First gut feeling without peering too closely: Germany, Austria or Czech Republic

Zelda Zonk, Sunday, 6 June 2021 12:31 (two years ago) link

I got nothing - other than it feels European indeed

StanM, Sunday, 6 June 2021 20:21 (two years ago) link

Gonna open the bidding with Vienna, but I'm not 100% convinced.

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Sunday, 6 June 2021 21:25 (two years ago) link

does not feel like Czech Republic at all to me

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Sunday, 6 June 2021 21:35 (two years ago) link

buildings are all the same, looks like an upmarket council estate.

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Sunday, 6 June 2021 21:37 (two years ago) link

... or a section of a city that had to be rebuilt quickly after being destroyed in a war?

StanM, Sunday, 6 June 2021 22:46 (two years ago) link

The buildings have chimneys, which, unless they're a postmodern flourish, means they couldn't be more recent than the 50s and are more likely to be older. They look a bit like the housing estates built in Vienna in the 1920s, and the river looks like it could be the Danube Canal, but I can't see any bridges over the Danube Canal that look like that steel thing in the background.

Zelda Zonk, Monday, 7 June 2021 04:22 (two years ago) link

Germany and Poland clearly have too many cities on rivers. Something has to be done about this imho.

StanM, Monday, 7 June 2021 09:28 (two years ago) link

I want to say Warsaw, but I don't think I'm correct.

maybe this is completely wrong to the right of that first lamp post there's a christmas decoration and then four white signs with their pole behind them - a bit further on, there's a maroon sign also on the left of the road... making me wonder: are we driving on the left here?

StanM, Monday, 7 June 2021 15:43 (two years ago) link

it doesn't feel like any of these countries though - so that's probably wrong. ( https://www.worldstandards.eu/cars/list-of-left-driving-countries/ )

StanM, Monday, 7 June 2021 15:45 (two years ago) link

chimneys or not, don’t these housing blocks look quite new and modern (very much post-1950s), especially compared to the state of the asphalt road?

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Monday, 7 June 2021 16:33 (two years ago) link

Protected bike lane makes me think Denmark.

o. nate, Monday, 7 June 2021 16:39 (two years ago) link

are roads that badly-maintained in Denmark?

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 7 June 2021 16:42 (two years ago) link

that's somewhere it snows (steep roofs) and i agree on the slightly rundown mitteleuropa vibe. maybe leipzig or dresden or something? but white buildings feel swedish?

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Monday, 7 June 2021 17:08 (two years ago) link

I don't know about Denmark but here in New Jersey those roads would be considered in pretty nice condition.

o. nate, Monday, 7 June 2021 18:06 (two years ago) link

I guess presence of pothole-patching also more evidence for a climate where it snows in winter.

o. nate, Monday, 7 June 2021 18:08 (two years ago) link

is the link broken?

You know, I was just looking at some bridges in Uppsala, Sweden and while none were the right one, it didn't feel *that* impossible either. So I'm going North for a couple of tries.

StanM, Tuesday, 8 June 2021 15:49 (two years ago) link

Link is still there for me - though there were internet problems yesterday I think?

RHD, only the back of signs but quite an odd bike symbol on the ground, I have a feeling that this could be former East Germany or even Poland.

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 9 June 2021 07:52 (two years ago) link

that rail on the nearest roof - to keep snow from falling off?

StanM, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 13:40 (two years ago) link

What are those weird-looking trees in the courtyard at the far right of the picture?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 9 June 2021 15:34 (two years ago) link

artwork?

StanM, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 15:36 (two years ago) link

on the first picture too (different views of the same neighborhood probably)

StanM, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 15:37 (two years ago) link

I've seen real trees that look like that right after they've been severely pruned.

nickn, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 16:05 (two years ago) link

I’m struggling to recall seeing anywhere in Poland built so uniformly, when it comes to mid-rise blocks. I’m wondering whether it might be the Netherlands.

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Wednesday, 9 June 2021 16:13 (two years ago) link

maybe that big cluster of identical looking buildings is one big... hospital? or a retirement home type thing?

StanM, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 16:16 (two years ago) link

I don't think the Netherlands have roads that bad. Belgium, maybe, but those buildings don't look Belgian

StanM, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 16:17 (two years ago) link

trying to make sense of the bridge/crossing in the back of the first picture. can’t make out if it’s open or closed. could it be an overground metro line or a (sub)urban railway line?

Long Tall Arsetee & the Shaker Intros (breastcrawl), Wednesday, 9 June 2021 16:24 (two years ago) link

Revising my hypothesis to France, having noticed the bike lane symbol with solid wheels like the ones used in Paris.

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Wednesday, 9 June 2021 16:26 (two years ago) link

Strasbourg, France!

https://goo.gl/maps/rGVmzkM3UyzMEg5m6

Eventually hit on the idea of googling for bike lane markers in different countries and bike-friendly European cities, quickly found that Strasbourg uses those distinctive markings with the solid wheels.

o. nate, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 16:43 (two years ago) link

xp - I see others were on the same track.

o. nate, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 16:44 (two years ago) link

Strasbourg! yes, makes sense, has that rebuilt-but-crumbling vibe of French Belgium.

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 9 June 2021 16:56 (two years ago) link

do the no-waiting double yellow lines combined with the scenery suggest that it’s either the UK or Ireland? if so, I’m probably going to have to sit this one out

Can confirm that it's not in Nottingham

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 9 June 2021 17:34 (two years ago) link

o.wow @ o.nate - well done on the Strasbourg!

StanM, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 17:35 (two years ago) link

the new pic - I was staring at the wall & plats just to the left of the lighter rectangle in the middle of the pic but it's Google Streetview pasting two images together again (creating that clone tool effect)

wall & plaNts

StanM, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 17:48 (two years ago) link

🎉 on the Strasbourg, impressed!

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 18:14 (two years ago) link

Yellow lines suggest UK, though it could be a replica in Huizhou

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 18:20 (two years ago) link

Looks like a rail bridge on the left

cherry blossom, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 18:27 (two years ago) link

it's a fascinating wall though - is that black pole that's now in the wall itself an ex-gaslight? or did it support the horizontal (stone?) slabs & this is some kind of walled-up gallery?

StanM, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 18:31 (two years ago) link

Liverpool?

ignore the blue line (or something), Wednesday, 9 June 2021 18:39 (two years ago) link

I can confirm that walls seem to be present in Liverpool

StanM, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 19:23 (two years ago) link

the "it's grim up North" vibe does resonate though, I don't disagree
