are roads that badly-maintained in Denmark?

that's somewhere it snows (steep roofs) and i agree on the slightly rundown mitteleuropa vibe. maybe leipzig or dresden or something? but white buildings feel swedish?
― ๐ ๐๐ข๐จ (caek), Monday, 7 June 2021 17:08 (two years ago) link
I don't know about Denmark but here in New Jersey those roads would be considered in pretty nice condition.
― o. nate, Monday, 7 June 2021 18:06 (two years ago) link
I guess presence of pothole-patching also more evidence for a climate where it snows in winter.
― o. nate, Monday, 7 June 2021 18:08 (two years ago) link
is the link broken?
You know, I was just looking at some bridges in Uppsala, Sweden and while none were the right one, it didn't feel *that* impossible either. So I'm going North for a couple of tries.

Link is still there for me - though there were internet problems yesterday I think?

RHD, only the back of signs but quite an odd bike symbol on the ground, I have a feeling that this could be former East Germany or even Poland.

that rail on the nearest roof - to keep snow from falling off?

What are those weird-looking trees in the courtyard at the far right of the picture?

on the first picture too (different views of the same neighborhood probably)

I've seen real trees that look like that right after they've been severely pruned.

Iโm struggling to recall seeing anywhere in Poland built so uniformly, when it comes to mid-rise blocks. Iโm wondering whether it might be the Netherlands.
― Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Wednesday, 9 June 2021 16:13 (two years ago) link
maybe that big cluster of identical looking buildings is one big... hospital? or a retirement home type thing?
― StanM, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 16:16 (two years ago) link
I don't think the Netherlands have roads that bad. Belgium, maybe, but those buildings don't look Belgian
― StanM, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 16:17 (two years ago) link
trying to make sense of the bridge/crossing in the back of the first picture. canโt make out if itโs open or closed. could it be an overground metro line or a (sub)urban railway line?

Revising my hypothesis to France, having noticed the bike lane symbol with solid wheels like the ones used in Paris.

Strasbourg, France!

Eventually hit on the idea of googling for bike lane markers in different countries and bike-friendly European cities, quickly found that Strasbourg uses those distinctive markings with the solid wheels.

xp - I see others were on the same track.

Strasbourg! yes, makes sense, has that rebuilt-but-crumbling vibe of French Belgium.

do the no-waiting double yellow lines combined with the scenery suggest that itโs either the UK or Ireland? if so, Iโm probably going to have to sit this one out

the new pic - I was staring at the wall & plats just to the left of the lighter rectangle in the middle of the pic but it's Google Streetview pasting two images together again (creating that clone tool effect)

― cherry blossom, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 18:27 (two years ago) link
it's a fascinating wall though - is that black pole that's now in the wall itself an ex-gaslight? or did it support the horizontal (stone?) slabs & this is some kind of walled-up gallery?

― StanM, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 19:27 (two years ago) link
yeah. looks like a sign on the wall on the right like they have along railway lines but i can't make out the letters BRO OFW? (and then a distance, in chains, from the nearest station)
curious about the railings on the roof in strasbourg.
― koogs, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 21:38 (two years ago) link
Just a guess, but might be a way to allow for snow to melt without cascading down in sheets and hurting people during a thaw?
― heyy nineteen, that's john belushi (the table is the table), Wednesday, 9 June 2021 21:51 (two years ago) link
I was thinking about it too, and that was the only reason I could summon
it just has to be britain though and we don't get much snow in blighty (or do anything to prepare for what we do get)
― ใMyst1kOblivi0nใ (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 9 June 2021 21:53 (two years ago) link
If itโs ERD rather than BRO, it could be Birmingham, I guess.

which line would that be on? i found a page listing all railway bridges in the uk, but it's organised by line (and pdfs so not searchable without having downloaded them first)
― koogs, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 22:18 (two years ago) link
the roof railings (and general roof design for snow) are discussed here https://www.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/comments/a8y39d/eli5_why_are_so_many_german_roofs_built_very/
bit surprised to see them in strasbourg tbh. can't imagine they get much snow there.
― ๐ ๐๐ข๐จ (caek), Thursday, 10 June 2021 05:42 (two years ago) link
Could easily be brum, or any other city with large victorian brick infrastructure. Surprisingly hard to find a road that follows the curve of an elevated railway like that though, and the old fence at the top and the overgrowth suggest it's not an actual in-use railway line.
― I was born anxious, here's how to do it. (ledge), Thursday, 10 June 2021 07:28 (two years ago) link
Its two bridges isn't it, not one
― cherry blossom, Thursday, 10 June 2021 07:42 (two years ago) link
Which means lines diverging, which would make sense if this is close to a station
― cherry blossom, Thursday, 10 June 2021 07:44 (two years ago) link
I am not totally convinced the main wall taking up much of the picture is an elevated railway but I can't really justify that past saying the cast iron fencing seems odd for a railway (even disused) and I'd kinda expect to see arches in a railway bridge. I realise this is not much help.
― Tim, Thursday, 10 June 2021 08:43 (two years ago) link
(I mean it's quite likely it's a raised piece of railway, I'm just not sure it is)
― Tim, Thursday, 10 June 2021 08:54 (two years ago) link
if only those letters were slightly more legible; going on koogs' station code theory i've been going through this list: https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations_destinations/48541.aspx (alphabetical by name not code) but no joy.
