do you like luciano vahid?

tricky, Thursday, 10 May 2007 04:09 (sixteen years ago) link

yes!

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 10 May 2007 04:10 (sixteen years ago) link

but that's just because he's one of a very very few minimal artists that actually build on the promise of minimal = beats more itchy-glitchy and textured and abstractly interesting than those from REAL LIVE HOUSE MUSIC.

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 10 May 2007 04:14 (sixteen years ago) link

ok cos he's the avant one. radio slave makes really good functional tools.

xpost, exactly.

tricky, Thursday, 10 May 2007 04:15 (sixteen years ago) link

the last one though, the thing on "cadenza split composition" with the beatless side that was like foghorns and chanting monks was sorta bullshit, like what's next, villalobos and luciano are going to be scoring beats music for bjork and matthew barney or some lame shit like that.

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 10 May 2007 04:15 (sixteen years ago) link

i didn't realise people were having an omg avant reaction to radioslave, i figured he was just producer du jour for tripped out vaguely minimal peak time bangers; dude sells enough records! though he really cannot fuck with dave taylor.

'moan' is my favourite radio slave i think. i hadn't really thought about rekids v much until the retrospective arrived, and i was surprised at how many i knew and loved. haven't got rounf to the remixes yet...

lex pretend, Thursday, 10 May 2007 06:28 (sixteen years ago) link

i never said there was anything avant about radio slave. it's stoopid and effective, which is enough for me; i find the sonics more interesting than other similar UK stuff. honestly, vahid, i don't understand why you get so freaking upset about people's taste varying from yours. or is it that when there's any appearance of a consensus you don't agree with that raises yr hackles? i'm not a big dirtybird fan, for instance, but i'm not mad that other people seem to like it! the whole avant/populist thing just seems more and more like a straw man -- don't go accusing other ppl of being snooty just because you ascribe them imaginary reasons for liking different shit than you. you know? (i'm not really mad, just a little bewildered that we fell into this thread-rut so very quickly.)

and yeah, "u askin'" rules. (interestingly, i'm totally non-plussed by the dettmann remix, whereas i'm normally a total sucker for dettmann.)

and say what you will about "deer in the headlights" but that tune has never failed me when playing it out.

BleepBot, Thursday, 10 May 2007 07:51 (sixteen years ago) link

The Rekid album (Made in Menorca) is superb. Awesome futuristic slo-mo techno.

braveclub, Thursday, 10 May 2007 09:15 (sixteen years ago) link

I am actually astonished that anyone can like Radioslave's own stuff by now. It is ALWAYS the exact same, just chug chug chug for 11 minutes. It was good for one or two releases but now it's just unbearably dull. And peaktime bangers? These records would PUT A CLUB TO SLEEP. Nobody likes an 11 minute locked groove except at 6 in the morning or something.

Not to just oppose Phil for the sake of it, I don't dislike Radioslave I just think the only deviation from the chugathons was the Kissogram remix. I thought the Rekid album he did on Soul Jazz was better than anything else he's done so far.

As for Rekids, it is kinda hit/miss.

Ronan, Thursday, 10 May 2007 09:16 (sixteen years ago) link

I guess I kinda complete the triangle of vahid and lex in that I prefer dirtybird stuff (for the most part) to either radio slave or switch etc.

Tim F, Thursday, 10 May 2007 16:09 (sixteen years ago) link

I think all 3 are kinda average, with one or two exceptional moments.

Ronan, Thursday, 10 May 2007 16:10 (sixteen years ago) link

i was thinking of you when i noted the contrarians in the audience, ronan. i don't know how to answer except that i've played a ton of RS's shit in both clubs and house parties and they've never but the audience to sleep, quite the contrary...

it's funny, i used to quite like the rekid album but the last few times i listened to it i wasn't nearly as keen on it, can't put my finger on why.

to me, dirty bird is too cheeky, too funny. i realize i'm a sad motherfucker but i've never really cared for much humor in house music.

pshrbrn, Thursday, 10 May 2007 16:12 (sixteen years ago) link

I guess put to sleep was a little strong, but it does seem like they are kind of variations on the same theme.

no, these records definitely do not put clubs to sleep. and i think criticising the remixes for being repetitive and for going "on and on and on" seems pretty ridiculous in a discussion of minimal house music. i mean damn, those maurizio 12s sure are one note huh?

i've yet to hear a rekids release that i have really loved. i did like the discemi release alot, but yeah i suppose it depends on one's tolerance to big irreverent electro house tunes in 2007. there is a luke solomon tune that is quite nice

on the surface that's true but I just don't think there is the depth in most of the remixes to justify the length. radioslave is not maurizio. plus the records aren't very deep anyway. 10 minutes of mid

Ronan, Thursday, 10 May 2007 17:24 (sixteen years ago) link

i mean that deer in the headlights remix is just straight menace
actually i think this is what i get from most of the RS stuff. plus it tends to kick a bit harder than a lot of the minimal house that i'm familiar with. (it strikes me that this puts it in a bit of a halfway house between "proper" minimal stuff and the switch/dirtybird type thing, which probably doesn't help dedicated fans of either side latch onto it.)

(strongo i'll sort you out when i get home.)

HEY

i really like this essential mix!!

big chunks of it sound like a slooowed down compromise between slowed-down speed garage (echoes of "spin spun sugar" in that delayed-out 4/4 stomp) with what ivan smagghe was pushing awhile back (see his "suck my deck" mix).

so this essential mix is the dry run for "misch masch"?? i think i'll be grabbing that, and the rekids comp sooner or later ...

sorta amazed that deeetron and mr g turned out such bangers for this guys label ... (like five years ago i'd have placed them both at the bottom bottom end of the long rut carved out by tribal tech producers, somewhat better than the irredeemably wack shit like adam beyer / ben sims / primate / drumcode / intec, quite a bit below cari lekebusch and mark broom and far faaaar below surgeon and saunderson)

is it pertinent that this guys output is attached as much to that ghetto as to the briefly fashionable classic records / MFF ghetto?

seems to be a fair amount of radio slave backlash so far in the reviews for misch masch ... people certainly seem to have twigged to the "formula" ... also the fact that he uses the *exact* same tracks over and over and over again (ok to be fair they're his remixes, but still) ... he needs to widen his range a bit, i think

anybody get "rekids: one" yet

Yes, I entirely feel you Durrr, and have felt like this for awhile, culminating with Bell Clap Dance, which was just sounds outright bad to me, it just irritates me.
However, he's certainly done some good stuff, such as his remix of Deer in the Headlights, but much more importantly, his remix of Eleny by Le Noir, which is perhaps the best application of his aesthetic to a song/remix/anything of his I've ever heard, and blows away all his other material I've heard with this poignant epic.

This time, or I'll perc you later (mehlt), Friday, 12 December 2008 14:39 (fifteen years ago) link

Hmm... I can't agree. For me, Bell Clap Dance was very welcome fresh air in a period of austere up its own ass 'minimalism'.

sam500, Friday, 12 December 2008 14:41 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm still a fan - i like the slow tense builds, they also work well in mixes as the stepping stone between your floatier cosmic disco-type stuff and more straight-up house or techno. (the 'minimal + cosmic' equation upthread really makes sense to me.) i never really got 'bell clap dance', though simon baker's remix is good.

yes the eleny remix is a good one too. (xp)

Loofah Vandross (haitch), Friday, 12 December 2008 14:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Bell Clap Dance to me is the sonic equivalent of chewing tinfoil with metal fillings (and I have synaesthesia too, so I'm not entirely making this up!)

When I saw him DJ, he was amazing (granted this was at Mutek where his record bag was lost (he probably flew Air Canada there, ha). But filling a big room, late, and really banging (he started at like 128-9 BPM or so) stuff I couldn't sit still listening to at home sounded fantastic (again, this was stuff borrowed from other DJ's, though).

This time, or I'll perc you later (mehlt), Friday, 12 December 2008 14:52 (fifteen years ago) link

'bell clap dance' is a monster.

lex pretend, Friday, 12 December 2008 14:55 (fifteen years ago) link

radio slave might be monotonous, but it's a very singular kind of monotony.

tricky, Friday, 12 December 2008 15:00 (fifteen years ago) link

tricky, Friday, 12 December 2008 15:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Shit I hate being this far off the money. In the context that I first hear it, Bell Clap Dance sounded like the business.

That context was a Damian Lazurus mix from last year - and maybe that's the problem haha.

sam500, Friday, 12 December 2008 15:03 (fifteen years ago) link

you don't have to change your opinion on the track just because mehlt eats tinfoil.

Loofah Vandross (haitch), Friday, 12 December 2008 15:10 (fifteen years ago) link

Yes, I will continue to enjoy this track whatever mehlt's diet du jour.

sam500, Friday, 12 December 2008 15:14 (fifteen years ago) link

i always think radio slave's music is what the crap discussed in this thread "Indie electro": the worst genre ever? would sound like, were it any good.

...i don't get this at all, what's indie/electro about it?

re: the monotonous thing, i can see how people got this from his 2006-2007 remixes (the 'cosmic meets minimal via carl craig stuff') but there's more to him than that... there's the poppier remixes for one thing, and the slo-mo rekid stuff, and 'no sleep' parts 4 and 5 broadened his sound a bit more.

braveclub, Friday, 12 December 2008 15:20 (fifteen years ago) link

it's not indie/electro, but it has that overwhelming, piledriving, grinding feel to it which i assume is what justice et al aim for (except radio slave does it, you know, really well, and doesn't give me a headache)

lex pretend, Friday, 12 December 2008 15:29 (fifteen years ago) link

I thought the tin foil with fillings/braces thing was common knowledge, it produces this very strange metallic sensation that's not like a synthesis of taste feeling at the same time, if that makes sense, and it's not entirely pleasant. Try it sometime!

It also seems that the vast majority (all but me) seems to approve of Bell Clap Dance.

This time, or I'll perc you later (mehlt), Friday, 12 December 2008 15:35 (fifteen years ago) link

radio slave is a fucking genius. what happened with the humate remix? i want to hear that soooo bad.

not understanding radioslave is probably more to do with listening at home on your own in your bedroom rather than going mad in front of a big rig. Comparing this to justice/electrohouse is one of the lamest opinions i've heard on here in a while

don't think it has yet. i did read somewhere, RA perhaps, that he might be retiring the radio slave name - maybe he's waiting for whatever remixes are still unreleased to come out, then the comp will come out as a kind of full-stop.

the upcoming innervisions 12" by 'the machine' is his latest alias, 4 those who don't know. (appears to only be appearing with ame and dixon mixes, so perhaps rekids are doing a release too.)

reason for delay = Fabric mix.
the deal was that Rekids didn't release any Radio Slave material 3 months before/after the Fabric mix.

six years pass...

... years later

following a re-org of my digital archive i have come to the conclusion that the best way to experience the REKIDS sound is via the label-centric mixes.
i.e. disc 3 of Revolutions, or the japanese release, 'rekids mixed by radio slave'
of course there is the misch masch/radio disco/tokyo official mixes, but these dilute the purity of the REKIDS sound.

another question that this revival has instigated : REKIDS vs buzzin' fly

both labels were interconnected with artists appearing on each label,
both labels were heavily into design,
both labels were lead by an artist with an agenda/sound,
both labels were dance/electronica/house/techno/maxi/minimal

i loved both labels, but which is best ?

i would set up a poll, but suspect no-one gives a shit about either these days.
