the mural and surface parking vibe makes that looks a lot like broadway in chinatown in los angeles ...

but the air conditioners are wrong for north america, and so is the dinky little truck and the licence plates, and i can't find the spot in LA on streetview. so yeah i think this is asia.

those A/C units look like Singapore but rest of picture looks too downscale.

that's not my post, Wednesday, 11 August 2021 19:17 (two years ago) link

I was thinking LA's Chinatown too, maybe Bernard St (that leads to the northbound 110 fwy), but the license plate on the silver car looks like the wide, skinny ones that they do in Europe. I'm wondering if it's a European Chinatown.

nickn, Wednesday, 11 August 2021 19:47 (two years ago) link

right? it looks chinoise rather than chinese.

Looks like something you might see in a Southeast Asian country. I think Penang was a good guess. Reminds me of city street scenes I've seen in Indonesia.

o. nate, Wednesday, 11 August 2021 20:43 (two years ago) link

My first thought was Malaysia or Indonesia but I did wonder about it being a Chinatown outside of Asia but I got more of an air of South America rather than Europe if so

There's a Malaysia or Indonesia feel about that one but definitely still in wild guess territory

cherry blossom, Thursday, 12 August 2021 08:30 (two years ago) link

what ARE we looking at though? why are the benches in the middle of the field? what are the wooden things around the field?

StanM, Thursday, 12 August 2021 09:31 (two years ago) link

wooden things look like a fence.

that raised bricked pathway to the right hasn't been weeded in sometime.

those streetlights look wild--possibly solar powered?

a (waterface), Thursday, 12 August 2021 12:41 (two years ago) link

is that a police car? a blue and yellow checked police car?

koogs, Thursday, 12 August 2021 16:16 (two years ago) link

To the right of the white structure holding the packets of smoked mackerel? I thought that was a taxi cab, but it could be police

cherry blossom, Thursday, 12 August 2021 16:40 (two years ago) link

yeah, it has something on the roof that looks like a blue light and the colours, albeit through the fence, just reminded me of those yellow and blue police cars (which are a british thing going by google image search, although nothing else there particularly says british to me, apart from the overall dreariness)

Probably still a bit early for #3 but I'm going to be away from my laptop for 24 hours or so

Still looks kinda like Indonesia to me, except for the absence of people and traffic.

Hard to tell, but the writing on the white building looks like it might be Arabic. And yet the grey skies, puddles of water and green grass of the second picture hardly screams Middle East. And the writing in the first pic looks like it's Chinese. Colour me confused.

Zelda Zonk, Friday, 13 August 2021 00:18 (two years ago) link

The white pointed arches look pretty distinctive - Islamic influence?

Zelda Zonk, Friday, 13 August 2021 00:26 (two years ago) link

it's one of the 800 gigantic cities in indonesia i think, a lot of muslim / arabic crossover in that part of the world.

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Friday, 13 August 2021 00:27 (two years ago) link

And plenty of Chinatowns in Indonesia too I'm guessing

Zelda Zonk, Friday, 13 August 2021 00:28 (two years ago) link

xp
Isn't Indonesia largely Muslim? They would likely have buildings with Arabic writing.

nickn, Friday, 13 August 2021 00:29 (two years ago) link

it could be brunei for instance. it's definitely somewhere wet.

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Friday, 13 August 2021 00:30 (two years ago) link

The white building looks like it could be a mosque, and the first picture posted could be a Buddhist temple. Both would be common in Indonesian or Malaysian cities.

Is that one of those Japanese mini Kei trucks? So we have Chinese lampions, Arabic type windows, palm trees, and now a harbour that looks like it recently flooded - it's going to be some island in the middle of everything, isn't it? Like... Okinawa?

StanM, Saturday, 14 August 2021 08:58 (two years ago) link

I am surprised at how tricky this one has turned out to be, thought picture #4 would be it. Tempted to give a clue at this stage, or at least list a few countries it isn't.

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 14 August 2021 11:51 (two years ago) link

No to clues, and no to non-image information I think. I think a #5 would be better.

thought picture #4 would be it.

Personally I thought I'd get more from 1 and 2 than from 4, not that I got much of anything though

Two Harbors, Minnesota

Bo Burzum (Boring, Maryland), Saturday, 14 August 2021 14:06 (two years ago) link

It is not Two Harbors, Minnesota

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Saturday, 14 August 2021 16:17 (two years ago) link

what are we supposed to see in #4 that would give it away?

StanM, Saturday, 14 August 2021 20:55 (two years ago) link

Combination of port and factory should be pretty distinctive. or so I thought.

Anyway, #5 as requested

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Saturday, 14 August 2021 23:08 (two years ago) link

it's 1 am here, sorry :-)

StanM, Saturday, 14 August 2021 23:22 (two years ago) link

OK, that's not what I was expecting. I no longer think its Indonesia or Malaysia. Looks too dry.

o. nate, Sunday, 15 August 2021 02:25 (two years ago) link

#1 clearly looks Chinese (Chinese characters in red above gate, lion statues) and some people thought that was misdirection and it was a Chinatown but that city is really big and now I'm back to thinking it's a port city in China -- the problem is, places in China with Islamic influence aren't really on the seacoast right?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 15 August 2021 02:39 (two years ago) link

Ok, this shot looks more promising!

cherry blossom, Sunday, 15 August 2021 02:49 (two years ago) link

I agree we're no longer looking at Malaysia or Indonesia, but I don't think this is China. This feels more like Africa

cherry blossom, Sunday, 15 August 2021 02:52 (two years ago) link

Yay! well done!

StanM, Sunday, 15 August 2021 03:13 (two years ago) link

well done cherry blossom!

I started looking at Port Louis via this list - https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinatowns_in_Africa
