and no real explanation for why they thought the space rover could go through the hex without it and rambeau turning into something else, no explanation for why the rover couldn't in the end go through but rambeau could, no explanation for why rambeau's clothes and mind don't change when she goes through

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 20 February 2021 03:37 (three years ago) link

just generally.... not as crispy put together as every other episode up to this point

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 20 February 2021 03:38 (three years ago) link

Rambeau could because she had already been rewritten on a molecular level twice and parts of her got in once again when the rover attempted to breach it. she was the only one who'd been in there twice, so the "change" probably didn't happen because she's now got superpowers (which were completed when she went through the third time, hence the blue eyes). the transformations don't 'work' on her anymore.

Monica panicked and said the Hex was being "rewritten" (or something like that) when someone else optimistically said it was degrading. and stuff kept going haywire inside the hex, especially inside Wanda's house, all episode. the Hex is a very different thing now that she expanded the territory by 8 miles, unstable, not operating the same as it has previously.

awfully precise there, hayward

Monica panicked and said the Hex was being "rewritten"

Oh maybe I misunderstood the line, I thought they were saying the rover was being torn apart and Rambeau was saying no it (the rover) is being rewritten (i.e. turned into a station wagon)

Guayaquil (eephus!), Saturday, 20 February 2021 03:56 (three years ago) link

I could see that making sense too. I didn't really worry myself too much about the 'how' behind things, but i definitely assumed Monica got in because now she's kind of a mutant or someone with superpowers. I think the fact that she requested such a hefty rover suggested that they thought it might be difficult to get it through (even though previously they'd gotten things like drones and well, Monica through). probably also to protect against any Wanda attacks, but they seemed prepared for resistance.

btw I can't get that Agatha theme song out of my head

if you meh them, shut up (Neanderthal), Saturday, 20 February 2021 04:00 (three years ago) link

the other wrinkle is they're no longer broadcasting a signal outside the hex, so even though they were ostensibly shooting a show inside it (a Modern Family knockoff), maybe the fact that there was no signal meant that you didnt' just get 'recast' as soon as you entered it.

ah well. back to Babylon 5!

if you meh them, shut up (Neanderthal), Saturday, 20 February 2021 04:01 (three years ago) link

I interpreted the 2001/fourth wall-shattering scene as Monica holding onto her personality and memories, fighting the Hex trying to shift her back into the sitcom personalities. that's why we hear all the audio from Captain Marvel, as we did when she was blipped back into existence

Yeah, fair enough, I called this wrong and was a dick about it, sorry. I had too much faith in the show creators. I did a few times consider (and I'm aware there is absolutely no compulsion for anyone to believe me on this) saying "The one thing they could do is end of Episode 7: hahaha it was me all along - Episode 8: flashback to WTF 'me' is - Episode 9: climax" - but I didn't because I just thought it would be a weird and non-MCU thing to do.

Andrew Farrell, Saturday, 20 February 2021 09:43 (three years ago) link

I think there's also a thing where the nature of sitcoms is that they're a retreat from reality and to an extent* modernity - you don't get military installations in there for theme rather than era reasons. If she'd gone through in a station wagon, she might be fine :)

On a purely technical thing, Modern Family's last episode was last year, but it's now 2023 in the MCU - maybe a less cutting-edge rover might work.

Lost opportunities: Wanda Maximoff, Wanda Maximoff

Darcy's "the love the two of you share is real" exactly the kind of corny line that the lower-tier mcu movies are larded with, delivered straight

I mean, it's a romance? The Vision didn't exactly go "Yeah, you're right, now I feel at ease about it all"

When i was a kid Agatha was not evil iirc ... dangerous, but an ally. Did she become more of an outright villain in the comics during the 90s and later?

In any case, I’m glad it’s her, great character

So for reference here are the acknowledged character creators chronologically (have fun sic!):

Jimmy Woo - Al Feldstein, Joe Maneely (1956)
Scarlet Witch - Jack Kirby, Stan Lee (1964)
Quicksilver - Jack Kirby, Stan Lee (1964)
Vision - Roy Thomas, John Buscema (1968)
Agatha Harkness - Jack Kirby, Stan Lee (1970)
Monica Rambeau / Captain Marvel 2 / Photon / Pulsar / Spectrum - Roger Stern, John Romita Jr (1982)
Tommy and Billy - Steve Englehart, Richard Howell (1986)
S.W.O.R.D. - Joss Whedon, John Cassady (2004)
Darcy Lewis - J Michael Straczynski for the first Thor film (2011)

When i was a kid Agatha was not evil iirc ... dangerous, but an ally. Did she become more of an outright villain in the comics during the 90s and later?
AFAIK she's been dead in the comics for years now, but before that she never became a villain, no. She was always Wanda's friend and mentor in matters of witchcraft.

Given that fact, and since there's two more episodes left, I'm pretty sure there'll be further revelations about what's going on here, and she might be working with or for some other villain. I mean, if they're really gonna do the Mephisto reveal (which I'm still hoping they won't), it's almost certain that it's gonna be Pietro. This episode's post-credits scene made it clear she's in cahoots with Agnes, and in the Halloween episode his weird hairdo (which most people thought was just a gag on his comic book hairstyle) did look like he had horns...

Anyway, whether Agnes/Agatha is working with someone else or by herself, she seemed to be yet again very interested in Billy and Tommy. Like I said upthread, I'm pretty sure the whole point of the simulation was to make Wanda and Vision have kids, and have them age faster so they'll manifest powers, and then Agnes (and her possible ally/boss Pietro) can take them away for whatever purpose she/they had in mind. I guess in the next episode Agnes is gonna crack a joke about witches eating children.

Tuomas, Saturday, 20 February 2021 21:18 (three years ago) link

Tommy and Billy - Steve Englehart, Richard Howell (1986)
Yes, Billy and Tommy were shown to be born in The Vision and the Scarlet Witch miniseries in 1986 by Englehart and Howell. But in that one, and in Englehart's West Coast Avengers run they weren't really proper characters, since they were, you know, just babies. And then John Byrne erased them. The versions of Tommy and Billy we see here, i.e. ones who have grown up to have superpowers and actual personalities, were really only created in 2005 by Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung for Young Avengers.

Tuomas, Saturday, 20 February 2021 21:28 (three years ago) link

So did Agatha create the kids? Create the dog? Create Pietro? Heck, create and expand the hex? Is this something in line with her powers in the comics?

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 20 February 2021 21:47 (three years ago) link

Kinda like how Groot first appeared in a 1960 horror comic by Jack Kirby, but the version of him that everyone loves (who's only similarity to horror version is being a sentient tree alien) was only introduced in the Annihilation: Conquest crossover in 2007 by Keith Giffen, who wanted to repurpose some obscure Marvel space aliens for his Star-Lord miniseries.

No, I think the kids are real, Wanda and Vision really had them with the help of the simulation's magic. And the simulation was created for the exact purpose of providing an environment where the kids could be born and grow up. I don't think Agatha created Pietro either; any insight Pietro gained into the family could've easily been obtained by Agnes herself, so I don't think it makes sense for her to create him, especially since his presence only made Wanda more unstable.

Pietro too seems to pretty interested in the kids and their powers, so he seems to be working with Agatha, but who he really is (Mephisto, Pietro from the X-Men universe, or someone else) remains to be seen.

The expansion of the hex I think was Wanda's doing. Even if Agatha did create it (which we still don't know for sure she did), Wanda certainly had a fair bit of control over it.

In the comics, Agatha is a witch, and her power levels kinda vary between different stories, because magical powers in Marvel are typically not well defined. But I don't think she's ever shown to have reality-bending powers of this magnitude - Wanda is clearly the more powerful of the two, Agatha is just way older and more experienced.

they're not really proper characters here yet either!

Oh, and in the comics Wanda's magical powers are explained by her being a "nexus being" - a sort of a personification of the magic of the universe, of which there are only one in each parallel universe. That's why she's powerful enough to reality-warp the entire Earth, like she did in The House of M. This episode's fake ad with the "Nexus" brand antidepressant was clearly a nod to all that.

Well, they have speaking roles, they're shown to have personalities, which are also different from each other. Obviously they're not (yet) as well defined as Wiccan and Speed in the comics, but they're clearly supposed to be them. Englehart only created two generic babies.

Tuomas, Saturday, 20 February 2021 22:19 (three years ago) link

First comics appearance of Agatha I remember is as Franklin Richards' babysitter, and she was good at that point, if fearsome.

the body of a spider... (scampering alpaca), Monday, 22 February 2021 13:30 (three years ago) link

Biggest questions that remain for me right now:

Are the kids real, and where did they come from?
How was Vision brought back to life (with independent agency), and how/why did Wanda steal his body (assuming she actually did)?
What is Agatha's goal? Is there any chance she is *not* the baddie at all, not even a secondary baddie, and this is an exercise in tough love to spark new Wanda powers into existence? (Which would be more in line with her comic book version)?

if we assume that the show's meta-asides are to be taken as messages from a reliable narrator (as they have so far wrt theme lyrics, visual asides suggesting not all is as it seems), Agatha is described in the song as insidious, perfidious and "messing up everything." She also admits to killing a dog with Wicked Witch of the West flair which is a cancelable offense these days so i figure her as a straight-up baddie, potentially in league with larger baddies tbd but likely already mentioned in this thread.

Worth noting (or not, who even knows anymore) that, in the comics, Sparky is not a real live organic dog but rather a synthezoid dog created by Vision.

We don't even know what's "real"/permanent in this world yet, so maybe the dog was, yeah, not real. I guess we'll see soon enough if she's a baddie or what kind of baddie she is. I only know Hahn as a comedic actor. Does she have compelling drama chops, too, that would make her a convincing villain? That's sort of another reason I think she may not be a villain, she seems like a good character to want/have around.

In this world, safe to assume Dr. Strange knows about this ongoing magical anomaly, right? What is his relationship with Agatha in the comics? Peers? Rivals?

For that matter, why is everything being directed like a TV show, or different eras of TV shows, at all? And why was it glitching last episode?
