"shame no one tried to pair him with doom. He always sounded best on kinda lo fi ummah or DJ scratch beats"

Idk, rhymes galore, put your hands..., and many other tracks show busta was pretty fabulous, arguable better, on other sorts of beats. Doom on the other hand, was more like nas.

voodoo chili, Thursday, 15 April 2021 20:14 (three years ago) link

candyman please email in a ballot. Dying to read that. To your earlier question about posting it on the board, people often do that following the roll-out (which will be on a new thread linked from here in the coming days). Cheers

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 15 April 2021 20:18 (three years ago) link

Xpost, doom and nas are better on less produced boom bap stuff IMO. I mean that jj doom album was cool, but I prefer him on grittier stuff.

candyman, Thursday, 15 April 2021 20:34 (three years ago) link

ah ok. i kinda disagree with that re: doom. i wouldn't call madvillain or mm food "gritty" in the traditional sense. viktor vaughn, sure.

voodoo chili, Thursday, 15 April 2021 20:37 (three years ago) link

Vikster the slickster tho

I'd close thread there if i could

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 15 April 2021 20:58 (three years ago) link

just sent my nominations. i cant imagine my choices are that different to others tbh (listening back to operation doomsday, i forgot how much i must have listened to it at the time and how many of the songs i remembered so well, really hard to pick standouts) though i did add a top ten doom instrumentals list. madvillainy is overrated a bit i reckon, though i can accept its a good doom album and for people who find his beats a bit idiosyncratic, its prob easier to get into. i really wanted to nominate tick tick feat grimm (white album sample pre dangermouse!) but didnt know where to put it. you need to allow for a mf grimm bonus ballot! grimm and doom were a great duo.

candyman, Thursday, 15 April 2021 21:36 (three years ago) link

You can totally vote for a Grimm produced by DOOM (or anybody else). Revisions before midnight Pacific are fine as well.

I'm liking the top beats list as well. I will probably be able to produce a "herbs" list just out of the vocal versions people voted for. I mentioned maybe doing that in OP but never suggested sending in a herbs list. Though a bunch of people did include instrumentals among their tracks.

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 15 April 2021 21:42 (three years ago) link

oops that reads backwards. Anybody produced by DOOM is fair game on the tracks ballot, I meant.

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 15 April 2021 21:43 (three years ago) link

Also, I've replied to all ballots. If you haven't heard back from me, shout at me here.

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 15 April 2021 21:45 (three years ago) link

ill prob leave it as is but might do a grimm/doom top 10 list as a bonus ballot (argh i might have to find my MIC album too).

candyman, Thursday, 15 April 2021 21:47 (three years ago) link

actually i didnt include the gheedorah album in my album list, just cos it was more of a doom crew rather than doom album, but it is my favourite doom album in terms of his productions.

candyman, Thursday, 15 April 2021 21:49 (three years ago) link

It would be best to slot them into one big tracks ballot along with your instrumental picks. Otherwise it'll just be some input for me doing some stats on instrumentals, and something you could post in the roll-out thread for discussion. Whatever you like tho.

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 15 April 2021 21:50 (three years ago) link

yeah Geedorah is tricky to place. Most have though. Slot it in there somewhere if you want to help boost it.

maf you one two (maffew12), Thursday, 15 April 2021 21:51 (three years ago) link

I'll just post it here later. Interested to see the results now.

So who you gonna call? The martini police (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 16 April 2021 10:20 (three years ago) link

Cool!

Finally did mine last night. Splitting hairs between things i noted 9 and 10 during a slow listen through this whole time. 60 tracks. One other ballot was that long too.

So max 60 tracks at this point, so I can go ahead and sort out the points scale soon. Minimum still just 10 tracks. And/or 5 albums. Still no max on albums.

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 16 April 2021 12:11 (three years ago) link

I feel bad for pretty much ignoring dangerdoom but n/m

candyman, Friday, 16 April 2021 12:19 (three years ago) link

"I wouldn't call madvillain or mm food "gritty" in the traditional sense. viktor vaughn, sure."

Madvillainy isn't gritty? Sure sounds it to me. It has that whole dusty crate digging vibe all over it, to my ears. Partly why I'm not an unconditional maflub fan, sonetimes that dustiness feels a bit uniform.

Mmm food, true, theres more electro samples on there, which gives it a diff vibe and texture. But at this point IIRC producers like 9th wonder were using cleaner sonics too. As a producer I think doom seemed to use a lot of clear loops, but it was the way he triggered the samples that disrupted that smoothness.

candyman, Friday, 16 April 2021 12:24 (three years ago) link

The grit was always in his drums though, and the weird slightly drunken lopsided timing was how he triggered those drum tracks too

candyman, Friday, 16 April 2021 12:25 (three years ago) link

I want to see if anyone voted for nastradoomus lol

candyman, Friday, 16 April 2021 12:26 (three years ago) link

I also pretty much wound up ignoring Danger in the end. 60 tracks just wasn't long enough to really get into that (and I didn't want to go longer than that in the end...cripes).

For all the talk of features and productions and all the nerd stuff that I love so much, you know that 90% of my ballot was from the 99-04 run of albums. So one last appeal to the more casual fans: if you've only heard the big releases, get on in here.

maf you one two (maffew12), Friday, 16 April 2021 12:29 (three years ago) link

Still not heard the bishop nehru album but oh well.

candyman, Friday, 16 April 2021 12:34 (three years ago) link

xp No one has put Nastradoomus up yet, no. I did say no bootlegs or fan mixed stuff. But did DOOM actually make this one? This is all super fuzzy (if anyone is wondering how there could be no maximum on the albums ballot... it's open for discussion).

I don't think you're missing much on the Nehru but it's a pleasant listen.
