uh oh (this guy is surely just angling to get bought off)

BREAKING: Meyer Orbach, the second largest shareholder in the Minnesota Timberwolves, filed a complaint in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis alleging owner Glen Taylor’s pending sale to Lore-Rodriguez is in violation of franchise’s partnership agreement: https://t.co/NlM0Cd324s

The complaint filed by Orbach, a New Jersey real estate mogul who owns more than 17% of the Timberwolves and WNBA Lynx, also includes a significant revelation: Despite Taylor's public statements to the contrary, he has included no provision in the $1.5 billion sales agreement with Lore and Rodriguez that requires the new ownership group to keep the franchise in Minnesota upon taking control of the team, according to an exhibit in the complaint.

yep who cares tho

micah, Wednesday, 26 May 2021 22:44 (two years ago) link

have to say no disrespect to minnesota it would be pretty funny if arod moved the team thereby becoming somehow even more hated than he already is

lag∞n, Wednesday, 26 May 2021 22:47 (two years ago) link

Jon K explained the suit, apparently the minority partners want their payout as soon as the deal is done.

but Taylor is trying to make them wait two years because of the stupid "mentoring" thing he wants to do where A Rod and Steve Internet learn the ropes from him

he leaked the no move clause thing just to make Taylor look like a dick in the local media

learn the ropes of sucking donkey balls???

micah, Friday, 28 May 2021 02:12 (two years ago) link

yeah i read a little bit about it, i would do the exact same thing tbh

call all destroyer, Friday, 28 May 2021 02:13 (two years ago) link

being a minority owner is just having a financial stake and getting free luxury box seats, so if you're getting sold out get the money asap

call all destroyer, Friday, 28 May 2021 02:14 (two years ago) link

micah - that has been the subject of many jokes locally

to be sure

Duncan Robinson, on free agency, "First, and foremost, a fit."

— Ira Winderman (@IraHeatBeat) May 31, 2021

wildcard

lag∞n, Monday, 31 May 2021 20:57 (two years ago) link

Duncan is a restricted FA. If he opts for a lesser contract in order to get 'a fit', he just increases the odds Miami will match it, then they could trade him anywhere if they wish.

bringing this out of the celtics thread

Boston head coach Brad Stevens is planning to transition from his current role into becoming the new head of basketball ops. of the Celtics, sources tell @TheAthletic @Stadium.

Danny Ainge plans to resign from his role as Celtics President, sources said.

what an amazing come up for brad, sheesh

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:30 (two years ago) link

How come Duncan Robinson’s nickname isn’t Spurs Dynasty or something like that

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:32 (two years ago) link

excited for larger scale opportunities to say 'bad stevens'

ciderpress, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:32 (two years ago) link

Stevens has been described as worn down with coaching since The Bubble, and welcomed the chance to make the transition to the front office, sources tell ESPN. Stevens will help lead the search for his successor as head coach.

— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) June 2, 2021

hard to take this as anything other than "i'm sick of these guys"

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:33 (two years ago) link

Have to assume that the occasions will come with more frequency in a front office role. Or maybe not more frequency since the team plays 82 (or 72 or whatever) games a year, but by ratio.

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:34 (two years ago) link

feel like there could be some theyre sick of him in the mix too

lag∞n, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:34 (two years ago) link

xp

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:34 (two years ago) link

that part concerns me bcuz i wonder if this is just a happenstance of timing where brad maybe wanted a year off and then the GM job opened up and then 2 years from now he realizes he wants to coach again

yes for sure

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:35 (two years ago) link

wonder where mike zarren fits into this new regime

lag∞n, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:35 (two years ago) link

weird

Spottie, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:35 (two years ago) link

The Celtics went all in on Kyrie and it just didn’t work. They never turned that around. I would love to start with Brown and Tatum tho.

Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:36 (two years ago) link

this just feels off

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:36 (two years ago) link

it’s also tough bcuz if whoever he hires isn’t good enough or isn’t liked by the players there’s gonna be constant pressure for brad to take over like riley did SVG in 06. but this could also work out bcuz brad is very smart

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:37 (two years ago) link

i dont think thats totally accurate although it was obvs a fiasco

lag∞n, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:37 (two years ago) link

he definitely hasn't seemed as in his element the past few years as he was for the IT teams. might just be a guy who doesn't like coaching star players

this just feels off

― call all destroyer, Wednesday, June 2, 2021 10:36 AM (one minute ago) bookmarkflaglink

yeah its pretty weird

lag∞n, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:38 (two years ago) link

it feels like there was a plan to gracefully transition from danny and something threw a wrench in it

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:38 (two years ago) link

prob something like ownership loves brad, brad threatened to quit, they forced ainge out to make brad stay

lag∞n, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:39 (two years ago) link

very weird i agree

ciderpress, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:39 (two years ago) link

hahah

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:46 (two years ago) link

i feel like ainge decided to step down and brad saw the opportunity to get away from coaching without leaving the franchise. but he’s 44 not 65 so it strains the imagination that he’s not going to coach again.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:47 (two years ago) link

also we dont know how real brads position is, curious to see who is above him, maybe theyre kicking him up stairs in the hopes of having him coach again, or maybe just because hes still under contract

lag∞n, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:49 (two years ago) link

i have a feeling that brad does not want to relocate his family right now, they're pretty ensconced in wellesley and his kids are not at the age where moving wouldn't be disruptive. that has to be at least a small part of this.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:51 (two years ago) link

if brad wanted to still be coaching he could’ve just left and been the top coaching candidate in both the college and NBA markets, he could’ve just taken a year off too if that’s what he felt like he needed, the break would’ve been natural with ainge leaving. so he must genuinely want to be in a front office i just think he’ll coach again and it’s weird for a coach to be hired by the team’s ex coach especially one who didn’t accomplish all that much in reality even tho brad is widely respected and acknowledged to be very good at his job. it’s not like brad can go out and hire some thibs like figure whoever that is who is out there, it’s gonna have to be someone less accomplished than him, prob a guy who has never been an NBA head coach before, who understands he’ll be coaching in the shadow of his boss, it all sounds kind of awkward

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:53 (two years ago) link

yeah wild to me that both indiana and north carolina hired new coaches this year and now brad stevens is working in the celtics front office

the mai tai quinn (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 2 June 2021 15:03 (two years ago) link

who didn’t accomplish all that much in reality

― J0rdan S., Wednesday, June 2, 2021 10:53 AM (thirteen minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

went to four easter conference finals all with teams that i think reasonably couldve been called overachievers

lag∞n, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 15:11 (two years ago) link

yeah i’m not trying to disparage brad’s coaching record i’m just saying it’s not like a riley situation where the guy had coached for 20 years and won 4 titles before moving into an executive role. there’s just a certain number of coaches with more experience than brad who prob won’t wanna work for him

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 June 2021 15:21 (two years ago) link

he’ll prob have to find “the next brad stevens” which could be great but it’s different than if they had just hired a normal GM and were looking for a coach, it would prob be the no 1 job on the market and open to the d’antoni level coaches who’ve been around for a while and accomplished a lot

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 June 2021 15:23 (two years ago) link

idk i dont think it matters coaches want jobs and there arent very many of them, much less jobs with a couple young stars on board

lag∞n, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 15:24 (two years ago) link

the bigger concern for me is brad stevens has no front office experience, tho im sure hes in on the conversations and whatnot, but also who knows where hell actually end up in the hierarchy, if mike zarren is his boss then its more reasonable

lag∞n, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 15:25 (two years ago) link

question of mike zarren is perplexing, i googled him to see if anyone was reporting around that and got like 4 years worth of articles talking about him being the heir apparent to danny lol

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 15:26 (two years ago) link

open to the d’antoni level coaches who’ve been around for a while and accomplished a lot

― J0rdan S., Wednesday, June 2, 2021 11:23 AM (two minutes ago) bookmarkflaglink

fwiw stevens is more accomplished than thibs or diantoni lol, also hes been in the league for a while now, tho he does have a baby face

lag∞n, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 15:27 (two years ago) link

btw i’m reading the pat riley wikipedia and this sounds like some crazy shit

Six games into the 1981–82 season, Magic Johnson said he wished to be traded because he was unhappy playing for Westhead. Shortly afterward, Lakers' owner Jerry Buss fired Westhead. At an ensuing press conference, with Jerry West at his side, Buss named West head coach. West, however, balked, and Buss awkwardly tried to name West as "offensive captain" and then named West and Riley as co-coaches.[10] West made it clear during the press conference that he would only assist Riley, and that Riley was the head coach.
