oh I didn't think that post through, I meant "post a photo of your time zone so we can guess it" -- sorry if that sounded rude

well, we got a bonus view out of it, with a wider scope. result!

looks like the UK to me, although im not sure about that lamppost.

there's a possibly distinctive bridge (a railway bridge?) in the background

《Myst1kOblivi0n》 (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 17:49 (two years ago) link

car direction in the first pic indicates RHD, so not UK, but it might just be parked the wrong way round.

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 17:51 (two years ago) link

There does seem to be a car pointing in the same direction on the other side of the road.

Tim, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 18:10 (two years ago) link

Those houses in the first pic are the most UK thing ever. Seems like a fairly big city centre in the distance...

Searching a while based on the tower block design it appears to be a view of Newcastle from Gateshead (mun).

nashwan, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 18:11 (two years ago) link

It was actually a search for 'durham tower block' (not that I thought this would be Durham itself) that got me this Flickr pic

So fairly lucky with that one!

nice!

Good one, though some credit must go the chicanery of Rob, tricking me into a second easier photo

Today

cherry blossom, Thursday, 13 May 2021 19:05 (two years ago) link

is that a menu on the table on the right? and is that the Union Jack on the cover? is it a British-themed place somewhere in the world? or a place in a tourist town catering to British visitors?

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Thursday, 13 May 2021 19:15 (two years ago) link

could the stuffed bear be a clue?

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Thursday, 13 May 2021 19:17 (two years ago) link

just asking the questions here

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Thursday, 13 May 2021 19:17 (two years ago) link

it looks dry, maybe Mediterranean, but very unglamorous

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Thursday, 13 May 2021 19:19 (two years ago) link

in the distance there's a black sign with red letters that could be Caffe = italian?

StanM, Thursday, 13 May 2021 19:19 (two years ago) link

I’m just going to say Albania

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Thursday, 13 May 2021 19:24 (two years ago) link

I was kinda randomly google driving around in Barcelona just because of the possible union jack menu but Barcelona is way big and probably wrong anyway

StanM, Thursday, 13 May 2021 19:33 (two years ago) link

I'm confused by the yellow sign with a black 'X' on it that's in the background right in the center of the picture. It's a weird place to find such a sign that I associate with some danger warning, but maybe it's just a shop sign. For some reason I'm thinking Turkey or Croatia.

Dinsdale, Thursday, 13 May 2021 21:09 (two years ago) link

looks like lottery or betting signs behind her head

That is the logo of Raiffeisen Bank, you can see the name of the bank written in white on black slightly to the right of the sign. It's an Austrian bank but I don't think this is anywhere in Austria. They have a big presence in Albania as well but I checked all the largest towns in Albania for Raiffeisen branches and couldn't find a match, I could well have missed it though.

!!!
they have branches all over Eastern Europe in fact

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Friday, 14 May 2021 08:42 (two years ago) link

Alright anagram, that makes more sense. I guess it's up to whoever is the fastest to check out all of this bank's locations now.

Dinsdale, Friday, 14 May 2021 18:46 (two years ago) link

they've got like 100 locations and ATMs in each eastern european city :(

StanM, Saturday, 15 May 2021 14:05 (two years ago) link

yeah, I tried plenty, but no luck so far

cherry blossom, Tuesday, 18 May 2021 14:06 (two years ago) link

Graffiti appears to be in cyrillic script, in part at least.

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 18 May 2021 14:11 (two years ago) link

Could be way off but it looks like the Raiffeisenbank sign lettering is in white Latin/Roman (whereas they do use Cyrillic for their branches in Bulgaria) on dark grey background and the country I've noticed that colour combination in the most so far by some distance is Bosnia-Herzegovina.

nashwan, Tuesday, 18 May 2021 22:19 (two years ago) link

Yes and there's something at the back of the photo, to the right of the mountain, that looks like it might be a minaret. Maybe Sarajevo?

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 19 May 2021 03:45 (two years ago) link

yep, Sarajevo! Not sure why I didn't look much there before now - lack of Streetview I guess but there are only so many of those banks there

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Monday, 24 May 2021 21:47 (two years ago) link

🎉

Yes, Caffe London in the Ciglane neighbourhood in Sarajevo! Second shot is immediately to the west of the cafe at the bottom of the funicular.

There's also a Caffe Paris just along from there the other side of the bank

nashwan, Wednesday, 26 May 2021 11:17 (two years ago) link

don’t think so

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 11:54 (two years ago) link

This shouldn't be too difficult but I'm failing so far. So it's some sort of museum exhibit for a mid-century leader/dictator, either Soviet or Middle-Eastern. Picture on the right at the back looks like it might be Lenin. On the glass cabinet on the right there is what looks like a map, I tried to fit it with any of the stans or maybe Mongolia, but it doesn't work. It most resembles Iran, but I don't see how an exhibit like this could fit in with Iran's history, so I'm stumped.

Actually no I don't think Lenin's in the mix there, all the pics on the right are the same man, an older balder version of the young man in the scarf. Keep thinking it might be Ataturk but no, he didn't make it to old age.

Zelda Zonk, Thursday, 27 May 2021 04:33 (two years ago) link

the bowing statuette, the scarf he's wearing in the central portrait (yeah, it's a cliche but) - is he a famous theater figure?

StanM, Thursday, 27 May 2021 07:54 (two years ago) link

big portrait of Odo from deep space nine.

i think the things in the cabinets are various gifts. (i took the bowing man to be japanese)

koogs, Thursday, 27 May 2021 08:29 (two years ago) link

i was thinking theatre person too. this is a good one

a (waterface), Thursday, 27 May 2021 11:45 (two years ago) link

I am pretty sure that is Ennio Morricone

Looks like him from a distance, also a trumpet in one of the exhibiting cabinets

I can't imagine such a bizarrely chintzy tribute to the man tho, lacking film posters and/or statuettes, so I'm probably wrong

theatre or opera, with some of the costume attributes to the right

StanM, Thursday, 27 May 2021 12:07 (two years ago) link

There's no way that room is Western European. It's got that Soviet or Soviet-influenced vibe.

Zelda Zonk, Thursday, 27 May 2021 12:21 (two years ago) link

On the left, there are a series of certificates with an errant hot-air balloon as the logo, and it seems as if there is a statue of the same, as if this organization has honoured this individual repeatedly. I don't know what that logo is connected to.

It's an odd one. Definitely feels opera-related but not really grand enough for any of the major Soviet houses. It's not the Bakhrushin or Chaliapin museums. The central portrait looks contemporary, so possibly the current director of a company. The building in the picture on the left has an onion dome. I'm leaning towards somewhere like Simferopol or Sevastopol.

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Thursday, 27 May 2021 12:58 (two years ago) link

what about the main cabinet on the right? is the woman on the colour pic (or is it a painting?) the same as the one on the b/w pic in the smaller cabinet to the right of it? there's also what might be a photo of the actor (?) with a woman (the same one? his wife?) on the top shelf.
plus a ceramic figurine in a yellow dress, and, perhaps more interestingly, what looks like a crown of sorts, or is it a traditional female head dress? - or is it something else altogether?
