Marseille

《Myst1kOblivi0n》 (jim in vancouver), Friday, 3 September 2021 20:11 (two years ago) link

is it though

StanM, Saturday, 4 September 2021 04:38 (two years ago) link

Doorway doesn't look French to me, although mountain in the background looks similar to the one outside Marseille. Old man with stick is a real generic Mediterranean old geezer, could be French, Spanish, southern Italian... the other people look like tourists, and Marseille isn't really a tourist town

Zelda Zonk, Saturday, 4 September 2021 08:53 (two years ago) link

What ARE those square button type things on the wall? Are they painted on? Either way: why?

StanM, Saturday, 4 September 2021 16:59 (two years ago) link

(... former wall cemetery and those were name plaques? They're too far apart for that) (nevermind, just thinking out loud and having no idea)

Looks quite a bit like Santa Cruz de Tenerife but I can't find any exact matches with that peak although one is very similar

ignore the blue line (or something), Sunday, 5 September 2021 23:26 (two years ago) link

Very distinctive decorative touches to the street lights, although I wouldn't know how to search for that. The wall is intriguing, looks like there are modern buildings directly behind it so it's not like it's encircling a cemetery or castle or whatever. And it doesn't quite look like a city wall either.

Zelda Zonk, Monday, 6 September 2021 00:20 (two years ago) link

Very distinctive street light poles. Also weird to see electrical wires strung light pole to light pole on left side of the picture.

that's not my post, Monday, 6 September 2021 02:05 (two years ago) link

This should be gettable but I'm not getting it. Best I can come up with is that it feels Mediterranean, but doesn't feel French, my gut feeling is somewhere Spanish

Zelda Zonk, Monday, 6 September 2021 03:09 (two years ago) link

The black car and the reddish one driving away from the camera are both French (Peugeot 307 and Renault Teepee, around mid-2000s), but of course these cars are popular eveywhere in Europe. The car driving towards the camera is a VW Polo (2010ish), which isn't any help at all.

Those streetlights look suspiciously British, could it be Gibraltar?

Neil S, Monday, 6 September 2021 16:01 (two years ago) link

I don't think I can find an angle of the rock of Gibraltar that looks like that - guessing no to that one. Santa Cruz (Tenerife) looked better but couldn't find a ridge shaped quite like these pics either.

StanM, Monday, 6 September 2021 17:52 (two years ago) link

I was wondering about Melilla or Ceuta, but again can't find an exact counterpart for the mountainous background

Zelda Zonk, Monday, 6 September 2021 21:50 (two years ago) link

With French cars could it be Algeria?

nickn, Monday, 6 September 2021 22:33 (two years ago) link

I have no idea really but that sky is certainly (west?) African in its depth and intensity.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Thursday, 9 September 2021 13:27 (two years ago) link

It isn't Oran or Constantine, the streetlights are different.

Kind regards, Anus (the table is the table), Thursday, 9 September 2021 15:51 (two years ago) link

These car plates look European to me

Dinsdale, Thursday, 9 September 2021 20:03 (two years ago) link

The huge mountain at the end of a flat urban road is quite distinctive, I looked at a few places in Italy near mountains but they all had extensive foothills where the roads petered out into farm tracks & vineyards.

ledge, Thursday, 9 September 2021 20:08 (two years ago) link

I feel like if I could just read what's on the green billboard in the last picture everything would be revealed

Dinsdale, Thursday, 9 September 2021 20:20 (two years ago) link

Just as I suspected, cherry blossom has done that thing were guessing the city on the guess the city thread isn't enough

But I was right three days ago and have finally found the spot in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

17 Puente Galcerán

ignore the blue line (or something), Thursday, 9 September 2021 20:57 (two years ago) link

I was going to mention that the big palm on the left is a Canary Island date palm, but those are commonly grown elsewhere too (I have one in my back yard).

nickn, Thursday, 9 September 2021 21:24 (two years ago) link

nice one! I gave up too soon with Santa Cruz.

StanM, Thursday, 9 September 2021 21:27 (two years ago) link

Santa Cruz!

The original streetviews are just to the South of this one, same road

cherry blossom, Friday, 10 September 2021 02:50 (two years ago) link

thread title is "Guess the City", not "provide coordinates of this photograph" or "give complete supporting evidence for identifying the city" ...

assert (matttkkkk), Friday, 10 September 2021 03:06 (two years ago) link

it's more fun this way imho

StanM, Friday, 10 September 2021 05:44 (two years ago) link

This way does sort of reduce it to either knowing it at first glance or leaving it to those with the time/tenacity to trawl through Google Maps. Still a great thread, either way.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Friday, 10 September 2021 07:33 (two years ago) link

Yeah finding the actual spot is where the fun is

a (waterface), Friday, 10 September 2021 12:21 (two years ago) link

It's cherry blossom's thread so i'm fine to play by their rules but we should probably establish that just guessing the city doesn't cut it anymore or we get incidents where people assume a city has been ruled out because it was guessed and unacknowledged

ignore the blue line (or something), Friday, 10 September 2021 13:06 (two years ago) link

Still puzzled by the purpose of that wall

Zelda Zonk, Friday, 10 September 2021 13:46 (two years ago) link

I kind of like having the guess be supported by some kind of visual evidence. Makes it more challenging that way and also makes sure the thread doesn't devolve into people just throwing out names of a bunch of random cities (not that this has happened).

StanM, Monday, 13 September 2021 09:02 (two years ago) link

doesn't ring a bell & that RP logo isn't easily found on google either (or I'm doing it wrong)

StanM, Monday, 13 September 2021 09:51 (two years ago) link

can't find it either on google or yandex.

sign probably saying 'SALE' in the window suggests an english speaking country.

I think it might be a Uniqlo now.

Tim, Monday, 13 September 2021 11:21 (two years ago) link

damn, just found it myself!

ledge, Monday, 13 September 2021 11:24 (two years ago) link

sign probably saying 'SALE' in the window suggests an english speaking country.

The anglicism 'Sale' replaced the German words 'Sommerschlussverkauf' and 'Winterschlussverkauf' a while ago, much to the relief of German sign-writers.

I recognised the store logo, but was beaten to the punch on Düsseldorf.

The premises in Schadowstraße is now an opticians, I think: https://ergra-low-vision.de/
