just an inkling, South Africa?

(but seriously, how does one identify a street like that, somewhere on this globe?)

That "Fitness Centar" spelling seems to be typical of the Balkans.

Surely they meant 'Fitness Centaur', which is a legit great name for a gym.

Australia maybe, breastcrawl otm tho

Not Perth.

Darwin looks too tropical and abundantly vegetated so I'll guess one more Australian city and then abandon that country altogether- Adelaide?

No.

hmm a three phase star power distribution system on thin wooden poles ... just trying to sound clever because I don't know what the fuck else to say and am stumped!

can't make out the lettering on the back of that spare tyre on the vehicle because of the gate.

calzino, Friday, 9 April 2021 22:05 (three years ago) link

Somewhere that people with big houses feel the need to have big spiked gates outside.

That’s a big sky, so somewhere at altitude?

Madchen, Saturday, 10 April 2021 07:13 (three years ago) link

This feels like South Africa to me also, but not got much more than that right now

cherry blossom, Saturday, 10 April 2021 08:34 (three years ago) link

I think this is Cape Town

cherry blossom, Saturday, 10 April 2021 08:59 (three years ago) link

Maybe somewhere in the Kenwyn suburb

cherry blossom, Saturday, 10 April 2021 09:02 (three years ago) link

Was just gonna post another pic but you got it! Everywhere I dropped a pin was ruler straight roads and bungaloids so I thought someone might recognise it.

I like how breastcrawl guessed the country then said how impossible it was to guess.

Computers I can live with, I even dried them in the oven (ledge), Saturday, 10 April 2021 09:14 (three years ago) link

whoa! guess I have watched enough SA music videos by now to get a feel for the place

but how do you get from there to identifying a seemingly generic suburban street?

when cb mentioned Kenwyn I had a look at it and it very much had the vibe of the pic, but I was thrown by the Cook pines comment upthread. those trees do look like them (not that I’m an expert) and from what I could find they’re not really grown in SA. had just started investigating Auckland NZ.

do we have the exact location yet?

Blick, Bils & Blinky • Let's Skip The Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Saturday, 10 April 2021 09:39 (three years ago) link

It's not Kenwyn but pretty close. I know we sometimes guess exact location but I wouldn't expect it here.

The narrowness of the street ruled out most other possibles, but it just felt like South Africa. And then if it was SA then Cape Town seemed the most likely. Had a look around and saw those trees wherever I looked, the four lines, the streetlights, the little verges all matched.

Kenywn had the right vibe, though I noticed the weather is different so could be an older streetview. Cape Town is extensively covered, didn't have any luck getting any closer to the actual street

xp
I had just read about Cook pines (they naturally lean toward the equator) a couple weeks ago, and thought maybe the poster had included one as a clue.

nickn, Saturday, 10 April 2021 16:46 (three years ago) link

a sensible assumption, I’d say.
I’m still wondering if the trees in that pic are in fact Cook pines or not

if *whether

Blick, Bils & Blinky • Let's Skip The Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Saturday, 10 April 2021 18:44 (three years ago) link

I don't know, but the leaning one did look like one. And the non-leaning one looked like a Norfolk Island pine, which is a related species in the same area. The NI pines are planted frequently in SoCal, so I guess the Cook might range wide now too, which makes that "clue" (if it is a Cook) not as good for identifying the location.

Went back to get it, 1.3 miles north of Kenwyn

cherry blossom, Sunday, 11 April 2021 19:15 (three years ago) link

Heroic. The cook pines were not a clue btw, had not heard of them before.

I just went immediately north of Kenwyn and dropped on a couple of streets till I found one with the same cloudier sky. Similar cloud formation made me think its a north-south street so just kept going north and it arrived after about a mile

Anyway back to Weekend at Cherry's (Obelisk edition)

The mountains aren’t big enough to be Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy but it has the feel of somewhere in the East of Russia you usually see covered in snow.
