OK, so I'm just reading about the Welsh Tract...

Vienna?

can't find the shot as it was posted, but it's the exact same spot

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Thursday, 29 April 2021 13:45 (two years ago) link

How'd you get Finland?

a (waterface), Thursday, 29 April 2021 15:02 (two years ago) link

It was obviously (Central or Northern) Europe. Found an identical Finnish traffic sign for bus + taxi lane. Then found that bus: part of the Vainion Liikenne fleet. checked the company’s Finnish Wikipedia page: active in quite a large section of the country, but I decided to try Turku first, as it was mentioned a lot (and I was guessing it wasn’t going to be Helsinki again, because we had it not too long ago), and yes, the church tower matched Turku Cathedral, so then it was off to Google Maps – found the spot quite quickly.

textbook case, I think. this thread taught me well.

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Thursday, 29 April 2021 15:14 (two years ago) link

bravo. this thread, even as a mostly lurker, is wonderful

a (waterface), Thursday, 29 April 2021 15:19 (two years ago) link

Good job. I thought it might be Finland from the signs but either https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_European_road_signs or Turku's end of speed limit signs need updating.

I took drugs recently and why doesn't the UK? (ledge), Thursday, 29 April 2021 15:20 (two years ago) link

impressive!

and I was guessing it wasn’t going to be Helsinki again, because we had it not too long ago

Did we? I know we had Tampere but I don't recall Helsinki!

cherry blossom, Thursday, 29 April 2021 15:21 (two years ago) link

forgot about Tampere! But Helsinki too - I checked: 11 January.

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Thursday, 29 April 2021 15:26 (two years ago) link

ah yes, I see now - I think it was guessed correctly before I saw it, so it didn't register as much

Thursday II

cherry blossom, Thursday, 29 April 2021 18:21 (two years ago) link

Google car has taken a hell of a wrong turn there.

I took drugs recently and why doesn't the UK? (ledge), Thursday, 29 April 2021 18:27 (two years ago) link

Somewhere in Nevada? Bakersfield? I see those black tanker cars on road trips all the time.
(Wherever it is, doesn't look very city-like!)

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 29 April 2021 18:28 (two years ago) link

That hovering thing in the front is scaffolding, so maybe somebody climbed up there for the shot?

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 29 April 2021 18:29 (two years ago) link

There's a sign in the distance between the scaffolding uprights that I thought said "Mia" on the top left, but really it's too indistinct to be sure.

nickn, Thursday, 29 April 2021 18:34 (two years ago) link

Needs someone with an eye for distinguishing industrial plants. I came across this pulping place in Columbus County, WA, which looks like the right kind of setting at least:

But I may be way off

Billings Montana?

a (waterface), Thursday, 29 April 2021 18:45 (two years ago) link

If it was petrochemical, it would likely be a much more secure facility - but something is definitely either filling or pumping out those tanker cars on the tracks. And it's pretty green, not dried out like West Texas.

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 29 April 2021 18:48 (two years ago) link

Here's the other side from the highway?

Turku in 29 minutes and Billings in 24. I'm going to have to wear extra hats to facilitate taking my hat off

cherry blossom, Thursday, 29 April 2021 18:59 (two years ago) link

Rad! Can't believe I got one. I spent a long two weeks in Billings one spring few years back.

a (waterface), Thursday, 29 April 2021 19:00 (two years ago) link

lol at Finland quiz. I've had wine gums that have lasted longer.

what's the flag on top of that tower on the left?

koogs, Thursday, 29 April 2021 19:02 (two years ago) link

Now I really want wine gums. Well done, waterface!

Alba, Thursday, 29 April 2021 19:04 (two years ago) link

Ha, well played...I thought I detected a red & yellow KOA billboard in the distance, now I can see it's for Denny's.

Andy the Grasshopper, Thursday, 29 April 2021 19:09 (two years ago) link

It does! Funny I never would have gotten it if I hadn't visited there but after that crawling around the city on Google Maps was fun

For some reason, the image is dark sometimes and light others. If its too dark for anyone I'll try reupping it later

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 16:39 (two years ago) link

it’s dark for me in Zing, dark when I open the PostImage link in Safari, but it lights up when I click on it. spooky!

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 16:50 (two years ago) link

Fine in Chrome/Windows 10. That's not helping me work out where it is though.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 16:53 (two years ago) link

Doesn't half look like Leeds.

Tim, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 17:16 (two years ago) link

We had Leeds the other week though

What time zone is cherry blossom in?

o. nate, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 17:35 (two years ago) link

cb, post a photo so we can do this proper

rob, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 17:37 (two years ago) link

Its really weird, I just tried with a new one and it went dark the minute I uploaded it, let me try somewhere else

ok lets see if this is any better

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 17:42 (two years ago) link

oh I didn't think that post through, I meant "post a photo of your time zone so we can guess it" -- sorry if that sounded rude

rob, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 17:45 (two years ago) link

well, we got a bonus view out of it, with a wider scope. result!

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 17:48 (two years ago) link

looks like the UK to me, although im not sure about that lamppost.

there's a possibly distinctive bridge (a railway bridge?) in the background

《Myst1kOblivi0n》 (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 17:49 (two years ago) link

car direction in the first pic indicates RHD, so not UK, but it might just be parked the wrong way round.

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 17:51 (two years ago) link

There does seem to be a car pointing in the same direction on the other side of the road.

Tim, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 18:10 (two years ago) link

Those houses in the first pic are the most UK thing ever. Seems like a fairly big city centre in the distance...

Searching a while based on the tower block design it appears to be a view of Newcastle from Gateshead (mun).

nashwan, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 18:11 (two years ago) link

It was actually a search for 'durham tower block' (not that I thought this would be Durham itself) that got me this Flickr pic

https://www.flickr.com/photos/photoshopnogo/29966774356

So fairly lucky with that one!
