After being educated in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, he joined the British Royal Navy in 1939, aged 18. From July 1939, he began corresponding with the then thirteen-year-old Princess Elizabeth, whom he had first met in 1934.

least weird thing i've heard about this fellow

PM Boris Johnson has cancelled plans to drink a pint on Monday 12 April, as pub gardens are allowed to re-open, following the death of Prince Philip.

What kind of a terrible person do you have to be for even Boris to refuse to raise a glass in your memory?

Checking my Facebook page, literally one person has posted about this, an Australian woman I work with. And no-one has replied to her yet or liked her post.

lol bbc4 have decided to pay tribute by showing absolutely nothing this evening , i was gonna tape the england game, but apparently watching football or old totp would be too disrespectful a choice to be given to license payers.

What does the royal family do for a living and why do n-words care about them? I want to care about mediocre white folks with teeth like xvxvx if it's fun. It looks fun. But I need directions.

Civil servants and Ministers involved in ceremonial or other public facing events associated with the demise should wear appropriate mourning dress. This includes: dark coat, suit, or day dress; a dark hat and gloves are optional if appropriate for the weather; or dark lounge suit with black tie; dark overcoat if appropriate for the weather.

Don’t they have approximately 26455374 documentaries on the Royal Family to fall back upon at times like these?

Departments communicating directly with the Royal Household should use black-edged stationery during the period of National Mourning on matters relating to demise. All other Government communications should be conducted in the usual format.

Sad that my bougie flats fb feed* has stopped shagging the royals once another woman and myself talked about how great his racism and teaching his kid to be a kiddie fiddler is. Where is the patriotism?

ffs I was just enjoying some Beethoven on R3 and then was hit with: "I wonder how many composers Prince Phillip met in his lifetime". Couldn't care less if he had a threesome with Winifred Wagner and Richard Strauss.

calzino, Friday, 9 April 2021 21:20 (three years ago) link

This is the best take.

The fun thing about the Duke of Edinburgh was the fact that he came from the great tribe of the Perhapsburgs, Europe's peripatetic aristocracy: always hunting down a throne, marrying it's own money, declaring eternal loyalty to whichever perch on which it can feather a nest>

BBC Four was going to show an England Women’s international football match tonight, but has instead cancelled all programming. The BBC will however still show the match but it’ll be hidden away as online iplayer stream and not on a traditional channel as a... show of respect?

Just want to let all british ilxors know that when it comes to hating the royal family, we Americans may be amateurs, but it is still a part of our birthright, just as it is a part of yours. Cheering you on to the day when "this sceptred isle" loses its scepter holders for good.

oscar bravo, Saturday, 10 April 2021 07:30 (three years ago) link

it wasn't just that he was an old bigot, it was that he weaponised racist slurs in an attempt to seem relatable and friendly, and it shows so much contempt for "common" people that he thought the best way to appear personable and likeable was to talk like this to them. It hurts my head to think about how many vile comments he made that didn't come out, and yet he continued to live a life of luxury to the age of 99. Meanwhile 127,000 people (mostly from structurally disadvantaged sections of society) have died in the past year due the pandemic, with 1000 deaths in a day becoming background noise, and this bastard is going to get eight days of official mourning. It's sickening.

That's fightin' talk. Anyway some cast list in Dr. Terror's House of Horrors: Donald Sutherland, Alan 'Fluff' Freeman, Roy Castle, Kenny Lynch, Tubby Hayes(!)

Duncan Disorderly (Tom D.), Saturday, 10 April 2021 09:30 (three years ago) link

Tubby Hayes was a man of many talents.. but I didn't know he did acting as well.

calzino, Saturday, 10 April 2021 09:54 (three years ago) link

He didn't actually have any lines, he just had to blow some sax (and flute!) and pal about with Roy Castle a bit. It's a bit like Graham Bond showing up in "That'll Be the Day", a nice bit of casting!
