The fences are too low for the U.S., tweakers would be all over that place.

The van at the right looks like a Mitsubishi Delica which would be fairly rare in the U.S.

obviously a racecourse. for horses, probably.

a picture search for racecourses near junkyards brings up some odd results.

koogs, Thursday, 22 April 2021 03:37 (three years ago) link

On the first picture, how usual is it to have a blue line in the road? I feel like I don't see that.

Alba, Thursday, 22 April 2021 03:50 (three years ago) link

Its a red herring, we've had this before. Or Something's phone adds this blue line to every image!

cherry blossom, Thursday, 22 April 2021 03:54 (three years ago) link

(every image from Streetview, that is)

cherry blossom, Thursday, 22 April 2021 03:55 (three years ago) link

Oh! Weird.

Alba, Thursday, 22 April 2021 03:58 (three years ago) link

It's literally in their screen name ha ha. Sorry, late to this game.

Nothing to suggest that the racecourse and junkyard are near each other though

cherry blossom, Thursday, 22 April 2021 04:02 (three years ago) link

Not the racecourse in Hobart or Launceston as far as I can tell, but they both have the same type of railings, so this could be Aus/NZ.

Zelda Zonk, Thursday, 22 April 2021 06:03 (three years ago) link

i was getting results for londonw33d.net in my picture search.

Is the sheep grazing on the racecourse a factor?

cherry blossom, Monday, 26 April 2021 11:45 (three years ago) link

You could say it's a bit of a clue. I honestly thought the racecourse would make this quite getable. Do people want another pic?

ignore the blue line (or something), Monday, 26 April 2021 12:02 (three years ago) link

The racecourse does feel like a pretty big clue, especially with the sheep. Lets go a bit longer before next pic, feels like we should be able to get it from here

cherry blossom, Monday, 26 April 2021 12:20 (three years ago) link

I don't know a ton about racecourses but I feel like they don't usually allow sheep on them. And the grass looks a little worn too

Chepstow is the only racecourse I know of in Wales.

no sheep anywhere though

koogs, Monday, 26 April 2021 13:41 (three years ago) link

the sheep may be red herrings then

StanM, Monday, 26 April 2021 14:26 (three years ago) link

No they're definitely sheep

I'm not adding any help to identifying it but I have a question about the two small brown (fur?) things that seem to be attached the the fence in the foreground. They look identical to each other.

Diggin Holes (Ste), Monday, 26 April 2021 14:58 (three years ago) link

(almost anyway)

tbh it's not a question either. Just weird.

I just thought 'fuck it I'll go through that list alba posted but actually search the names in google maps for hi-res pics', luckily it was the second one on the list or i might have died. So, Invercargill!

Woo!!

Alba, Tuesday, 27 April 2021 14:49 (three years ago) link

Finally!

I thought somebody would get it fairly quickly after Alba's link especially when the introductory paragraph starts "There are 52 racecourses in New Zealand, from Ascot Park at Invercargill in the South..."

ignore the blue line (or something), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 14:51 (three years ago) link

ha. I thought Dunedin and there was one that looked a bit close but didnt check Invercargill

cherry blossom, Tuesday, 27 April 2021 14:54 (three years ago) link

does Google Streetview automatically clone tool stuff? those two identical things on the fence are there in several angles

oh, it does - the white curvy bit on the fence above is doubled too

StanM, Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:02 (three years ago) link

it'll be part of the stitching algorithm

Invercargill is possibly the ugliest place name I've ever heard in my life.

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:47 (three years ago) link

Truly hope the Maori take over again and call it by its rightful name, WaihŨpai

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:47 (three years ago) link

The Inver- part is nice, the -Cargill part not so much.

Authoritarian Steaks (Tom D.), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:53 (three years ago) link

Also it doesn't make sense unless it stands on the River Cargill, which it doesn't.

Authoritarian Steaks (Tom D.), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:56 (three years ago) link

I mean, it should be called WaihŨpai anyway.

it's like edging for your mind (the table is the table), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:57 (three years ago) link

Invercargill's second appearance on the thread, also appearing last April

cherry blossom, Tuesday, 27 April 2021 15:59 (three years ago) link

What are the chances!

ignore the blue line (or something), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 16:24 (three years ago) link

Apologies for the thread faux pas.

I guess the ugliness of the name suggests some sort of context of aesthetics thing because coming from the north of England where gill means stream and living in Scotland where Inver, as Tom D. has acknowledged, Inver means river mouth, the name doesn't read badly but without that I can certainly see how it would

ignore the blue line (or something), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 16:29 (three years ago) link

Notwithstanding this of course

No reason a city can't make a repeat appearance!

cherry blossom, Tuesday, 27 April 2021 16:49 (three years ago) link

It's interesting, Philadelphia has a LOT of Lenape (aka indigenous) names and a LOT of Welsh and Dutch names, so I'm used to some somewhat off-kilter naming situationsā€” for example, I had many friends who went to Bala Cynwyd middle school, and I live near the Schuylkill River. I think that the residue of the Cargill corporation sort of rubs off on Invercargill and makes it more ugly than it actually is, to my eyes and ears.
