Also, agreed on this

but this is hard because if a band has a lousy drummer I usually don’t like them in the first place

This makes me think of Robbie Fulks wondering: "I don’t know what authority decreed that Gordon Lightfoot’s music, like all other commercially viable music these past 70 years, must have non-tonal banging in the form of a drumset mic-ed six or ten ways[...]A non-creative drummer is very often like a brash flight attendant standing over you and explaining how seatbelts buckle."

Thinking about what Oasis would sound like without a drummer led me to this video - all the comments about Noel Gallagher's virtuosity are kind of amazing:

Ahah N. Gallagher and virtuosity in the same sentence. He might be the worst « famous » guitarist. He’s guy playing alone on the beach/in a park level...

And as for their first drummer, he was « limited » but the basic madchester beats were less annoying than the drum rolls/breaks that followed...

Planck Generation (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 2 July 2021 16:46 (two years ago) link

that's kind of unfair though - maybe he has to play that way to make the rest sound in tune?

StanM, Friday, 2 July 2021 17:04 (two years ago) link

I imagine this is the result of multiple takes, with the producer or engineer reminding him that the tempo is actually faster than he thinks it is at the end of each one.

Deflatormouse, Friday, 2 July 2021 17:54 (two years ago) link

His guitar playing always sounds so lackadaisical in the mix, it's surprising to hear him push himself.

I was at that show! ilxor cbesinger's band opened that night

Really? Cause I don’t think there was an opening act at all, just a film of glitched footage of Led Zeppelin.

And yeah, it wasn’t immediately after the break up cause I think I had already read about it on the internets.

oh ok yeah different show then because this one was right after

i'm not sure how the thread made it this far without mentioning the sacking of ex-radiohead stickman phil selway

The general media blackout is more perplexing still

Deflatormouse, Friday, 2 July 2021 19:35 (two years ago) link

3 members of radiohead have been sacked, you'd expect p4k or someone to notice.

Deflatormouse, Friday, 2 July 2021 19:37 (two years ago) link

I've heard of lazy journalism but damn

Deflatormouse, Friday, 2 July 2021 19:37 (two years ago) link

Gay Dad was a lot better without their drummer too

StanM, Friday, 2 July 2021 19:42 (two years ago) link

3 members of Rhead are gone? who's left?

Thom Yorke's nose

everyone except for jonny (and thom, obviously) were sacked after they realized they could just play as a trio with tom skinner.

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Friday, 2 July 2021 19:57 (two years ago) link

their debut was a few weeks ago at digital glastonbury

spacemen 3 and spectrum seem to resent having to use drums on their albums, even most of their rockier stuff is like “ok bass drum, tambourine, some crash symbols every now and then and were good”. maybe it’s part of why the relentless drum machining on “revolution” sounds so shocking and intense

brimstead, Friday, 2 July 2021 19:59 (two years ago) link

what I saw about Radiohead was that it's a side project called Smile

Don't you believe it, they did a succesful trial run several years ago with a cr78 before recruiting skinner

I liked the drumming on earlier Tangerine Dream records, but it was a good idea not to use any on Zeit.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 2 July 2021 20:22 (two years ago) link

The drummer was still in the group, though.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 2 July 2021 20:22 (two years ago) link

yeah, he hit the sack for that record.

Could the poster Karl 'Sticks' Malone please tell us about their experience of being abandoned at a gas station by Portugal. The man? What was that like?

Deflatormouse, Saturday, 3 July 2021 13:37 (two years ago) link

How would you rate the other drummers Portugal. The man have left at a bus station, Sticks?

Deflatormouse, Saturday, 3 July 2021 13:40 (two years ago) link

i wasn't the first drummer for P.tm. i found them at an after party for Relix. i was very out of it and confused as to what their group was. it was all the way new orleans with them before the beignets finally won out and i had to go

Z_TBD (Karl Malone), Saturday, 3 July 2021 16:52 (two years ago) link

they were definitely better off without me, i disagreed with their entire direction in retrospect, although they are VERY nice

Suicide never needed a drummer and that’s explicitly what they were going for.

Elvis Telecom, Sunday, 4 July 2021 02:50 (two years ago) link

I like the drum machine on The Jesus & Mary Chain's Darklands but I wouldn't say it made the band better.
