Germany Zear Zero is, strictly, by Rossellini...

'The Third Generation', 'Merchant of Four Seasons', and 'Lola' would be my three at this point in time. I really want to see 'Mutter Kuster's Trip to Heaven' or whatever it's called. And Criterion's BRD DVD set looks fanstastic.

Then what film am I thinking of? I think it was a short by Fassbinder in which he and his mother discuss the holocaust. Fassbinder's "character" is doing drugs throughout.

I remember seeing this film in one of my undergrad classes, if i wasn't just dreaming it.

I'm afraid Fassbinder is one of those directors I'm embarassed to admit I find rather dull. But I've only seen Ali and Maria Braun, and I kinda find Sirk a bit monotonous too.

Somebody persuade my barbarian self otherwise.

chuck--fassbinder's definitely an acquired taste, and the pacing of his films has kind of makes you feel like you're on morphine when you're watching them (hey, there was a good chance fassbinder was on morphine when he was making them!)

but he really has a style all of his own, and there is some really subtle genius at work in his films. you start to really see his true cinematic vision after four or five films.

he's never been one of my favorite filmmakers, but i enjoy his work.

The film was called "Germany in Autumn." It was a compilation of shorts by German directors made in response to the Baader-Meinhof incident.

Thank you!

I have only seen "Bitter Tears..." and I liked it a lot. Really intersting to watch the shifting dynamics of the relationships, as Petra goes from dominant to dominated, and tries to go back at the very end. I was worried that a film shot entirely in one apartment would become trying but it never did.

sixteen years pass...

watched Baal... what an absolute delight just watching young magnetic Rainer strut around for 90 minutes.
