Does mocking up the 'cash & carry' logo in the back there and doing a reverse image search count as cheating? If so I'll keep my counsel :)

Not in my book it doesn't. If I were prepared to go to that much trouble I'd post the answer & take the credit.

yeah that's exactly the sort of effort which should be rewarded

is that a special version of the logo? (we don't have that over here)

StanM, Monday, 2 August 2021 09:23 (two years ago) link

It's Ulan-Ude in Siberia. Good old yandex.com came up with the goods, and it wasn't the first result that helped, as I found after looking at every sports stadium in Mongolia.

What is going on in the stadium (see also the cash and carry sign on the left): https://goo.gl/maps/4VLu1p4jquZ6sKVi6

Thought it was a fool's errand to look for the second image, was going to give up after my third try but then got lucky: https://goo.gl/maps/uBarJHdLzPRAKXz58

nice one! VIPs get to stand in the penalty box, eh?

StanM, Monday, 2 August 2021 10:50 (two years ago) link

Ulan-Ude it is, I thought it might go faster from the stadium seat flag colours. The two images were too good not to post though

cherry blossom, Monday, 2 August 2021 18:07 (two years ago) link

Yep, good pics. The Google car does get to some interesting places. Seriously though I would like to know the provenance of some of the images; A 360 image of a sparsely attended Buddhist festival in the middle of Siberia I guess is not too incredible but a random girl in a hut?

Believe me, grow a lemon tree. (ledge), Monday, 2 August 2021 18:36 (two years ago) link

Also noticed they have two stadiums next door to each other like Dundee

Girl in a hut is such a good shot!

cherry blossom, Monday, 2 August 2021 18:44 (two years ago) link

Users can submit 360 degree "photo spheres" to Google street view. I think there's an Android phone feature.

UK

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 4 August 2021 13:15 (two years ago) link

Up North, I'm guessing

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 4 August 2021 13:17 (two years ago) link

Just joined GeoGuessr thanks to this thread and those Tom Davies youtubes. Won a Distance-based Battle Royale straight away but just guessing the country before 9 other randos is proving much harder (finished second in my first game but have done less well ever since). The 'Country Streak' game with no time limit is a nice way to ease into it though.

nashwan, Wednesday, 4 August 2021 14:38 (two years ago) link

I don't think I've ever seen row houses with angled roofs like that before. Though from Google image search, they seem to be prevalent in the UK.

o. nate, Wednesday, 4 August 2021 15:20 (two years ago) link

That looks extremely Belgian to me

StanM, Wednesday, 4 August 2021 16:02 (two years ago) link

could be anywhere in Belgium though, not a clue

StanM, Wednesday, 4 August 2021 16:12 (two years ago) link

It looks too clean to be in the UK!

Tim, Wednesday, 4 August 2021 16:21 (two years ago) link

Car is on the right, so not UK? Street is too wide to be a one-way.

Sidewalks not much higher than the street, so maybe a place with little rain?

nickn, Wednesday, 4 August 2021 16:45 (two years ago) link

there are no rules about what direction your car must face when you park it in the UK (unlike the US, and like most of the rest of the world). so that's not dispositive.

but the above ground power cables and flat roofs make me think this could be the US, not the UK.

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Wednesday, 4 August 2021 18:18 (two years ago) link

neither the buildings nor the sidewalk look US to this USian

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 4 August 2021 18:19 (two years ago) link

Above ground cables could be phone lines, still common in the UK.

Believe me, grow a lemon tree. (ledge), Wednesday, 4 August 2021 18:22 (two years ago) link

defer to calzino on that but those are heavy guage twisted cables, which would be unusual for phone lines IIUC.

i agree the buildings look extremely weird for the US. but they aren't right for the UK either imo. the argument for US is the flat roofs. argument against US is the lack of a stoop.

the lack of double yellow lines on a tight corner like this also seems wrong for the UK.

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Wednesday, 4 August 2021 18:26 (two years ago) link

the siding (clapboard?) on the end terraces also seems wrong for the UK.

last thing: you do get cars like that in the US obviously, but they are much more common in europe.

i have no idea!

this looks like montreal or something to me. definitely north america

γ€ŠMyst1kOblivi0n》 (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 4 August 2021 18:50 (two years ago) link

I've never been to Belgium, but the link StanM posted does look extremely similar to the original photo, both in terms of buildings and the style of the sidewalks.

o. nate, Wednesday, 4 August 2021 18:51 (two years ago) link

roofs are wrong for Montreal, though I did wonder about France when I first saw it

rob, Wednesday, 4 August 2021 18:54 (two years ago) link

if it was just the two facades on the left, I would def think N America
if it was just the rest of the photo I would def think Europe

rob, Wednesday, 4 August 2021 18:57 (two years ago) link

I'll go with whatever StanM says tbh

randomly street-viewing some Belgian cities and it does seem like a strong choice

rob, Wednesday, 4 August 2021 19:05 (two years ago) link

Liège looked like an especially solid candidate but idk how some of you find the exact spot

rob, Wednesday, 4 August 2021 19:16 (two years ago) link

Some places in Quebec look like this but the sidewalks don’t look right.

Bo Burzum (Boring, Maryland), Wednesday, 4 August 2021 19:20 (two years ago) link

stanm's link looks very, very similar.

I take back my assertion that it's the UK: it does feel pretty Belgian, or that corner of Europe in any case. Terrace houses and those window curtains made me think north of England, but the door on that very small narrow terrace doesn't look very British. There's a particular kind of cladding on the walls on either side of the road - that might narrow things down a bit.

Zelda Zonk, Thursday, 5 August 2021 03:56 (two years ago) link

the slate tiles? I thought that was pretty common too - still no clue where in Belgium to actually look, though.

Another perspective

cherry blossom, Thursday, 5 August 2021 09:03 (two years ago) link

Still very much in Belgium (orange back on traffic signs too), but what is THAT thing? hmmmm

StanM, Thursday, 5 August 2021 09:11 (two years ago) link

oh, is it a train station?

StanM, Thursday, 5 August 2021 09:14 (two years ago) link

Looks hilly, so if it is Belgium then is it Liege?

Neil S, Thursday, 5 August 2021 09:17 (two years ago) link

yeah, more wallonia than flanders

StanM, Thursday, 5 August 2021 09:18 (two years ago) link

OK definitely not UK. Could be Belgium but could also be France up near the Belgian border like Lille or something - balcony and blinds look a bit French.

Zelda Zonk, Thursday, 5 August 2021 09:21 (two years ago) link

North of France: don't think the traffic signs have orange back sides there

No, those are belgian plates (white background with red letters/numbers and the blue B to the left + street sign with blue background and white letters) - I'm still 100% thinking Belgium but that raised train stop with the weird roof... NO idea. Damn!
