2 has Carvey doing an impeccable Cary Grant impression, but 1 has Alice Cooper explaining how Milwaukee got it's name. Damn, this is a tough one.

elvis i had never seen any of those! didn't know it pre-dated SNL, although now it makes sense. to my perspective watching, growing up, it arrived as a fully formed idea, so it's pretty neat to see how different the wayne character started, even while still maintaining many very recognizable catchphrases and physical behaviors from the beginning.

Crucial Taunt is such a shit band name that I assumed it was a joke, but the other shoe never dropped

Haha my sister always pronounced Milwaukee like that but I didn't realize what she was referencing for years. Even tho I'd seen WW a few times.

Somehow I've never seen the 2nd one. And I was a huge early 90s SNL fan on general. I even had the WW book! I guess I'd heard negative reviews of the sequel.

may go 2 for sentimental reasons. i think i somehow saw it before the first film through no fault of my own. possibly also my first introduction into the weird and wonderful world of walken.

The story of the Dieter movie is fascinating

The movie was all set up to film in the summer of 2000 with first-time director Bo Welch, producers Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, and actors Will Ferrell, Jack Black, and David Hasselhoff signed on and millions spent on preproduction costs. Myers, unhappy with the script (which he co-wrote), backed out of the project and relinquished his $20 million salary, causing Howard and Grazer’s company Imagine and the studio, Universal, to slap him with a pair of multimillion dollar lawsuits. Myers filed a countersuit and said the studio was trying to rush him into filming a “fundamentally flawed” script and that he didn’t want to “cheat moviegoers who pay their hard-earned money to see my work.” Steven Spielberg, who wasn’t involved in the project, even stepped in to try to get everyone to reach an agreement without lawyers but to no avail.

Ha I didn’t know that. When I was in eighth grade I dressed as Dieter for Halloween. It was kind of a deep cut even at the time.

Can't believe anyone would plump for 2 over 1, 2 has it's moments(most involving Danny Brown) but was clearly thrown together and you can tell no-one's heart was really in it.

My sister and I were massively into the first film, we recorded it one when it was on TV over Christmas and watched it over and over. I was really hyped for the sequel but there was a lingering feeling of disappointment and watching it again recently I could see why, it's pretty much a bunch of slapped-together scenes and gags looking for a decent plot that isn't there.

i agree completely, the fact that myers had written another script that couldn't be used and cobbled together a new one last minute makes the sequel make more sense to me now

Like just how huge Myers was at the time, following up three Austin Powers movies and three Shrek movies, two of the most beloved original characters in forever. Plus Myers being like a serious art-house film nerd into Fellini and Truffaut and whatever. Plus like the goodwill to get cameos from everyone, including John Oliver, Stephen Colbert and Samantha Bee and Kanye West. And it was so bad that he refused to talk about it for years, it's fascinating

Myers also used to do Wayne on local community cable stations in the mid-80s (even lower-budget than those City Limits clips). He appeared on one comedy show with a live audience, and literally no-one was laughing.
I can't venture an opinion on his films because he is literally the Anti-Comedian to me, I become paralyzed with embarrassment for him every time he starts one of his routines.

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 02:05 (two years ago) link

When an anticomedian comes into direct contact with a comedian is there an explosive release of cosmic energy? or do they just make the audience really uneasy?

Anti-Comedy sucks everything funny out of the environs.

Wayne's World 2 has some funny moments, and it is underrated, but it just copies way too many jokes from the first movie to ever consider voting it over the original. That being said I do still get a chuckle of out "Old Man Fashioning a Kayak out of a Log" and "A great big bloody bengal tiger"
