I don't think Stanford Stadium is that dumpy, although I don't think I've ever walked next to the stadium.

It looks more like Brazil to me, but I have no feeling for where (I have traveled rather little there).

Not Stanford (only one BMW amid subcompact economy hatchbacks). Looks more tropical.

What an interesting thing on the left. Looks like a pavilion of some sort, reminds me of Venice Biennale (but isn't that)

those might be the humanities professors' cars

Whats the tall thing to the left of the two trees on the left? Sort of looks like a floodlight?

cherry blossom, Thursday, 18 February 2021 17:49 (three years ago) link

Ah, looks like thats already covered

cherry blossom, Thursday, 18 February 2021 17:52 (three years ago) link

Do stadiums in the US have seating go right up like that? Cars don't feel right for US, South America feels a better bet

cherry blossom, Thursday, 18 February 2021 17:55 (three years ago) link

small colleges sometimes have stadiums like that

treeship., Thursday, 18 February 2021 17:57 (three years ago) link

Yeah that totally looks like a US college football stadium to me

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 18 February 2021 17:58 (three years ago) link

It's hard to shake the idea it's California, but it's also p modest looking for a US campus venue for nearly any sport. Plus I'm struggling to think of an English word ending in -cial that would make sense as the last word of the name of that building on the left, whereas in, say, Spanish "ciencia social" would be logical

rob, Thursday, 18 February 2021 18:02 (three years ago) link

yeah I suppose a small liberal arts college could have a dinky entrance like that

rob, Thursday, 18 February 2021 18:02 (three years ago) link

btw "brutalist football stadium" is kind of a fun gis

rob, Thursday, 18 February 2021 18:06 (three years ago) link

I thought i had this for a second in Rio.

Its not Rio

cherry blossom, Thursday, 18 February 2021 18:07 (three years ago) link

Flamengo made sense for a moment but no

cherry blossom, Thursday, 18 February 2021 18:12 (three years ago) link

Next guess was Curitiba but absolutely no on that one

Thuogh blurred, I can tell the license plates shapes/colors are definitely not USA.

impressive as always. is there an easy level for this thread where CB is barred from playing? :)

rob, Thursday, 18 February 2021 18:21 (three years ago) link

I knew you were going to get it when you said Rio. xp

Rosario’s very nice.

small cars, stadium, red and black, it narrowed down pretty quick

Central Asian feel about the gold guys on the left. Lego building interesting, holding something pretty tall but not that long. Looks almost like a military fair to show off rockets is being set up

with all due respect to the many good players in this thread, i would like to read an extensive interview with cherry blossom about their approach to the Guess the City game

― alpine static,

Still want that interview?

I got lucky, 'large bronze statues in africa' led nowhere but i thought maybe the low building was an airport - it isn't, but 'large bronze statues outside airport in africa' still delivered. built by north korea! https://theculturetrip.com/africa/articles/spectacular-african-monuments-built-by-north-korea/

ledge, Friday, 19 February 2021 15:42 (three years ago) link

Is that building just an apartment block with a cafe in it?

cherry blossom, Friday, 19 February 2021 15:45 (three years ago) link

report of another failed attempt:

the small building with the thatched roof on the left suggested Africa to me, but I just couldn’t bring up that white cube building through Google. (it still doesn’t come up when you add Botswana - weird, you’d think it was pretty distinctive). saw the statues, but it seemed too vague a clue.

thanx for reading and commiserating

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Friday, 19 February 2021 16:46 (three years ago) link

Yes that thatched roof building was a red flag for central asia (though it could have been the Botswana stand at the military fair in Uzbekistan)

Those look like river cruise boats rather than ocean boats. Guessing Turkey or elsewhere in Central Asia.

All cars are bad (Euler), Monday, 22 February 2021 15:00 (three years ago) link

Yep, one of the Russian cruise ports like Rostov-na-Donu would make sense.

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Monday, 22 February 2021 16:00 (three years ago) link

I actually think it looks like somewhere on the US west coast, Vancouver even, but I'm definitely wrong.

The people look Russian.

I'm Going to Bring a Watermelon to Mark Grout Tonight (Tom D.), Monday, 22 February 2021 17:39 (three years ago) link

Got me thinking Black or Caspian Seas. How about Sochi?

or something, Monday, 22 February 2021 18:02 (three years ago) link

I guess I don't think they look Russian only because I'm clocking the two people in the bottom right as queer, and quite visibly so imho.

(Not that there aren't queer people in Russia, obv, but just because the look is a little too on the nose queer)

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Monday, 22 February 2021 18:15 (three years ago) link

Who knows! But I did take one look at the photo and think they were Russian and then noticed two posts below that someone mentioned Russian cruise ports ... still might be bullshit of course!

I'm Going to Bring a Watermelon to Mark Grout Tonight (Tom D.), Monday, 22 February 2021 18:33 (three years ago) link

Definitely a river port because that boat is unable to handle open water swells.

Guessing the Volga for obvious reasons.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 22 February 2021 18:42 (three years ago) link

Good one. I guess there's a certain "Russian fashion is unintentionally gay" thing that goes on.
