Worst ever festival line up?

There's another sad story in The Dirt, where Nikki Sixx goes on L.A. radio in 1994 and says he's handing out free concert tickets on the street. Two kids show up.

I am also extraordinarily curious as to how safety and insurance work for a wrestling bear attraction that promises a cash prize to "anyone who can pin him"

No idea, but here's more on the poor bear. Gonna guess this guy was fewer than 6 degrees of separation away from Joe Exotic.

I don't get it. So, it's a bunch of Peloton workouts set to different music playlists? Which is what Peloton usually is/does, but they're calling it a ... festival? Um, OK.

I'm imagining Alice Coltrane pieces recast as 80s montage rock now, it's not pretty

There's this weird 80's themed 5-day festival in Ostend, Belgium at the end of the Summer (scroll down a bit for names - Howard Jones! East 17! The Jacksons! T'Pau! Technotronic!) - wtf?

“Snap & Technotronic” no less, are they performing As One?

East 17 have plenty of fans on ILM:

Who are Shwayze and are they really bigger than Dishwalla to old people? (I know most bands are bigger than Dishwalla).

don't know who Poncho Sanchez, Shwayze or Dishwalla are, but they are instant entries on the "bands you won't check out because of their name" list

Checked out their Wikipedia pages, Poncho Sanchez could be ok, thought would be a novelty rock group. Others do not sound at all promising.

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 7 July 2021 22:21 (two years ago) link

Poncho Sanchez is a household name in Latin jazz...or so I thought....anyway i thought that was a cool booking lol

Seriously!

Also, Dishwalla once headlined the Fells Point Fun Fest. I was there to see Too Much Joy, who were the penultimate band before Dishwalla. Due to the festival running behind and an apparently precise starting time demand by Dishwalla, Too Much Joy only got to play 4 songs. So it brings me a small amount of joy to see them so far up this chaotic festival bill.

two weeks pass...

OK, so Lollapalooza is (I think) next week. That means the people least concerned about covid and least likely to be vaccinated against covid will be congregating densely in the midst of a dramatic spike in infections. Supposedly requiring proof of vaccination or a negative test, and those unvaxxed are supposed to wear a mask (yeah right), so what can go wrong?

I like DeRo's take:

“If you’ve got anyone at home you could be exposing, you should not go. Eat the ticket,” DeRogatis told The Post.

jesus, when too short, juvie, ying yang and mike jones are on the second to last line...

I heard the prices for that were pretty insane, especially for a single day fest.

I wonder how many original members are on that bill? And I'm including Joe Piscopo, who by all accounts is an enormous member.

It's just Dolenz, I read an article about it last week.

Just Mike Love for the Beach Boys (although Bruce Johnston and rumours of Blondie Chapman).

Is John Cowsill playing with the Beach Boys? (He did a few years ago.) They could add The Cowsills to the lineup!

The final show of that lineup is in November apparently.

Cowsill has been full-time in the Beach Boys for 21 years.

Nez and Dolenz are sometimes both in the Monkees these days, but I doubt Nesmith would play a pandemic cruise.

(It was the combination of modernity and obscurity that made me caveat the Surfrajettes!)

Astroworld Festival update: 8 confirmed deaths, many others injured during Travis Scott concert

About two dozen people were rushed to Houston hospitals and at least 11 were in cardiac arrest, HFD Chief Pena said. The victims were as young as 10 years old.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 6 November 2021 13:20 (two years ago) link

God it's like a much worse version of the Pearl Jam show incident. Horrifying.

Cool Im An Situation (Neanderthal), Saturday, 6 November 2021 13:29 (two years ago) link

Not good news to wake up to.

I literally live 5 minutes from the concert site, close enough that last I could hear the fest and the music from inside my place. I was watching the news when this was happening, so I didn't hear said music stopping, and whatever initial local news coverage was a little after the fact.

My heart breaks for everybody. It'd been a treat this week watching the news leading up to the show, seeing coverage of all the charity stuff Scott's been doing around town, and then finally the reports from earlier yesterday from the opening of the festival, all these excited concert-goers getting interviewed and such.

This is hard time for Hip Hop fans in Houston. Just a couple weeks ago there was another show--forget the act, one of those new guys--that was being put on at an indoor arena in the same complex as this fest. People were in line for hours on a hot day when a sudden rain storm came up and eventually the gates were opened early to get everyone out of that, only to be left waiting for couple more hours inside before an announcement that the show had been cancelled. A minor riot ensued with skirmishes w/the police/security, and tramplings (although iirc no fatalities).

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 6 November 2021 16:42 (two years ago) link

First thing this morning, I turned on CNN during an interview with a woman who had barely escaped the crush: she said a countdown began on the screen, 30 minutes before "he" (presumably Scott) appeared---as it got to 0, she told her boyfriend she couldn't breathe, passed out, woke up sitting in a relatively secure area. He'd had the crowd pass her overhead, and somehow they were able to do this, despite the surges: true crowdsurfing, 'til finally a security guard got her. She's a nurse, and observed that the "medics" (quotes audible) couldn't seem to do anything but apply icepacks to victims; "he didn't know how to find or take a pulse" etc. She said she's okay, just still trying to absorb all this (neither she not interviewer seemed to know about any deaths yet, though was mention of somebody in critical condition)
