I get it, I just don't see Boston or Miami ready to get rid of a piece/name that at least justifies the trade the way Philly is with Simmons. Plus, Dame's age/contract matches well with the number of miles potentially left on Embiid's body (i.e. 4 years at best).

I mean if Boston can make the trade without giving up Jaylen Brown then more power to them, but if they trade him that doesn't move the needle nearly as much.

you will find no bigger jaylen brown fan than me but if brown for lillard were an option you'd do more than think about it, you'd think long and hard about it because lillard is that good and would be a really nice fit with the rest of their roster.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 17 July 2021 02:21 (two years ago) link

I guess if Boston decided they wanted to move Brown, he would be more enticing than Simmons. I don't think Boston is there yet, whereas Philly is all, "where do you want your brand new Ben Simmons delivered?"

Carlos Santana & Mahavishnu Rob Thomas (PBKR), Saturday, 17 July 2021 02:31 (two years ago) link

If the blazers trade lillard for Simmons they will draft high for a while

Matt Armstrong, Saturday, 17 July 2021 02:36 (two years ago) link

yeah, thats not a play-in roster at all, that's missing the playoffs for a minute until they get simmons to figure out what he does

class project pat (m bison), Saturday, 17 July 2021 02:40 (two years ago) link

ive assumed brown was off limits but if he's not it kinda makes sense for both teams. altho what else does boston have bc that team feels not deep.

class project pat (m bison), Saturday, 17 July 2021 02:42 (two years ago) link

celtics def do not want to trade brown but yeah if a player as good as dame became available they would just have to think about it

lag∞n, Saturday, 17 July 2021 02:45 (two years ago) link

this isn't a "we want to trade brown" thing, this is a "we can get damian lillard???" thing. and i think the odds of it are miniscule but again, if you could, you would have to think L&A about it

call all destroyer, Saturday, 17 July 2021 02:47 (two years ago) link

sorry, L&H

call all destroyer, Saturday, 17 July 2021 02:47 (two years ago) link

if I were Boston I'd probably make that trade. the question is what does Portland want exactly? they're sort of in NBA purgatory right now

frogbs, Saturday, 17 July 2021 02:57 (two years ago) link

the thing about trading brown for dame is because of his age its a very all in now trade where youd need to put together a championship level roster basically immediately, where if you keep brown and tatum together you have more time to build around them, on the other hand in todays crazy nba really all the time you have is the length of your current contracts and often tbh not even that

lag∞n, Saturday, 17 July 2021 03:05 (two years ago) link

also theres just good vibes to keeping your dudes together

lag∞n, Saturday, 17 July 2021 03:07 (two years ago) link

i personally hope they do not do that trade tho tbh it could be pretty cool

lag∞n, Saturday, 17 July 2021 03:11 (two years ago) link

i really don't want Dame in the East, sorry

frogbs, Saturday, 17 July 2021 03:14 (two years ago) link

the first time I see dame hit a super cool game winning three I am gonna break some stuff in here lemme tell ya

Clay, Saturday, 17 July 2021 03:27 (two years ago) link

should prob go ahead and get rid of all my stuff so I can’t break it

Clay, Saturday, 17 July 2021 03:27 (two years ago) link

yeah, thats not a play-in roster at all, that's missing the playoffs for a minute until they get simmons to figure out what he does

i think a team with CJ, ben simmons, covington, nurkic etc would be “competitive” for the 10th seed in the west… i count 8 teams at minimum i’d consider worse than that theoretical team in the entire league. if you’re the 8th worst team maybe the lottery balls roll your way one year but the bulls and magic are great examples of what spending a half decade picking between like 5 and 8 usually gets you.

to me if you trade dame then you might as well trade CJ too, at which point there’s no real use in having ben simmons. you’d be getting him for 4 years aka two pretty useless seasons before he’s prob demanding a trade to a contender himself. if your own picks over that time netted you, like, wendell carter jr and aaron gordon or jonathan isaac and coby white what exactly did you accomplish.

i feel like aside from the daryl morey angle this had to be part of the rockets calculation in trading harden. you’d prob rather just have the boat load of picks, be incredibly bad for a few years, try and get a top 2 pick that you can then keep for 8 years or whatever on a pretty reasonable salary instead of trading for another team’s ex no 1 pick who can leave or force his way out before you can even fully rebuild.

i don’t love to advocate for processing bcuz there’s an element of nihilism to it that feels cheap to me, this is why i want the blazers to just ride it out with dame even if they never win anything. but if you’re gonna trade him i just think logically you’re pushing yourself down a path that you might as well go all in on

J0rdan S., Saturday, 17 July 2021 05:26 (two years ago) link

a jaylen brown trade is more interesting to me bcuz it almost necessitates the CJ trade, and he might be someone who would be inclined to re-sign with portland, he did choose to go to cal over kentucky and UNC. he’s also easier to build around than simmons and there’s basically volatility to his projection, you know you’re getting a really really good player.

whether boston should do it is a pretty fascinating question. i do think dame and tatum give you an immediate chance at making the finals out of the east, they could prob get back covington or nurkic or some other useful piece off of the blazers too. having two guys who can give you 50 points in the playoffs is not something many teams could contend with imo, i think it puts you right up there with the nets and the bucks. i dunno if it’s a guaranteed enough title contender tho to get rid of jaylen, it’s really tough

celtics acquiring an undersized star scorer... how could this possibly go wrong

micah, Saturday, 17 July 2021 10:35 (two years ago) link

celtics have needed the same thing each of the past few offseasons and it is not that

ciderpress, Saturday, 17 July 2021 11:32 (two years ago) link

what have they needed

call all destroyer, Saturday, 17 July 2021 11:42 (two years ago) link

btw im stoked for marcus smart full time point guard hes a good facilitator and hes got such good size and physicality defending other point guards, where hes a lil on the small side playing the two

lag∞n, Saturday, 17 July 2021 12:18 (two years ago) link

in spite of all the rumors and speculation flying around concerning dame, my money is on his being a blazer next season. if the blazers don't improve to another trip to the WCF and do respectably there, then I think dame will be seriously mulling his next move. he'll calculate it down to the last degree, but if there's no way to jump to a stronger contender with his current contract, he'll sit tight. the moment his player option year comes up, he's gone, no matter if it means taking the vet minimum to get his shot in the Finals.

it is to laugh, like so, ha! (Aimless), Saturday, 17 July 2021 18:36 (two years ago) link

That’s generally what happens, a trade should obviously occur and we have to have a year of purgatory. I don’t like this!

the trade everyone was waiting for

BREAKING: Memphis is finalizing a trade to send Jonas Valanciunas and 2021 Nos. 17 and 51 picks to New Orleans for Steven Adams, Eric Bledsoe, 2021 picks Nos. 10 and 40 and a protected 2022 first-round pick via the Lakers, sources tell ESPN.

ciderpress, Monday, 26 July 2021 20:33 (two years ago) link

like this for nola. that lakers pick is probably bottom 5 next year, and theres not much of a talent drop off from 10 to 17 this year. they dump two large salaries, get back a better fit at C, and still have a quality 1RP.

class project pat (m bison), Monday, 26 July 2021 20:36 (two years ago) link

altho theyre apparently pursuing lowry so lol idk

class project pat (m bison), Monday, 26 July 2021 20:36 (two years ago) link

yeah i’m not sure i get this from memphis’ perspective. taking on adams and bledsoe and losing jonas to move up 7 spots and get a lakers first seems like a lot. the best version of their team prob has JJJ at 5 and bledsoe isn’t bad depth but he’s also not on the floor for you at the end of important games. they must really like a few guys who they think will be there at 10, or they’re angling to do something with the higher pick and extra first. that last scenario would seem most sensible to me tho not sure who is out there exactly. grizz don’t feel like a team that needs another super young player

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 July 2021 20:46 (two years ago) link

This trade has been swirling for a few days in different iterations as we reported yesterday. Many around the NBA believe Memphis will look to target Josh Giddey at No. 10, if he's available. That's one of the reasons we put him in that slot yesterday: https://t.co/VEdy8p5uV6 https://t.co/iVuJhUwwEb

class project pat (m bison), Monday, 26 July 2021 20:47 (two years ago) link

it’s good for the pelicans to get off adams but they don’t really seem like they have much of a plan. having to dump picks to move a guy you extended less than a year ago not really a ringing endorsement for your front office

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 July 2021 20:51 (two years ago) link

yeah theyre in panic mode to keep zion happy. it might work, though!

class project pat (m bison), Monday, 26 July 2021 20:51 (two years ago) link

it’s really bizarre to watch them repeat all the mistakes they made with anthony davis so soon after having to trade anthony davis. the omer asik era was not that long ago!

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 July 2021 20:56 (two years ago) link

i understand they feel pressure from zion but i also don’t think you can win a playoff series with him until he figures out how to play defense as a big man & that doesn’t seem on the horizon so i feel like the entire concept of putting a “contending” team around him is pretty foolish

J0rdan S., Monday, 26 July 2021 20:59 (two years ago) link

Adams was just a terrible terrible fit next to Zion. Val can pop out to 15 feet and that’s gonna help a lot.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 26 July 2021 21:11 (two years ago) link

Val is nice (I think he should play 35 mpg a game after all) but the Grizzlies’ best players are super young and getting more draft capital here is worth it. Honestly I think this is a nice trade for both teams.

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 26 July 2021 21:13 (two years ago) link

if they dont get giddey they can grab moody on the wing. theyll get someone who can play right away.

class project pat (m bison), Monday, 26 July 2021 21:13 (two years ago) link

Would be surprised if giddey doesn’t last to 10 but I also am very low on him

Matt Armstrong, Monday, 26 July 2021 21:14 (two years ago) link

shooting? or D? both?
