He can’t post up and he’s defensively versatile. Why in the world do people think that’s a center.
― Matt Armstrong, Wednesday, September 22, 2021 5:21 PM (one hour ago) bookmarkflaglink
hes tall cant shoot and can play defense, and im sure youve noticed posting up isnt quite as central to the nba as it once was

draymond made everyone think anyone can be draymond
― a talented ‘Rebel’ with Balls (Spottie), Wednesday, September 22, 2021 5:24 PM (one hour ago) bookmarkflaglink
its just the best comp for his skills, and of course he is physically much more of a center than dray

yeah i mean you can shoot and play center but you cant not shoot and play shooting guard

like aside from picking a semantic argument do you actually have anything to say about basketball here or should we just wrap this one up

i didnt say they were exactly the same guy
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 September 2021 22:56 (two years ago) link
i mean you could play simmons at power forward but youd need to pair him with a center who can shoot, which would mean on offense he is essentially... playing center, which tbh might be the best arrangement but is trickier to pull off from a personnel standpoint, you could also just play him at center i think it would be fine and actually good, having an elite ballhandler/passer at center is a pretty sick advantage
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 September 2021 22:57 (two years ago) link
right i just disagree that ben is physically much more of a center than dray.
id be interested in seeing if ben can play small ball five for 15 minutes a game, to see how he holds up

marcus has to his credit turned himself into a passable shooter, but earlier in his career his bad shooting was a huge problem, he was coming off the bench despite being an all world defender and generally good player
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 September 2021 23:00 (two years ago) link
could ben really guard, say, jokic for most of a playoff series, I guess I don’t know how he handles truly huge dudes
― Clay, Wednesday, 22 September 2021 23:01 (two years ago) link
there are a lot of nba centers who have a hard time with jokic and embiid doesnt mean theyre not centers

that is true and fair xp

hes not very effective at any of those things tho, i think you need to use him as a roll man in the halfcourt a bunch
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 September 2021 23:08 (two years ago) link
he quite famously hates dunking so much that it’s why we’re all in this pickle
― Clay, Wednesday, 22 September 2021 23:09 (two years ago) link
i mean, embiid can shoot. he's not KAT or jokic from out there but he at least has to be guarded to some degree at the three point line. i feel like there is clarity on the issue of simmons + a second big bcuz he has spent 4 years playing w/ arguably the single best center in the entire league. so who is the big that you are pairing w/ him that is going to work out better than playing him w/ the guy who is possibly the peak of the position? like, he's not ending up on the nuggets. so who else is out there?

The Sixers did play him at center for certain stretches last year when Embiid was out.

One of those games was the game when Simmons scored 42 against Utah.
oh yah that was cool
― a talented ‘Rebel’ with Balls (Spottie), Wednesday, 22 September 2021 23:12 (two years ago) link
yeah that coach nick video about him i posted upthread has a bunch from that game
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 September 2021 23:12 (two years ago) link
just interested to see how it would work in a bigger sample. how he would hold up in the playoffs
the thing simmons is elite at on offense is pushing the ball on the fast break and getting to the rim. he's basically lebron from a size and athleticism perspective when he has a head of steam on the fast break and a clear lane ahead of him. he's basically unguardable in that scenario. his FT shooting is abysmal which is the fly in the ointment but still he's in the top top percentile in the NBA in that scenario imo. so the other issue w/ playing him w/ a center is that it incentivizes you to play slow and in the halfcourt, which is counter to his skills as demonstrated so far in his career
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 22 September 2021 23:13 (two years ago) link
he needs to play w/ lamelo ball
the thing about simmons being an elite fastbreaker is that skill is even more valuable... at the center position
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 September 2021 23:14 (two years ago) link

dont understand why this would be the case
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 September 2021 23:15 (two years ago) link
simmons is a career 60% ft shooter fwiw its not great but its not hacka territory either
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 September 2021 23:17 (two years ago) link
playing him *with* a center not playing him *at* center
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 22 September 2021 23:18 (two years ago) link
if you just took ayton off the suns and put simmons in there i think you could make the argument that phoenix would be better. if you put real 3 and D and ballhandling/shooting talent around simmons and basically never put a guy who is taller than him on the floor w/ him, then i think you might have something. the sixers have basically had no guard talent the last several years and their best player is bigger than simmons. it's like the opposite of what he needs
if it weren't for simmons ILH would have nothing to argue about until October

one thing that would be cool if he went to portland is they could do the halfcourt fastbreak play that steph and dray run, one of the most devastating recent nba innovations, that almost no one else can do cause they dont have the skills

i think dray and simmons have similar skills and flaws, which doesnt make them the same player, but simmons should try to emulate dray i think that would be good for him

maybe even try to play with a lil passion why not

Fun random fact: In his first four seasons, Draymond attempted 280 threes. Simmons has attempted 34 in his first four.

simmons absolutely will not shoot and i think thats fine maybe even good
― lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 September 2021 23:54 (two years ago) link
because when he shoots it does not go in
ive come to realize shooting with the wrong hand is actually hard and not good
― a talented ‘Rebel’ with Balls (Spottie), Wednesday, 22 September 2021 23:56 (two years ago) link
It just seems like the Sixers have been telling him not to shoot since day one, and it has resulted in him not developing as a shooter.
Draymond at least can give you some midrange and *might* make a three if the ball comes around to him at the end of the clock.
― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Wednesday, 22 September 2021 23:56 (two years ago) link
draymond is actually the opposite of simmons. raises his level of play when it matters the most
