Yeah, Chalke is looking way too Barbie doll there for me. Sara and Lecy still look like actual people.

marmotwolof, Saturday, 11 August 2007 18:33 (sixteen years ago) link

Sara and Lecy still look like actual people.

well, yes, they're both nice, but the difference to me is that sara had a professional photo taken whereas lecy went to Olan Mills and decided on the "mountain" backdrop.

kenan, Saturday, 11 August 2007 18:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Wow, Becky II has had an actual career (of sorts). I had no idea.

milo z, Saturday, 11 August 2007 18:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Becky II is on Scrubs. She was in a movie called Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy and a bunch of other shit nobody heard of. Becky I was in like a Law and Order episode, a Sex and the City episode, Boys Don't Cry, How to Make an American Quilt and then a couple movies nobody heard of with bad promo pics.

Booker ruled. This thread needs more Jackie talk, too.
Does anyone remember the episode where Jackie was hella drunk and she stumbled and said, "Man, there's ALL KINDS of gravity in here!" That's my favorite Jackie line ever.

marmotwolof, Saturday, 11 August 2007 21:17 (sixteen years ago) link

def like 2nd seson right? Jackie ruled, big time. I always wanted to have a Jackie in my life.

Surmounter, Saturday, 11 August 2007 22:32 (sixteen years ago) link

was that when darlene was over jackie's while she was poundin down beers? funny little plot line

Surmounter, Saturday, 11 August 2007 22:37 (sixteen years ago) link

It was early on, yeah. I seem to remember it was an episode where pre-depression jock Darlene had run away to Jackie's apartment or something and was hanging out there when Jackie got wasted and said that. Last time I saw Laurie Metcalf she was on either Desperate Housewives or Grey's Anatomy, one of those shows. IMDb says she has been on both, so I can't be sure which.

x-post that would be the right episode, then.

marmotwolof, Saturday, 11 August 2007 22:42 (sixteen years ago) link

yea and then roseanne sticks it to jackie later. u were gettin bombed in front of my kid??!

Heave Ho, Sunday, 12 August 2007 00:26 (sixteen years ago) link

i love her but that thing she said about gayz pissed me off, something about how all gay ppl ever talk about is their gay politics, and at the end of it isn't being gay about narcissism anyway?

Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 14:55 (sixteen years ago) link

It wasn't properly worded and way too generalized, but I think I got what she was saying and didn't completely disagree ... at least in terms of some gay politicos.

Eric H., Sunday, 12 August 2007 15:12 (sixteen years ago) link

fine but when you issue a statement to the public, you have a lot of responsibility TO properly word it, and to NOT generalize. shunting that responsibility is tactless and shortsighted.

Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 15:20 (sixteen years ago) link

Was it something she "issued to the public" or was it something she said in an interview that perhaps the reporter didn't clarify or took out of context or...?

Casuistry, Sunday, 12 August 2007 15:26 (sixteen years ago) link

It was on her blog, I think.

Eric H., Sunday, 12 August 2007 15:57 (sixteen years ago) link

mhmm

Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:09 (sixteen years ago) link

stupid source but here's the scoop. i guess it was on radio or something. stupid comments.

Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:12 (sixteen years ago) link

i mean notwithstanding ppl's FEELINGS it was just a dumb political move, why would you say something like that and jeopordize ur reputation?

Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Roseanne more or less OTM, though -- not about the narcissism but about how 99% of politically active queers are doing queer activism only. Clearly you can find counterexamples, but when I worked for an enviro group there was a shocking lack of gays and lesbians in the movement.

Casuistry, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:20 (sixteen years ago) link

ya, OK. still, she coulda chosen to sound a bit more intelligent about it.

Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:21 (sixteen years ago) link

Seriously, Surmounter? Why say something you think is true when it might jeopardize your reputation? Are you sure you want to be advocating that?

Casuistry, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:22 (sixteen years ago) link

um, well in any circumstances, u have to consider the politics. it's unavaoidable. so to a certain extent, yes i think that if you're about to say something that sounds quite tactless and offensive, it would be pretty dumb of you to not stop and think, "do i want my reputation to be dumb and tactless?"

Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:23 (sixteen years ago) link

everybody thinks about image/where u stand socially. it's not low it's just necessary.

Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:25 (sixteen years ago) link

i mean it jus sucks for her, cuz now this woman that i thought was like some versin of God is slightly tainted in my eyes. u don't go around saying being gay is about being obsessed with yourself. please

Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Roseanne built her entire career on being tactless, though. On being provocative and -- not dumb, but certainly not "intellectual". On cutting through certain situations and issues like a loud fart in a boardroom.

Casuistry, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:28 (sixteen years ago) link

absolutely, but she was also usually sensitive to different types of ppl, at least with regard to her acting.

i think maybe this "fart" would have been different had she chosen her words better. i never thought of her as insensitive to different kinds of ppl. and to imply that a gay man's existence can be chalked up to getting off on himself is cleaerly insensitive.

i love her brand of nonintellectual clarity, but here it seemed like she was just ready to fart just to fart.

thanks i've now typed font at least three times.

Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:31 (sixteen years ago) link

lol *fart

Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:31 (sixteen years ago) link

to imply that a gay man's existence can be chalked up to getting off on himself is cleaerly insensitive.

Except of course that's not what she said at all. She said that some people say this and that in the context of political activism those people might have a point.

Casuistry, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:33 (sixteen years ago) link

she may not have said that EXACTLY, but i wouldn't agree with "thats not what she said at all."

"some ppl say being gay is about narcissism and sometimes i wonder"

is way too vague/insensitive/silly to be considered a "nonintellectual take on grappling the issues"

she may not have said that gays and lesbians are looking at themselves in the mirror wanking off, but she also left a lot of room for reading into it. which is why she was attacked for it after the fact.

Surmounter, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:35 (sixteen years ago) link

"Sometimes I wonder" in this sentence seems pretty clearly to mean "when I think about politically activist gay people, I wonder".

Casuistry, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:36 (sixteen years ago) link

She was attacked for it after the fact at least in part because it was a good way for gay political groups to get their soundbites into the media.

Casuistry, Sunday, 12 August 2007 16:38 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm not really sure why we're arguing, i don't think we disagree much.

her words were lackluster, her message perhaps valid if explored through better means.
