I vote yes - CTH drew me into this extended universe, and I’m still a regular listener, but there are so many people out there actually thinking constructively and inclusively, without the class reductionism or the sneering cynicism and disdain for those who can’t afford ideological purity. Theirs is not a large tent and that’s fine, but it is probably not an ideal and definitely not a welcoming gateway for most people.

‘Ideological purity’ is such a weird criticism to levy in 2021. I mean, we have it, and it’s absolutely bipartisan, but it only encompasses a few things: defense budgets, more money and weapons for Israel and Saudi Arabia, and that cops are actually good and just need moar Training and moar money for tanks. That’s it. That’s the “purity”. Question those and you will feel the ire of both parties and the mainstream media.

Honestly I feel like ‘class reductionism’ is handled in a similar manner. The *ONLY* talk about class in America, from either side of the aisle, is about the “middle class”, which tbh is some real horseshit concocted to keep folks scraping by on $65k thinking that their solidarity really ought to be with the Jeff Bezos and Elon Musks. The notion of a “working class” is essentially (and often erroneously) employed as a shorthand for white union guys in the Midwest who voted for Trump—when the reality in 2031 is it’s more likely to be a woman of color, raising children alone and working more than one job, probably in the gig economy.

…a gig economy where consultants making $650k a year (incl former Obama golden boys) are going to make damn sure are never able to organize or see any kind of job-based benefits.

So yeah, we have ‘ideological purity’ and ‘class reductionism’, just not in the way that people typically mean.

Jesus Christ I didn’t actually mean that term literally, I almost didn’t write it because I knew it was the wrong words but I was grasping and I couldn’t think of anything that captured what I was trying to get at in the moment. It was more about judging the compromises a lot of people have to make, choices these dudes don’t have to make because of their privilege.

But others have been through this hand wringing here before and I’m not here to do that, nor to criticize (or for that matter defend) CTH. It’s been done. I was just trying to just flesh out my support for Will’s suggestion that maybe we should be drawing more attention to other lefty podcasts - which in practice has already been happening here for a long while but another thread with a new name would make it more visible

No offense taken. And of course I share your frustration with the disappearance of class politics from mainstream discourse and the disintegration of class consciousness in this country. I was trying to summarize what probably puts a lot of people off of Chapo, mostly. I resorted to outdated/inaccurate terms to do so because I had a class to teach and I wanted to hit "submit post" and make my point. Also, linguistic precision is fucking hard, and my brain is fucking slow.

I've never seen anyone who owns up to being a Jimmy Dore viewer. He gets a lot of views so they're definitely out there but they don't seem to crow about it. (or it's all hate views now)

but back on the Chapo tip, just finished up Hell of Presidents and throughly enjoyed it. Pretty masterfully done IMO. Highly recommend, even if you don’t want to commit to the whole saga. You could probably hop in on the FDR ep or even JFK and get a lot out of it.
