the new cosmic balearic beats is like 100x better than the first

space cowboy (san frandisco), Thursday, 16 July 2009 18:56 (fourteen years ago) link

I really liked the first volume. I started listening to it again a few weeks ago but I can see where the criticisms levelled at it on the Disco Horror blog are coming from

groovypanda, Thursday, 16 July 2009 20:40 (fourteen years ago) link

there's a ton of discussion upthread about the first volume. i don't remember specifics but everyone else kinda decided they were disappointed- i think i was saying that i preferred it to fred deakin's 'nu balearica' comp on ministry of sound but nobody agreed, etc.

psychgawsple, Thursday, 16 July 2009 22:16 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't even agree with that anymore tho ha

psychgawsple, Thursday, 16 July 2009 22:20 (fourteen years ago) link

The Milky Disco series is my favourite I think.

Desmond Decca Aitkenhead (Matt DC), Thursday, 16 July 2009 22:35 (fourteen years ago) link

it's not that i hated Cosmic Balearic Beats Vol 1, but it just kinda fell flat on the mix side. wasn't bad though. but the second one is really rad. I feel similarly about the Milky Disco series. Vol 2 >>> Vol 1, but Vol 1 isn't bad

07. Premier Rang - Zoé et Heine

there's a new 12" by them on IDIB that I saw at other music the other day but I didn't know what they were all about, anyone heard?

dmr, Friday, 17 July 2009 03:52 (fourteen years ago) link

I had a hard time listening to Fred Deakin's Nu Balearica (CD 2). Is it just me or it really is boring?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 17 July 2009 04:14 (fourteen years ago) link

balearic is boring

bong hitzvah (jaxon), Friday, 17 July 2009 05:20 (fourteen years ago) link

I've only heard that IDIB track, but it's really nice. Starts with static-y rain sound fx, kicks in with a kind of motorik-y beat, lazer sound FX start flyin' around...
You can hear it at the end of a mix Mike Simonetti did for Diesel radio. Come to think of it, Premier Rang did a mix for the IDIB blog that's pretty great.

Metro Video Centers, Friday, 17 July 2009 13:09 (fourteen years ago) link

(that said, there's nothing Balearic about it, as far as I can tell - it's much more 80s Italian horror movie soundtrack stuff)

Metro Video Centers, Friday, 17 July 2009 13:10 (fourteen years ago) link

milky disco is the best comp in this vein by a long shot imo!!

mizzell, Wednesday, 22 July 2009 15:25 (fourteen years ago) link

Same here, I've been playin that Washed Out track all day !
This is exactly what I want to listen to these days, this kind of lo-fi meets nu-balearica sound.

anyone else dig that tv scene cover from earlier in the year by discosession? looks like copies are going for quite a bit already... http://www.discogs.com/Discossession-Feat-Rie-Lambdoll-TV-Scene/release/1708572, but i found that they have some left here for the original but still ridiculous price of $20 + shipping. you can hear the original version on the (really fuckn awesome) beats in space mix dj kza did a week or so back, and the soft rocks remix feat. kathy diamond here.

psychgawsple, Saturday, 25 July 2009 06:57 (fourteen years ago) link

the other crue-l release this year- stoned green apples 'sugar k'- is also great

Currently listening to this great great great Ronny & Renzo mix from April on the Cosmic Disco site:

http://www.cosmicdisco.co.uk/2009/04/15/ronny-renzo-exclusive-mix-interview

I love these guys' sound, so lethargic and ominous and dense. I wish they'd do more! I still play their djhistory mix from last year all the time.

Tim F, Saturday, 25 July 2009 10:14 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah the QV remix of ronny & renzo is one of my favorite late-late-late-night listenings

max, Saturday, 25 July 2009 11:27 (fourteen years ago) link

the mungo jetset rmx of big smack and flies is great too

max, Saturday, 25 July 2009 11:27 (fourteen years ago) link

^^^ Love that but the original is kinda underrated as a result of how good the remix is.

Tim F, Saturday, 25 July 2009 11:31 (fourteen years ago) link

they have similar sounds, r&r and mungo, humid & dense

max, Saturday, 25 July 2009 11:34 (fourteen years ago) link

Yes, I'd go so far as to say that mungolian jet set are at their best when they're close to R&R. Love that humid sound.

Tim F, Saturday, 25 July 2009 11:41 (fourteen years ago) link

dunno if anyones mentioned this yet but the new sorcerer album is his best yet

max, Saturday, 25 July 2009 11:51 (fourteen years ago) link

feels more fully-formed, less like a collection of half-hearted jams

max, Saturday, 25 July 2009 11:52 (fourteen years ago) link

agreed. i've only heard aboaut 2/3 of the tracks on it thus far but definitely good, funky stuff! new windsurf material is sounding like their best yet as well...

mikebee (BATTAGS), Tuesday, 28 July 2009 19:36 (fourteen years ago) link

"raydio (play it)" is pretty awesome.

also still can't get enough of that kza beats in space, so many of my favorites wound up on there

psychgawsple, Tuesday, 28 July 2009 20:04 (fourteen years ago) link

that didn't work for me

started last night off proper balearic with jon & vangelis "state of independence" as per KZAs inspiration

space cowboy (san frandisco), Friday, 31 July 2009 22:15 (fourteen years ago) link

jesus i just read that and realized how english it sounded.

properly balearic? balearically proper?

space cowboy (san frandisco), Friday, 31 July 2009 22:16 (fourteen years ago) link

and then i played mike francis' survivor but got embarrassed and turned it off :(

jaxon, Friday, 31 July 2009 22:17 (fourteen years ago) link

totally not embarassing imo...

i fucking love this song, but didn't think it'd go over in that bar. it's kinda douchey

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Sunday, 2 August 2009 10:34 (fourteen years ago) link

^^^ the best thing on that 'le disco' comp imo

psychgawsple, Monday, 3 August 2009 02:32 (fourteen years ago) link

the whole comp is awesome. i just listened to it only once, but i can say there's no dud in that bunch.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Monday, 3 August 2009 03:10 (fourteen years ago) link

seriously, it's like a whos-who of producers, and nobody really disappoints

space cowboy (san frandisco), Monday, 3 August 2009 18:38 (fourteen years ago) link

they say that the original music on tele music remixed haven't been released yet. so how come there's an arpadys song in there (monkey star)?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Saturday, 8 August 2009 09:03 (fourteen years ago) link

Holy crap... the Montée album. I think Lindstrom has actually just gone all out and signed an actual 80s soft rock band. I only gave it a cursory listen at low volume because I was a bit embarassed about my housemates overhearing it.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 22:45 (fourteen years ago) link

since ive started listening to this shit slightly embarrassing has become my bread and butter

max, Tuesday, 11 August 2009 22:56 (fourteen years ago) link

Is "Bones" with the Way of the Ancients remix out on digital yet?

plazzTT, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 13:02 (fourteen years ago) link

try the hype machine....

my opinionation (Hamildan), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 14:14 (fourteen years ago) link

think 20JFG has an extremely loud mp3 of "Bones" posted. which will be fine, since playing out a picture disc will sound fairly shitty.
