could this be Malaysia? Drives on the left and has "interesting" (to say the least) former relations with Britain. Not quite tidy enough looking to be Singapore, I feel

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 10 February 2021 05:31 (three years ago) link

Is it like a big roundabout thing? Whats in the middle? like a raised angled plaque.

I'm stuck on this being Limassol but can't quite make it work

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 10 February 2021 13:30 (three years ago) link

Not Limassol or Nicosia.

Bastard Lakes (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 10 February 2021 13:38 (three years ago) link

Or any other city in Cyprus

Bastard Lakes (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 10 February 2021 13:39 (three years ago) link

I'll do a reverse view in a few hours.

Bastard Lakes (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 10 February 2021 13:48 (three years ago) link

It definitely feels Caribbean to me but doesn’t remind me of anywhere I know. If the cars are on the left, perhaps Charlotte Amalie in the USVI. If they’re on the right, Belize City?

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Wednesday, 10 February 2021 13:49 (three years ago) link

Georgetown, Guyana?

nickn, Wednesday, 10 February 2021 17:44 (three years ago) link

I was going to do a reverse view but can't find the exact spot, so here is just another view of the city, think this should be a bit more helpful.

Yes, well done! How did you work it out?

Bastard Lakes (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 10 February 2021 19:14 (three years ago) link

I tried for 5 mins to find the original location but I cannot find it. I believe it's somewhere around the roundabout near Christuskirche but I don't have the time today for further goofing off.

The 2nd pic was way more telling. I could make out Alexander F____ House which suggested it was an English speaking country. The palm trees made me believe it was equatorial or southern hemisphere and definitely a coastal city.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 10 February 2021 19:24 (three years ago) link

...except for the coastal bit :)

anatol_merklich, Wednesday, 10 February 2021 19:26 (three years ago) link

Second pic definitely required, that first one was a real needle in a haystack

or something, Wednesday, 10 February 2021 19:35 (three years ago) link

Sorry "coastal" may not have been the best descriptor but when looking at maps of continents, Windhoek seems coastal from that perspective.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Wednesday, 10 February 2021 19:45 (three years ago) link

It's in Limassol. Or, at least its twin is. I was sure I found the building in the distance, the kerb markings, almost everything, in Limassol. Definitely wide of the mark once again

Monterey, California?

definitely reminds me of Israel

All cars are bad (Euler), Thursday, 11 February 2021 10:58 (three years ago) link

also like the hills above Palo Alto, looking toward the Pacific, but the colors and tbh the fences look more like the eastern edges of Jerusalem

All cars are bad (Euler), Thursday, 11 February 2021 10:59 (three years ago) link

That's a race track no? Hence my guess. A few minutes googling famous racetracks (or raceways as I found they're called in the US) took me to Laguna Seca outside Monterey. This looks a lot like it, even down to the blue and white strip along the track

Looks close to the spot

correct, the corkscrew at Laguna Seca! Apologies if that was too easy.

I have vomited at the apex of that climb three times in an hour long event.

Laguna Seca

Is this actually in a city?

Waterloo Subset (Tom D.), Thursday, 11 February 2021 18:43 (three years ago) link

I checked with your mom and she said that yes it is.

Yes Tom Dombadilly, Laguna Seca is in Monterey, CA, USA.

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Friday, 12 February 2021 19:41 (three years ago) link

the sign says "BOUISI" so somewhere that was formerly part of french indochina. it just seems like that region to me.

Surabaya

cherry blossom, Friday, 12 February 2021 20:41 (three years ago) link

I figured it was Indonesia but no real clue where, dropped in Surabaya and saw similar roofs straightaway, but finding the actual building was tougher

cherry blossom, Friday, 12 February 2021 20:45 (three years ago) link

Correct!
