Neuromantic by Yukihiro Takahashi might be right up your alley

I think some Sadistic Mika Band stuff also fits into this kind of 'new wave before new wave' category

produced by bill nelson

I feel like Nelson is kind of the king of this stuff that straddles glam, 'theatrical' art-rock, prog and new-wave, particularly the last Be-Bop Deluxe album and his first few solo records

Yes, Sound-On-Sound by Bill Nelson's Red Noise, although that is getting closer to Devo than glam.

Some great posts already. I'm familiar with a few suggestions like Magazine, Bill Nelson, Fashion and The Associates already but am very excited and interested to hear the rest

Writz/Famous Names were a kind of UK version of the Tubes, two of them left to form a synth-pop duo called Techno Twins

Doctors of Madness/Richard Strange maybe?

don't know if you know the band Metro, they made three albums of glam-ish new wave in the late 70s of middling quality, but i quite like the new romantic stuff that their singer Peter Godwin went on to do in the early 80s:

Blogged about these guys in '04; I wouldn't write it just like this now, but adjust your shades for the phrasing and it still seems accurate enough:

...The Homosexuals(pre-[In Exile]original version, the one on newly assembled THE HOMOSEXUALS RECORD and ASTRAL GLAMOUR) are being hyped as more of ye "post-punk pioneers." True, they did seize the right moment to move past punkthrodoxy (which early tracks prove they so bad at). But not to slide those ol' enosizers out of the closet for dance class, like Go4, Joy D., etc. No, the 'mos just let it rip and trip, into twin barrels of four-eyed Nerd Power, much less anal than Elvis Costello's or Devo's. Foreskinners of current shatter-trope spewcore, of which Mars Volta might be one of the more conservative examples.(Homosex of recs are more like Freedie and the Dreamers x vulcanized lick and proto-jangle enhanced by digital x Wire-asides x Mars V. x Fountains of Wayne? As high as I can find things to count on right now.) Spirit of punkadelica outside the laws of style and cool, and kind good, once they get a no-handle on it. But after all come to think of it including poptones, ground and oops into the goo-goo, so I guess Lydon *might* or o course certainly should have approved this ,however reluctantly, and thus it's "post-punk" after all. Well that's a relief isn't it? The current Homosexuals, sic'd [In Exile], include only one orig. member, but he was and is the very frontman, I'm reliably informed. Homosexuals [In Exile]:7/23 with Suicide (historically and histrionically perfect!) and The Flesh, at Knitting Factory; 7/24 in Brooklyn, bill and venue TBA.

Oh man, I had forgotten all about "Angel Face." It's on an RCA Records "Blitz" sampler along with Bow Wow Wow, Polyrock, and Sparks that I loved back in 1981. Now that I have seen that video I cannot unsee it.

some sorta relevant threads that get into this vibe:

Smart art-glam suggestions?

a thread for great bands (and artists) that just didn't...quite...fit.

Punishment of Luxury are great, big fan of their first album.
Some good suggestions in those previous threads

I've always heard Metal Boys featuring China as being somewhat glam-inspired, via Pop Art-VU-Roxy-Reed-Bowie-early 70s-solo-Eno, Sadistic Mika Band etc---when ilxor Dan Selzer co-produced this comp for Acute in /04, I wrote about it in the Voice:
"The rain won't let my tits grow. Napalm you're so
good in bed. How many flies ate you today? Let's get hungry tonight." That's
China whinin', like a siren, on "Suspenders in the Dark." She sings for Metal
Boys (recombinant shards of Parisian punk pioneers Metal Urbain) on 1980's
Tokio
Airport. Now unearthed, and still flying together/apart on every track, Metal
Boys' sexelectric dragon's teeth gnaw and gnash at China's objet
d'amour-hate, "Tokio Airport." "Technofasceest," she hisses, and drives desperate, new
unforgivable-synth stinky toys through "the anti-climax of X-mas Day," leaving
them stuck inside a harmonically ravenous mobile tagged "Carbone 14." Later, in
penance and/or celebration, China dances barefoot for a "Paranoia Carnival," on
tone-nails of gilded Pong. (That's un certain game, kiddies. I hear it's coming
b-a-a-ack.)

I'm guessing that you probably know the first couple of XTC records, but it's worth mentioning.

Also, the wonderful Nits from the Netherlands, almost totally ignored outside of the Benelux, still going, still fantastic but in the late 70s/early 80s they had a three-album dalliance with New Wave/Power Pop and a touch of glam maybe.

Which albums from The Nits are best from that time? Had a listen to Omsk a while back but it has yet to grow on me.

ClimbingThieves, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 22:15 (three years ago) link

Try Tent, New Flat and Work, Omsk is decent but it's kinda different to the earlier material.

Adding to my own thread haha but Peter Ivers is great - particularly his album Terminal Love. Not exactly new wave but some underrated, yet artsy glam rock.

ClimbingThieves, Wednesday, 7 April 2021 22:18 (three years ago) link

Thank you for the suggestions, Maren. Really interested in hearing more from the Nits, an intriguing group from what I've heard.

I could blab on about them forever, it's a real shame they're so slept on.

The music did take a few years to click with me, but now I'm a huge admirer.

two covers of Alabama Song that both have a kind of glam meets new-wave sound imo

one month passes...

only saw this thread because I was searching my name (of course) and saw the Metal Boys comment. Glad to see my very old "smart art glam" thread linked too, as it's definitely a relative of this thread.
