The Myth of British Monarchy, excuse my memory
― A bot scamping on a human face, forever (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 10 March 2021 16:02 (three years ago) link
Just butting in to say I dislike the trope of Britain as a 'tiny island' - it plays into the 'plucky underdogs who conquered the world' myth. GB is the ninth largest island in the world, with a comfortably above average sized population - 3rd in Western Europe, 21st globally. Not a behemoth like the US, but hardly tiny.
Anyway, I suspect/hope the monarchy will be abolished within my lifetime (maybe only just).

Population growth seems rapidly on the up in the UK despite the best efforts of the govt to let the rona loose on it, it's currently 68,214,888 on countrymeters. I could have sworn it wasn't that long ago it still around 65-66 million.

Many of the most progressive and egalitarian nations are constitutional monarchies like the UK, some of which share the same royal family. I have a hard time believing they are an impediment to anything except vague symbolism.

The time for William to take over looks less and less likely the longer time goes on and the shine continues to come off that couple, imo
If Charles lives as long as his mother and grandmother then William will be in his 60s when he comes to the throne. I don't think he'll be looking too shiny by then.

Think we should look abroad for some fresh perspective - give the job to King Tupou VI of Tonga til the end of the season, see if he can win back the dressing room.
― Piedie Gimbel, Thursday, 11 March 2021 12:10 (three years ago) link
I'm not suggesting there's any perfect countries without a monarchy, I just take exception to the idea that monarchy isn't an impediment to progress - it frequently is, as per my Spanish example, and it contributes nothing towards the progress that is achieved in countries that are monarchies. To handwave it away as vague symbolism when, at the very least, it's a drain on resources that could be going to society, is pretty galling.
― Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 11 March 2021 12:11 (three years ago) link
the expensive freakshow part of a constitutional monarchy - that is only really window dressing, nothing to see, good for tourism etc.. that get gifted a £500m grant when some of their ornate light fittings start looking a bit rusty. That isn't vague symbolism, it's an unnecessary drain on the state.

My sister has dual citizenship, but can still be kind of snobby about the ways she perceives the British as being totally different from and superior to Americans. A few weeks back we were talking about "The Crown," and I think I asked her if anyone watched it there, since everyone seemed to be watching it here. And she kind of dismissively said, oh, no one cares about or supports the monarchy here. And her husband, who is full-British, turned to her and basically said, what are you talking about?
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 11 March 2021 16:44 (three years ago) link
it's a weird thing, brits make fun of foreigners for caring about all this shit we supposedly don't care about. there's a lot of projection going on, people care deeply and (rightly) feel embarrassed about it so will selectively pretend otherwise
― nothing (Left), Thursday, 11 March 2021 16:50 (three years ago) link
of course empire is the world's biggest elephant in the room here. which is why people who love the monarchy and people who claim to not care are both unwilling to question it in a serious way

Exactly, I don't believe there is a causal relation between a nation ability to make social progress and monarchy, either positive or negative. I live in a monarchy myself, I really don't think getting rid of the Queen will solve the housing crisis.

When QE2 dies, the princelings who sprang from Charles' loins should draw lots to see who seizes the throne and beheads him. This would be the most satisfactory available process of royal succession.
