Looks more like Kiev tbh, the island in the middle matches up with maps in a certain way.

I was looking at Kiev too but it it has more topography.

I could be totally wrong since I don't see any onion domes.

Can't find the aerial shot but I really want to go to northern China now. It's Harbin

great find - I had been looking at big cities on rivers near the sea in the South but had given up

StanM, Friday, 17 September 2021 09:24 (two years ago) link

I was switching between the south and the north and the Russia comments above made me refocus on the north

Well done. Was hoping to get some idea of what all those russian style buildings are, they're not identified in google maps itself but I found a user review: Located in the Sun Island Scenic Area, Russian-style Town is a Russian-themed tourist spot and sightseeing area. The town retains a few dozen Russian-style villas and private residences. You can walk into these buildings for a visit.

The space age building on the far left, however, is completely unmarked.

The space age building is Harbin Grand Theatre

scroll left for a headless person with another tiny person in their rucksack.

ledge, Friday, 17 September 2021 09:41 (two years ago) link

Wow I was sure that it wasn't China.

I wouldn't be so keen on moving to Harbin, it gets real cold there in the winter.

Smashed it!

The aerial photo is super close to the icy river one you found, a bit to the NW next to Harbin Polarland

cherry blossom, Friday, 17 September 2021 09:41 (two years ago) link

And yeah it does share strange similarities with the Dnipro aerial shot from the other time!

cherry blossom, Friday, 17 September 2021 13:17 (two years ago) link

Interesting.. so the architecture was done deliberately to evoke a Russian appearance. Nice find.

o. nate, Friday, 17 September 2021 13:42 (two years ago) link

Missed this one but, yep, Harbin was mostly built by Russian railway workers and, though it has obviously changed a lot, the historical buildings (and faux historical ones) often have a heavy Russian influence.

Building on the left, behind the traffic light sign, does not look English at all

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

Porking level G4 (Boring, Maryland), Monday, 20 September 2021 22:33 (two years ago) link

I'm still trying to figure out what that grassy area in the center is. At first it looked like some kind of traffic circle, but then I started to think that the apparent curvature of the wall was actually fish-eye lens distortion and the wall is actually fairly straight. Still not sure though. And I can't figure out what is the in the low-lying area behind those bushes. Perhaps a river or train tracks?

o. nate, Tuesday, 21 September 2021 01:20 (two years ago) link

Maybe non-English looking building on left in an otherwise English looking scene suggests more continental influence ?some place in Kent maybe

that's not my post, Tuesday, 21 September 2021 02:53 (two years ago) link

o.nate, yeah was thinking that too could even be another road down there

Sorry, but that is how I feel (Ste), Tuesday, 21 September 2021 07:23 (two years ago) link

My guess is pedestrian underpass.

ledge, Tuesday, 21 September 2021 07:50 (two years ago) link

Yeah, I'd say it's a pedestrian underpass that goes through the roundabout.

Like caek, I don't think it's northern.

brain (krakow), Tuesday, 21 September 2021 09:03 (two years ago) link

Another vote for pedestrian underpass, I'm sure of it. And that's a roundabout, fish-eye or no fish-eye. The building on the left could easily be a hotel, don't think it looks that un-English if so

Is this defo a city? Getting distinct town vibes

ignore the blue line (or something), Tuesday, 21 September 2021 09:29 (two years ago) link

I don't see a Salvation Army band playing nor children drinking lemonade, so yeah, northern town is out.

After dropping down onto a bunch of hunches I realised there maybe aren't as many roundabouts with pedestrian underpasses as I'd thought, so googled "traffic roundabouts with pedestrian underpasses" which quickly led me to a news story about renovation of St Bot's roundabout in Colchester

The strange building on the right is, rather inevitably, an NCP car park
